Some dota theory

I was initially going to post this in this thread but it got way too long and way too off topic for that. A lot of this goes against a lot of things people believe about dota so i expect people to question my intelligence and/or get mad. If you do, you should tell me about it in the comments.

Because this is originally intended more as a reply than a blog post the pacing is kind of off. Sorry about that.

----

a lot of the newer or buffed heroes are very powerful at very early levels and a lot of people have trouble dealing with that. still, that's not really different from how gankers screw carries and pushers screw gankers before they can get the items and levels they need. there has rarely been any real need to not take a team of 5 intelligence heroes. all the gankers and pushers are always high tier while you need more reasoning to draft carry, utility or initiator heroes.

regardless of this they get picked. you could toss in another nukestunner instead of that initiator or carry and play a game of nothing but nukes and stuns. the idea is that a carry gets strong later but against heroes whose utility is "being able to disable and kill shit" it doesn't really work (and a lot of them have hidden steroids or potentially ridiculous combos like refreshers or totem crit). whatever people tell you, don't believe it. the ganker team can easily beat the spectre team at 60 minutes if they have a gold advantage.

an argument could be made here that while a ganker team may still do slightly better in late game assuming perfect play there's a "easy vs. good" situation where the harder snowballing that carries do makes it much easier for them to punish any mistakes. the stronger presence that gankers have earlier will usually make the team with less of them be slightly behind at mid-game which more or less makes up for that.

also none of this is taking into account anti-carries which are basically carries that are useless against gankers but entirely fuck up other carries. troll can easily go against void in late game without any disadvantage, for example.

so why do people pick heroes that aren't in the top 20? they're not better and the team composition is only a matter of practicality - there is no counter to being killed. what they are is different, not better. a carry can snowball much harder and usually has more potential in fights (though there is also more risk). as long as you make sure to have the rest of your guys in position to keep them covered when they are weak they are not necessarily any worse, either.

what needs to be done with the "bullshit at levels 1-4" heroes class is the same thing that's done with gankers and pushers. accept that just as carries without gankers get ganked and gankers without pushers get pushed, teams without those heroes are going to be out of the game in under five minutes.

TL;DR carry = ganker < pusher < newhero, but the only way to make use of that advantage is when the other team has an almost complete lack of that class and it goes away pretty soon if you can't. maybe one way to say this would be that unless the opposing captain is an idiot, picks in dota are entirely about preference.
