Why am i not able to deny

Q : Yesterday, i matched using Lina against Dire at pass.difficulty without filling it with bots. I won the game. Though, i was playing like moron. But, i couldn'T deny any creeps or didn't notice.
I know what deny means. The problem is the game has to say "deny" when i do it. Since i didn't hear such thing, there should be a mistake somewhere.
Attacking- Attack button + left click the enemy(creeps or hero) or right click the enemy
Attack button + right click on the map to the nearest of any enemy results in
attacking the closest enemy.
Attacking with spells/abilities - Specific attack button + left click on the enemy
So how about, denying?
A : Press "A" + left click on the creep to attack ur creep. U can deny only when ur creep is below 50% health, and a "!" will appear.
