Default Val's Pretty Guide to Every Hero

The Alt-Tab Guide to Every Hero

This guide is now split by primary hero attribute because of a Playdota limit on the number of images per guide. You can find the individual parts at:

  • Click on the tavern icons to find your hero.
  • Brackets [ ] mean the item(s) is(are) optional.
  • Use common sense:
    • For supports and item-independent heroes, the Extension: list is more for giving interesting possibilities than an actual build order.
    • These builds are an attempt to describe builds that will work for a variety of skill levels. As a result, they are often optimal for none.
    • All builds should be adapted to each game.

This Guide has only been made possible through the helpful contributions of many people. You can find a detailed list here

If all the heroes are going to take up as much space as Abaddon, this is gonna be a very large guide. Still; this is starting to look good, nice concept, just need to format better and it'll be set.

I wish you the best when Icefrog releases 6.65 and all the heroes have been drastically changed.

Also, I hope you spoiler these, if you don't its going to take forever to load the page.

Val's Pretty Alt+Tab Guide to Every Hero

How to use: Press Ctrl+F and type in the hero you're looking for - success! Alternatively, simply click on the hero you wish to see and you will be automaticly linked to him/her.

Note: These builds are an attempt to describe builds that will work for a variety of skill levels. As a result, they are often optimal for none. Any build should always be adapted to a particular game. Good luck; have fun!

@Val

I had more of something like this in mind. I can do the formatting/linking and such. You could do the Skill/Itembuilds. Thoughts?

names > icons to be honest....

I favor the plain text guide for its clear vieuw to be honest....

@ the other guy

iirc the codes on PD don't allow hotlinking in that kind of way or has this been fixed in the meantime ?

You can link the image to the hero name I believe. Will double check.

Lol Like I am ever going to read that.

Much rather read a high rated guide for my one specific hero.

@ToG: I wouldn't mind if you did the linking for it. It should work fine, but would be a pain. I suppose guide should be spoilered so this loads before the heat-death of the universe.

@Lycan: I really like the plaintext too . That being said, making it easier to read for everyone is not a bad thing at all. I think the items are easier to understand this way than in text form. I do agree that the skills are a total mess.

@Morbius: Thanks for the good wishes. I get lots of people in the strat forums to help me update my guide so it's usually done about 6 weeks after a new versoin comes out (I wait a couple before starting).

@Audacious: My Alt+Tab guide and in-depth guides serve completely different purposes.

@All: Once I've settled on the formatting I'll see if I can get strat-forum minions friends to help me process the 90-some heroes.

I assume somewhere in the future, this guide will be Abaddon-like format wise?

by the time you get this all pictured up, some things might change as far as skill builds and whatnot. although if they all look as good as loa this should be pretty badass.

What about some brief explanation in a spoiler box explaining why/when to use the skill/item build.
And a brief gameplay/role/playstyle will be great too.

I thought about making a guide like this, too, but i was unsure about heroes i nearly never play. I've looked for my fav heroes here and wondered didn't saw anything wrong (tb, sylla, chen). very good work so far, better than i could i think :)

If you want in-depth info, justifications, reasoning and gameplay tips, you want a real guide, not this one. This guide is meant for people who know how to play and just need an item/skill build.

Stuff like "Waning Rift for more aggressive play and Illusory Orb if you facing hard lane."

or

Playstyle

Gank 24/7.

The strength of this guide is it's conciseness: Every description is short and simple, so you can reference the guide even in a game. Adding more info will ruin the "short and sweet" concept while the guide still can't compete with detailed single-hero guides in terms of in-depth info.

Hey all. Just typed up a somewhat different format for the LoA pretty version. Take a look. It keeps the items as pics, but puts the skills in a table. We could keep to the same colors for consistency. Yellow for Stats, Red for Ult, 3 colors (I used YellowGreen, RoyalBlue and SandyBrown) for the other skills. Look at it in the guide version instead of the forum version for best results: Val's Pretty Guide to Every Hero - DotA Guides

Thoughts? I like the new one better.

I like the new one myself, easier on the eyes, and newbies (who the guide is intended for) won't know what the skill icons represent.

If you could, try to make it so the item names show up when you mouse over the icons (Dont think you can do that here, but its a thought)

In my opinion, newbie should know how to play a hero. Use one line sentence to describe what role the hero has.

The idea looks great, so I though I can contribute.
Here's the mini-guide from my Yurnero guide.

NOTE: It's been edited to fit into a NQB+Spoiler, so it's quite narrow.

Code:
[B]Gameplay[/B]
Always dual-lane with a slower/disabler.
Gank when possible.
Take down lone heroes.
Refill your Bottle whenever possible.
Farm with your Blade Fury whenever possible.
Always have a TP.
Only max out Blade Fury when you can no longer kill a creep wave with it.

Th guide isn't meant for total newbies, simple as that. There are plenty of beginner guides out there, why should this one try to cater to that demographic.

Edit: I like the new format better.

Maybe just something like this:

Leviathan the Tidehunter
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gush, Stats, Gush, Kraken, Gush, Ravage, Gush, Stats, Stats, Stats, Ravage, Anchor, Anchor, Anchor, Anchor, Kraken, Ult, Kraken, Kraken, Kraken ...
Start: Flask, 2xTango, 3xClarity, 3xGG
Caster Core: Wand, Boots> 2xNull> Phase> Blink
Caster Extension: Shiva's> Refresher
(DPS Core: Boots> Armlet, Phase>Blink)
(DPS Extension: HotD, HoT> Cuirass> Satanic)
Tyvm for your help, but I'd like these to line up exactly with the builds I have in my plaintext guide, so I can't use your version. It looks nice though.
@All: I'm about to open up a thread in the strat forums looking for people to help me out with the prettifying. If you'd like to help, that would be the place.
IMO for the skill build you should only use icons as a guide (I'm assuming you have only one per hero)..
Using the table requires too much work for practically the same space and icons look cool..
Hahaha. The icons look cooler, but are substantially harder to interpret, especially when heroes have similar-looking icons (*cough*razor*cough*). Also, the table's only really difficult the first time. Afterward, it's a pretty easily doable modification job.
But similar looking icons are irrelevant when you're mentioning the specific hero..
Anyway will try to help out (I haven't tried using tables yet so it may take time.)
You misunderstand me, I mean that all of razor's skills look similar at a glance. If you're in a game and alt+tab out really quick, your brain's going to take some time to process the sea of blue electric-looking icons into useful information.
If you need help with modifying the tables, let me know. But really you should just be changing the colors and skills in the table I made (quote to see the bbcode and copy-paste).
Tyvm for help!
I think the skill build is not right
look at this:
Razor the Lightning Revenant
Ult../Plasma../Unstable/Link../Unstable..
Start: 2xTango, Flask, 3xClarity, 3xGG
Chaser Core: Boots, Wand> Hood, Diffusal
Ult whenever possible
Plasma whenever possible
Unstable at level 2
Where is Scepter on Panda?
Quote:
Piemonger a while back did a guide like this I believe, and one of the nice things he did was with each hero link a good guide. It doesn't have to follow it perfectly, but the gameplay coverage plus variety in item builds allows a player to be more successful. You might have heard this already (maybe that linking thing?) but w/e.
Some of the builds are a bit off, but are ok enough for anyone alt-tabbing in pub or anything.
Excellent feedback. Give it a though.
Piemonger's guide was great. I wish it still existed. I don't really generate my guides from existing ones though, so I don't have a nice list to link to at hand. Maybe next time I run a 3builds I can do that? Dunno. I guess I could also find a list here, but it's quite a lot of work. We'll see - I agree that it's useful, but keeping tabs on 90-somewhat other guides is a huge amount of upkeep.
@B4: Fixed razor. Thanks for being super-watchful. You can skill malefice 3 at level 5, yes. ceiling(5/2)=3
On Upgrade-able items, it should be clear which level it is (especially on items which not change Icons [Dagon, Diffu])
This would help beginners a lot
^Trim it down a tad iKrivetko. Simply saying he is a ganker/carry will do, we only want this to be a Alt-tab item/skill guide and keeping it as short as possible realy is key here.
GJ though.
Hm, guess you're right.
I think I'll just make short tips on the playstyle.
How about now?
Better, but Val will probably have his say anyway once he is back.
God, linking all this crap is gonna take long.
I like the idea, but I'm afraid it might be too constraining. I think I'd rather just give a brief overview in words. It does look good on jugg though. *sigh* I wish everything had a clear answer.
Inb4 Rage. I know what Justin is about closing the thread, but you have to admit that it is much easier to recieve feedback there compared to here.
