Default The Enigma

I decided to write a story about a dota hero, starting with a sort of prologue and then moving on to 'present' dota. I decided to do Enigma, because aside from the whole AM-TB and VS-PA betrayal, I think he probably has the most interesting story to write about. Also, Enigma was the first hero I ever used, so I guess thats another reason I wanted to write about him. So yeah hope you enjoy, and if you like it, I'll write more.

Creation

On a distant planet, a sorcerer struggled to contain the being that he had created. As it ravaged his home world, he realised he would not be able to stop it, and that creating it in the first place was the probably the biggest mistake of his life. He had thought himself so smart, creating a weapon that would end the war. And it had ended the war, but now, now his planet would be destroyed. And he knew that that would not be the end of it. No, once his creation destroyed this world, it would travel to the next, and devour that one as well, and so it would go, until all of creation had been destroyed by this thing, leaving behind an empty void. There had to be something he could do! And searching his mind, the sorcerer realised that there was one thing he could do. Casting that spell would mean sacrificing his planet, but he knew that it was finished no matter what happened. As quickly as he could, he began weaving the signs needed for the Darchow curse. It would not stop his creation from traveling from planet to planet, but once it landed, it would forget its purpose, and lose almost all of its power. Slowly, it would begin to remember what it truly wanted, growing in power as it did so, until finally, it would destroy the planet it was on, starting the cycle again. It would not stop his creation, but it would slow it down. And maybe someday, someday a world would be able to stop it. He released the curse, and felt his mana drain out of him, knowing that he now had no way of saving his planet. His creation realised what had happened an instant before the planet imploded, and screamed in rage, as it felt its power and memories being stripped from it. Then, the planet and the sorcerer were gone, leaving behind a small blue sphere. The sphere began to shake, then took off through the darkness of space, heading for the nearest planet.

They say as one door opens, another closes, and perhaps this is true, as at the exact instant that the sorcerer’s planet was devoured, another began to form. No one knew it yet, but this planet would in time become the battlefield for one of the universe’s longest and most bitter wars.

Growth

As planet after planet fell to the unstoppable blue sphere, another planet slowly formed, finally becoming capable of supporting life. Millions of sorcerers, chakra weavers and chi users tried to stop the being, and all failed. Life began to sprout on another planet, and, as must always happen, warfare broke out. Still the sphere traveled on. It knew that whenever it destroyed a planet it would take time for it to regain its energy, but it had all the time in the universe. Another planet was destroyed by the sphere, and its inhabitants fled, trying to take refuge on other planets. When they were refused, they conquered the planet, and left behind some of their forces in a vain attempt to slow the sphere down. So they became known as the Burning Legion, and eventually they tried to conquer another planet. This time however, they were stopped once and for all. After millenia of running, the Burning Legion was finally wiped out. But the blue sphere traveled on, devouring all in its way. Another war broke out on the planet, and though the inhabitants did not know it, hundreds of other would be drawn into this war, this battle to defend the ancients of the planet. Sensing a huge upheaval in energy, the blue orb turned to the planet. It had grown tired of its never ending cycle of destruction and rebirth.
This time, things would be different

Approach

The blue orb traveled on, steadily heading for the planet. No other planet it had ever devoured had had this much energy, and maybe, just maybe, it would be enough to break the Darchow curse.

'Wake up Mangina!' a voice yelled, waking Magina from his sleep. He looked up and saw Purist standing over him, a contemptious look on his face.

'Don't call me that!' Magina yelled, getting out of his bed. 'I'll-'

'You'll what? Stare me to death?' Purist laughed at his own joke, watching Magina blindly struggle to find his weapons. 'In case you forgot, the final graduation is today, so you better get a move on.'

The orb continued its path, ignoring planets in its haste. For the first time in over 1,000,000 years, it spared planets.

'As you all know, the Scourge has recently had a large increase in its ranks.' Furion Stormrage, leader of the Sentinel said, as he looked at the masses of trainees. 'The Sentinel has decided that we must speed up our training program in order to replace our losses and get more men on the field. But you already know that, which is why you are here today. You will fight in single combat against an illusion of one of the Scourge. You will be judged, and if we deem you ready, you will join the ranks of the Sentinel. First up, Purist!'

Magina felt Purist stand up, and confidently stride into the arena. Please, he prayed, don't let him pass.

The orb traveled on, nearing its destination. As it broke the Caldorian shield around the system, it slowed, and tried, as it always did, to shield its memories and powers from the curse.

In Northrend, the Scourge's center of power, the Lich King began to search the sky, sensing something. Created by the Burning Legion, he was one of the few who knew the truth. The Legion had not been conquering, but running. And now, now the thing that that had caused them to flee was coming. There was but one chance. Kill the orb before it became powerful enough to destroy the world. Reaching out with its mind, he called to his most loyal follower. 'Abbadon! Assemble a small force and have them ready to leave within the hour!'

The orb began to round the sun of the system, slowing down even more as he prepared for the inevitable struggle with the curse.

'And now, Magina!' Furion called.

Magina stood up. He had felt as hundreds of trainees had fought, and now, now it was his turn. Walking into the arena, he heard Purist talking to Rikimaru. The satyr nodded, then disappeared. Magina jumped into the ring, then prepared to face his enemy.

Suddenly, the entire crowd gasped, and Magina struggled to sense who he was facing. Suddenly, he realised. 'Blade?' he yelled. It had been a long time since he had faced his brother, but their was no mistaking his mana. But Furion had promised he would not have to face him in the arena, so what-

Rikimaru reappeared next to Purist, and that was when Magina knew. Rikimaru had done something to the image generator, the Manta Style. But Magina would not give Purist the satisfaction of watching him surrender. No, he would fight, and by the Tree, he would win!

The orb rounded the moon of the planet, and began its final approach.

Battle

As the orb began its final approach on the planet, it slowed to a snail's pace, using some of its power to slow its approach. It knew from experience that the faster he approached the planet, the harder the curse pressed on it.

Suddenly, the orb began to waver and lose its shape, as an immense pain pressed on its mind, stripping thoughts and memories. The orb struggled to hold onto memories, knowing that it had never succeeded before.

As one battle began in space, another began on the planet. Magina felt Blade draw his weapons, and he followed suit. This is it, he thought, the moment when I show everyone that what happened before will not happen again. With a loud cry, Magina began to run at his brother. He felt Furion shake his head in disappointment and grinned, knowing that what he was about to do was completely unexpected. His brother stood still, blades ready to intercept Magina's mad dash. Magina focused on his brother's mana, and then disappeared.

The crowd gasped, then began to point and shout as they say Magina behind his brother, beginning to swing his weapons. Instantly, Blade turned on his feet, and parried Magina's attack, before swinging both his blades at Magina's head. Magina parried the attack, then tried to kick Blades legs from underneath him. Blade merely grinned and jumped the attack, before swinging his weapons at Magina's chest. Magina jumped backwards, and stood panting, ready for Blade's next attack.

Abbadon surveyed the four soldiers he had chosen for this mission. 'You all know why you are here,' he said, before he was interrupted by his master.
'This mission is of utmost importance,' the Lich King said, speaking directly into their minds. 'If you fail today, the end of the world will come. You may jest at this, but believe me, the thing you have been sent to kill is truly the most dangerous thing in existence. You must not fail!'
Abaddon nodded, then looked at his soldiers once more. 'We have our orders!' he cried, 'Now move out!'

Magina ducked Blade's weapon, then struggled to bring his own blades up to parry the second attack aimed at his stomach. Blocking it, he twisted his wrist, trapping Blades weapon on the floor. He quickly went on the attack, aiming for Blade's head. Blade jumped back, but even he wasn't fast enough to avoid the attack altogether. A thin cut appeared on his cheek. Magina grinned in satisfaction, knowing that by drawing first blood, he had gained an advantage. Blade appeared to notice the cut for the first time, his eyes widening. By the time Magina noticed Blade's fist, it was already to late to dodge, hitting him directly in the chest.

Magina was lifted off the ground, sent flying by the punch. How did Blade get so strong, he wondered, before shaking the thought from his head. Concentrate, he though, focusing on Blade's mana. Just as he managed to obtain the state he needed to teleport, his flight was cut short by arena wall, knocking him unconscious.

The orb lost its form entirely, as it lost the memory of how it looked. Taking advantage of this victory, the curse raged through the orb's mind, destroying every memory it could find.

Magina regained consciousness to find Blade advancing on him, ready to kill. He felt Furion look to Mirana and Chen, who both shook their heads in disappointment. He felt Purist grin in delight, knowing that Magina was about to lose any chance of becoming a member of the Sentinel. NO! Magina thought. There has to be something I can do! He struggled to get up, then realised that he was trapped in the wall, unable to move. But there was still something he could do. Magina struggled to reach his weapons as Blade placed his weapons at Magina's neck. Seeing this Blade grinned, before drawing the weapons back in readiness for the killing blow. Magina grabbed hold of his weapons an instant before his brother's blades began to move downwards, toward his neck. Magina began to concentrate, knowing that everything he had trained for came down to this moment. Come on, he thought. Just before Blade's weapons hit him, he focused, and disappeared.

The crowd gasped, as Magina reappeared behind Blade, swinging his own weapons at Blade's neck. Blade was unable to get out of the way in time, and his head was removed from his body. As it fell to the ground, it disappeared in puff of smoke. The effect on the crowd was instant, as it erupted into cheers.

Magina sheathed his weapons, then looked at Purist and grinned. He had won!

As one battled ended, so did another, and the orb had been no match for the curse. Unable to even think, it was slowly pulled by gravity toward the planet.

Silence

High above the planet, a writhing mass of blue liquid slowly drifted downwards, as it began to reform itself.

'You have all done extremely well!' Furion yelled, looking out at the masses of hopeful recruits. 'But, not all of you will be able to become one of us.' Pulling a scroll out of his robes, he proceeded to read it to the recruits. 'Squad 1!'

Magina watched as recruit after recruit was placed into squads. Please, he thought, let me get in. He felt Purist nudge Rikimaru and grin, and scowled in anger. He just hoped that Purist would not pass, and that he would be forced to try again next year.

Furion continued, until at last he reached the bottom of the scroll. 'Squad 15: Purist!'

Purist smiled and walked onto the stage amid cheers from the audience.

Furion continued, shaking his head at Purist's arrogance. 'Rikimaru!' The small satyr smiled and nodded to the audience, before looking back at Furion. 'And finally, Magina!'

Magina did not know what to feel. He had been accepted into the ranks of the Sentinel, but to be in the same squad as Purist was going to be...horrible. He looked back at Furion as the Prophet continued, giving instructions to the squads.

'Each squad will have two senior soldiers working with them, in order to help train them,' he said. 'Each squad will meet up in an assigned place. Squad 1: the far eastern barracks!'

Abbadon turned to his second in command, Darkterror. 'You're sure this will work?' he asked, before turning to scan the ocean.

Darkterror nodded, then grabbed onto the railing of the ship in an effort to maintain his balance. 'Yes my lord,' he answered. 'However, I will not be able to do it again for more than a month. The choice is yours; Shall I use it to get in or out?'

Abbadon grimaced, knowing that his decision would affect the outcome of the mission. Turning back to Darkterror, he voiced a question. 'Can you see if we will have to fi-?' He began, before being interrupted by Darkterror.

'Future sight is not an easy ability to control' answered Darkterror. 'If you wish me to use it, know that I will not be able to cover our approach or escape. The choice is yours.'

Abbadon snarled in anger, before giving his answer. 'Do it!'

Darkterror nodded and began to reach into his mana, placing barriers so he did not destroy himself. Taking two runes from his pouch, he placed one on each eye, then finished the casting of the spell. The effect was instant. A force began to drag on Darkterror's mind, as images began to flash before his eyes. He had a brief glimpse of himself fighting, before he began to see destruction and death. Towering over it all was a blue being, radiating evil.

Darkterror opened his eyes with a gasp, before throwing the glowing runes into the ocean. Abbadon looked at him with shock in his eyes, before voicing his question. 'What will happen?'

Darkterror tried to calm himself, before answering 'If we do not complete our mission, the entire world will fall.' Seeing Abbadon begin to open his mouth, Darkterror held up his hand. 'We will face the Morphling.'

Abbadon howled in rage, before turning to a figure who had been silent for the whole conversation. 'Do you think we have a chance?' he asked.

Kel'thuzad's ghoulish face contorted into a grin, before saying 'Yes. But you must follow my plan exactly.'

Rikimaru looked from Magina to Purist, struggling to think of a way to break the silence. They had been here for over an hour, waiting for their two superiors. Rising from his seat, Rikimaru began to leave, but stopped when he heard Magina's voice.

'Where are you going?' Magina asked.

Rikimaru grinned, then replied 'Nature calls,' before walking out of the room. Shaking his head, he headed outside, wishing that Purist would be less stubborn, and not hate Magina for what his brother had done.

Magina felt Purist's eyes drilling into him, and decided to break the silence. 'Look, we don't like each other but we're on the same squad, so can we at least try to be nice' he asked, holding out his hand.

Purist merely grunted, before swatting Magina's hand away. 'You let your brother get away,' he answered. 'No one will ever forgive you for that.'

Magina opened his mouth to reply, then turned to the door as a figure stepped in. He struggled to read the mana of the person facing him, but was unable to even sense his energy. Opening his mouth to ask a question, he found himself unable to speak.

The masked figure standing at the door smiled, then turned to Purist. 'You shouldn't blame him for what he failed to do.' The figure said, watching with amusement as Purist opened and closed his mouth several times, trying to speak. 'He can't even remember it.' The figure gestured with his hand, and both Magina and Purist were again able to speak. Grinning once more, the figure nodded to both of them, before saying 'My name is Nortrom.'

Rikimaru ducked his head in the rain, as he began to do his business. Feeling something grab his leg, he looked down and jumped back in shock, as the puddle he was standing in began to form into a figure. He began to scream, only to be cut short as a tentacle of water covered his mouth.

Hearing a commotion outside the door, Magina, Nortrom and Purist turned to see a being made of water holding a struggling Rikimaru. Nortrom said something in a strange language, and the being dropped Rikimaru, before growling. Nortrom smiled and shook his head, before turning to the three junior members of the squad. 'This is your other leader' he said. 'Meet Morphling.'

Rikimaru looked up at Morphling and scowled, before continuing to wring water from his tail.

The ship docked, and Abbadon turned to Darkterror and Kel'thuzad. 'We will get off here' he said, before turning to Razor. 'You have your orders,' he said, before pointing at the fifth squad member. 'Take her with you.'

Nortrom looked at his squad, before looking at Morphling and grinning. Turning back to the junior members, he began to speak. 'Morphling and I plan to take you on a little stroll of the area we are meant to be protecting. At the same time, we want you to show us any spells or abilities you know.'

Rikimaru gulped. 'Go out? Now?' he asked, barely disguised fear in his voice.

Nortrom smiled. 'Why not?' he answered. 'It's a beautiful day.' As he said this, thunder shook the small room they were in.

Particles ran together, atoms bonded. Suddenly a hole appeared in the blue liquid, and it began to scream. Nobody heard it. Silence once again filled the space above the planet.

Nortrom looked back at the other members of his squad. Ducking their heads against the rain, the ran from tree to tree, trying to keep dry. Suddenly Magina looked at Nortrom, his head moving from side to side, as if looking for something. 'Someone is coming,' he said suddenly. 'Someone evil.'

Nortrom gestured at the rest of his squad, and Morphling quickly dissolved itself, carrying the junior members behind a group of large bushes. Turning back to the direction that Magina had indicated, Nortrom saw a purplish creature, with tentacles for arms and a face out of a nightmare. 'Darkterror.' Nortrom said.

Darkterror nodded at Nortrom, before drawing his weapon. 'Where is you friend?' he asked, 'He normally follows you everywhere.'

Nortrom shook his head, before concentrating his mana into his hand 'Why would I tell you?' he asked, grinning as a large glaive appeared. 'I don't know how you got this far, but you're not getting any further!' he shouted, throwing the glaive at Darkterror.

Darkterror merely gestured at the weapon, and it slowed to a standstill. Stepping out of its path, he began to sprint at Nortrom. Nortrom's eyes widened in shock, before hardening as he began to concentrate his mana again. Throwing another glaive at Darkterror, he quickly began to form another in his hand, ready to throw. Darkterror froze the second glaive, before disappearing and reappearing behind Nortrom. Nortrom began to spin his glaive, trying to cut Darkterror, but he found himself attacking thin air. Looking behind him, he saw Darkterror place his hand on Nortrom's back, and he was suddenly unable to move.

Darkterror shook his head before saying, 'Too easy.' He swung his weapon at Nortrom's head, before stopping as he heard the sound of rushing water. Looking up, he saw what appeared to be a giant wave in the form of a fist.

At this moment, Kel'thuzad appeared and began to freeze the giant wave of water. As the ice traveled along the fist, it began to slow, before stopping completely a few inches from the lich. Kel'thuzad collapsed, stopping only to form a wall of ice around himself.

Darkterror gestured, and Abbadon appeared, striding towards the now frozen Morphling. Drawing his sword, he inverted it so the pommel was facing Morphling, before swinging his sword at the ice.

Nortrom watched helplessly as the sword traveled towards his friend, and struggled to move.

High above, the liquid entered the planet's atmosphere and began to burn across the sky.

Shattered

Behind the cover of a bush, Rikimaru, Purist and Magina watched with horror as Abaddon's sword swung towards Morphling. 'There has to be something we can do!' whispered Rikimaru.

Magina looked uneasy, before appearing to come to a decision. 'There is!' he said before turning back to the fight.

Purist chuckled and turned to Magina. 'What could you possibly do?' he asked, contempt in his voice.

Magina smiled, then appeared to concentrate. 'Th-' he began, disappearing. An instant later he reappeared in between Abaddon and Morphling, an instant before Abaddon's sword smashed Morphling. '-is' Magina finished, before the wind was driven from him by the pommel of Abaddon's sword.

Abaddon was momentarily stunned by shock, but recovered quickly, driving his elbow into Magina's doubled over back. Magina collapsed to the ground, struggling to breath, as Abaddon once more swung his sword at Morphling.

Darkterror watched the battle with interest, noting that the ground around Kel'thuzad was beginning to turn grey, and that many of the plants around him had become withered.

Behind Darkterror, Nortrom's fingers began to move, as the spell that Darkterror had cast began to wear off.

Magina watched as Abaddon's sword swung towards Morpling's frozen form, and realised that he would have to block it. He began to concentrate, but realised that he would not have enough time to teleport. At the last instant, he thrust his arm into the air, blocking the sword. There was a loud snap, as Magina's arm was shattered by the force of the blow.

Abaddon snarled in anger, before grinning. 'So, you're going to block every move I make?' he asked, baring his arm as he did so. 'Try to block something you can't see!' As he said this, Abaddon drew his sword over his arm, cutting himself. He then used his other hand to draw a symbol on his arm in blood, before focusing on his hand. Visible only to Abaddon, a ball of pure energy appeared. Abaddon smiled, before throwing the ball into the air. The ball shot upwards, before turning and arcing towards Morphling.

As the last effects of Darkterror's spell wore off, Nortrom gestured with his hand, stopping and sound of his attack reaching Darkterror's ears. Holding out both his hand's, Nortrom concentrated his mana, creating two huge glaives. He proceeded to throw the both at Darkterror.

Sensing something at the last instant, Darkterror turned, and saw both glaives inches from his face. Realising that he would not have enough time to cast a complicated spell, he vented as much of his mana as he could, directing it at the glaives. The effect was instant; both glaives exploded into clouds of rust. Having spent most of his mana, Darkterror collapsed to his knees, looking up at Nortrom.

'Can't have much mana left after that, can you?' Nortrom taunted, before throwing two more glaives.

Darkterror jumped to his feet, and struggled to cast the spell required to slow time. Both glaives slowed, and Darkterror grinned in triumph, a grin that was quickly wiped from his face as the glaives sped up again, slashing his arm and chest. Nortrom gestured, and both glaives turned and arced back at Darkterror. Realising that he did not have enough mana left to slow time, Darkterror again vented his mana at the two glaives. This time, the effect was less noticeable, as the two glaives slowly began to rust, leaving a cloud of red dust in their wake.

Darkterror realised that the two glaives would still hit him before they had finished aging, and reached deep into his reserves, dragging up the last of his mana and throwing it at the glaives. The glaives exploded, as Darkterror collapsed to the ground, unconscious.

Magina sensed a huge concentration of mana arcing towards Morphling, and teleported into the air, directly in the path of the energy ball. There was a huge explosion, and Magina was thrown to the ground. He grinned, knowing that he had stopped the ball.

Abaddon's eyes widened in shock. 'How did he-' he began, before shaking his head. 'It doesn't matter. He won't be getting up after that.' Redrawing his sword, Abaddon prepared to shatter Morphling, before seeing Nortrom standing over Darkterror, about to cut his head off with a glaive. Abaddon quickly gestured, and a shield of sickly green light appeared around Darkterror.

Nortrom noticed the shield to late in his attack to stop, and his glaive sunk into the shield. For a brief second, nothing happened, then the shield exploded, throwing Nortrom into a tree.

Abaddon smiled, then snarled in anger as Magina appeared next to him, slashing with his blade. Abaddon quickly parried the attack, then grabbed Magina and threw him deeper into the forest.

Magina flew through the air, leaving snapped branches in his wake, and struggled to concentrate. Please, he thought, let me do it this time. An instant before hitting a huge tree, he disappeared, then reappeared behind Abaddon, swinging his blade at Abaddon's neck. Abaddon gestured, and another shield appeared, blowing Magina into the base of a tree, where he slumped, unconscious.

Rikimaru began to fade into the air, before being grabbed by Purist. 'What are you doing?' Purist demanded.

Rikimaru gestured towards the battle, before replying 'What do you think? Saving Magina.'

Purist shook his head, then sneered and said 'Not yet. Let him die.'

Disgust filled Rikimaru's face as he looked at his childhood friend. 'I helped you pick on Magina in the academy, but this is too far!' He shouted angrily.

Purist merely smiled, before turning to Rikimaru. 'He let his brother escape! He was weak, when he should have been strong! He deserves no help.' Purist cried.

Rikimaru shook his head. 'It's not the same Magina! He can't even remember doing it!' he cried, throwing off Purist's arm as he did so. 'And even if he did, Morphling is in danger as well!'

Purist's face contorted in anger. 'If you go, you are dead to me!' he yelled.

Rikimaru shook his head sadly, before becoming transparent. 'Goodbye, Purist,' he said sadly, before becoming completely invisible.

Abaddon stood over Magina, contempt in his eyes. Baring both arms, he drew his sword across them both, cutting them deeply. Grimacing in pain, Abaddon drew several signs on his arms, muttering in an archaic language as he did so. He then drew both his hands together, before concentrating on the space in between. The forest began to glow a sickly green, as a huge ball of concentrated mana appeared in Abaddon's hands. He raised his arms, ready to throw the ball. 'You were an annoying opponent,' he said. 'Now, d-ARGH!'

Abaddon screamed in pain as a blade appeared to sprout from his stomach. Turning his head, he saw Rikimaru, preparing to cut of Abaddon's head. Abaddon quickly made a gesture, an instant before Rikimaru's blade hit his neck.

Rikimaru stopped, puzzled. His blade had hit Abaddon's neck, but instead of separating head from body, it had failed to even cut him. Pulling his blade from Abaddon's chest, he swung it at Abaddon, and was again shocked when the blade was unable to penetrate Abaddon's skin. Rikimaru began a barrage of attacks, trying to kill Abaddon.

Abbadon smiled as he felt the satyr attack him, giving energy to the spell he had cast. Grimacing in pain, he felt the wound in his chest heal, as Rikimaru stopped his onslaught, panting. Swinging his blade, Rikimaru tried once more to sever Abaddon's neck. Gesturing quickly, Abaddon created a shield around his neck. Rikimaru's arm was nearly torn from it's socket, as the shield exploded, sending his blade flying.

Abaddon turned to face Rikimaru, sword at the ready, as Rikimaru looked in horror at the healed wound in Abaddon's chest. 'Oh no,' Rikimaru whispered.

Abaddon merely grinned, before charging at Rikimaru.

The wall of ice around Kel'Thuzad receded, and the lich got to his feet, re-energised after draining energy from his surroundings. Looking at the still frozen Morphling, he noticed a large branch directly above the sculpture. Kel'Thuzad gestured, and ice began to form at the base of the branch.

Nortrom jumped to his feet, shaking his head to clear his vision. Looking at Morphling, he saw Kel'Thuzad, and realised what he was trying to do. Nortrom quickly formed two glaives, and threw them at Kel'Thuzad.

The lich saw the two glaives from the corner of his eye, and gestured. Instantly, ice covered the two glaives, and unable to continue in their trajectory, they fell to the ground.

Realising that a ranged assault would be useless, Nortrom sprinted towards Kel'Thuzad, hoping that he would reach the lich before he succeeded. Suddenly there was a loud crack, as the branch above Morphling broke apart from the tree, no longer able to sustain it's own weight. Nortrom watched with horror as the branch smashed to the ground, shattering Morphling. Nortrom howled with rage, and continued his charge at Kel'Thuzad.

Turning, the lich gestured, and the the air in front of Nortrom froze solid. Unable to stop his charge, Nortrom ran directly into the wall of ice, knocking himself unconscious.

Rikimaru struggled to parry Abaddon's attacks, realising that Abaddon was the superior swordsman. 'What's the matter satyr?' Taunted Abaddon, 'No shadows to hide in?'

There was a loud shattering noise, and Abaddon stopped his attack, looking over Rikimaru's shoulder. The satyr took advantage of the brief respite, and took several steps back. Noticing that Magina had begun to stir, Rikimaru yelled 'Magina!'

Magina's head snapped up, as he heard his name being yelled. Quickly taking in the situation, he realised that they were losing the battle.

Noticing that Magina was now awake, Rikimaru quickly formulated a plan. 'Can you teleport?' he asked, as Abaddon turned back to him.

Magina nodded, before replying,'But no more than twice.'

Rikimaru grinned, before ducking an attack from Abaddon. 'Good, that's all we need!' he yelled, parrying a slash to his neck. 'On my signal, teleport to Nortrom and then again to Purist.'

Magina nodded, before saying,'I hope you have a distraction.'

Rikimaru smiled, drawing two small flasks from his tunic as he did so. 'You could say that,' he replied, attaching one of the flasks to his blade while dodging an attack from Abaddon. Throwing one of the flasks to the ground, Rikimaru threw his blade at Kel'Thuzad. The lich merely gestured, and the blade and flask dropped to the ground, where the flask shattered.

Rikimaru grinned as smoke began to emit from the shattered flask, before stepping on the flask at his feet, releasing the smoke. 'GO NOW' he yelled to Magina.

Magina teleported to Nortrom, and under the cover of the smoke grabbed him, before teleporting behind the bush that Purist was hiding behind.

'Be seeing you,' Rikimaru taunted, before fading into the smoke. Abaddon's blade cut the spot that Rikimaru had been in a second before, but hit only air.

Nortrom slowly regained consciousness, and saw Magina and Rikimaru standing over them, concern on their faces. Getting to his feet, he saw that they were in another part of the forest. Turning, he saw Purist looking at Rikimaru with disgust. 'What-' he began, before being interrupted by Purist.

'He helped Magina' Purist replied.

Nortrom's eyes widened in shock, and he snorted in in disgust. 'That is the most pathetic excuse I have ever heard. I don't care if you hate Magina, he is a fellow soldier, and you will help him in combat!' Nortrom shouted. 'And not just that,' Nortrom continued, his voice beginning to break, 'But thanks to you, the Sentinel has lost a valuable soldier!' Breaking into tears, he finished, 'And I have lost a friend.' Regaining his composure, he turned to Purist, anger in his eyes. 'When we return, you will face a full military tribunal.'

Purist opened his mouth to protest, but found that he was unable to speak. Nortrom winked at him, before turning to Rikimaru. 'Do we know why they were here?' he asked.

Rikimaru smiled, and pulled a folded piece of parchment from his tunic. 'I swiped this off Abaddon,' he replied, unfolding it to reveal a map.

Nortrom took the map from Rikimaru, before saying, 'This is the area of sea close to this forest. What could they possibly want with it?'

'It say's here that something is going to fall from space,' Rikimaru said, tapping some writing on the map with his finger. 'So whatever they're after is going to be here,' he continued pointing to an island on the map with a large X on it.

'What's going to fall from the sky?' asked Nortrom.

'A weapon, a creature, we don't know and it doesn't matter!' replied Magina. 'The point is we need to stop them from getting their hands on whatever it is!'

Nortrom nodded before pointing to a path leading away from the clearing they were in. 'This is the fastest way to get there.' he said, getting to his feet.

Landing

Razor looked up at the sky, watching lightning flicker, ripping the sky asunder. Behind him, the fifth squad member shifted nervously, gripping her weapon. Razor smiled, turning to face her. 'Don't worry so much,' he said. 'As long as we kill it quickly, we have nothing to worry about.'

The fifth squad member nodded uneasily, her eyes focused on the sky.

Nortrom stepped out of the forest, flanked by Magina and Rikimaru. He looked out across the ocean, before focusing on an island in the distance. Turning to face his squad, he spoke. 'I can see why they were focusing on Morphling.' Noticing the unspoken question on Rikimaru's face, Nortrom continued. 'That island is almost completely underwater at high tide. If Morphling was still alive, we would have had a huge advantage in battle.'

Magina grimaced in pain, holding his broken arm. 'But why would it matter?' he asked. 'We wouldn't have seen them anyway.'

Nortrom's shook his head slowly, before replying, 'We would have brought you here, to give you an idea of the sea to the south of Kalimador. Darkterror must have foreseen that.'

Purist stumbled from the forest, having lagged behind during the walk to the coast. 'You could have waited!' he yelled, anger in his voice.

Nortrom turned to Purist, gesturing at Magina as he did so. 'Heal his arm now,' he ordered. Turning back to the ocean, he continued, 'We need to be ready to fight.'

Purist smiled coldly, shaking his head. 'I will not heal that traitor!' he yelled, contempt apparent on his face.

Hurtling through the atmosphere, the liquid writhed, reforming itself into a ball.

Razor looked up, as a strange chiming sound filled the air. Directly above him, a ball of blue liquid hurtled downwards, gaining speed with every second. Drawing his weapon, he turned to the fifth squad member, gesturing for her to move backwards. She nodded, nocking an arrow to her bow, before moving into the cover of some trees.

The chiming sound grew louder, and Razor looked back up the sky, to see the orb just above his head. Realising his danger at the last instance, he tried to jump out of the way, knowing that this action was futile.

The orb crashed into the ground, crushing Razor beneath it as it landed.

Nortrom turned back to Purist, anger in his eyes. 'Your vendetta with Magina has gone far enough!' he shouted. 'You will heal him!'

Magina shook his head, before interrupting. 'You can't change his mind,' he said, 'We'll just have to hope that we don't have to fight.' He then voiced a question. 'How do we get to the island?'

Nortrom turned to Magina, explaining his plan. 'I was hoping that you would be able to teleport us across.'

'I can't carry all of you,' Magina replied. 'I don't have the mana to carry more than two people.' As he said this, a brilliant blue light lit up the sky, seeming to emanate from the island. An instant later, a cracking sound rent the air.

Nortrom grimaced, before saying, 'I'm guessing that that was the thing falling from the sky.' He turned to Rikimaru, continuing, 'Stay here with Purist, Magina and I will teleport across.'

Magina nodded, placing his hand on Nortrom's back. An instant later, both him and Nortrom vanished.

They reappeared on the island, on the edge of a massive crater. From deep within the earth, a blue light glowed, bathing the island in a midnight blue glow.

Hiding behind a tree, the fifth squad member watched as Magina jumped into the crater, looking for the source of the blue light. She prepared to fire an arrow, but stopped as Nortrom stepped into her line of fire. Hands trembling, she set down her weapon.

Magina reached the center of the crater, the source of the glow. Suddenly the light intensified, as blue liquid began to seep up through the earth. Jumping back, Magina sensed the liquid collect into a single pool, before growing tentacles that reach towards him. Jumping back, he felt as the liquid seemed to solidify, rising in height as the blue light began to fade.

Nortrom looked down into the crater as the liquid formed into a solid pillar, two points of midnight black appearing in it's center. They seemed to look in his direction, and he felt a presence brush his mind, as if looking for something. The presence faded, as the pillar of liquid began to reform, shrinking in size as it did so.

Arms began to grow from the pillar, and the two points of black moved to the top of the pillar. Liquid began to flow upwards from the base of the pillar, as a body began to form. The two eyes began to glow, as the transformation finished.

Magina was stunned by shock, as what appeared to be a copy of Morphling shifted its gaze to him. 'What are you?' he asked, fear in his voice.

The being searched its mind for a word that it knew. The area under the being's eyes shifted, as a mouth began to form.

And then, the being spoke. 'Darchow.'

Chapter 8

Return

Darkterror's motionless body floated in the air, held in place by a sheet of ice. Behind him, Kel'Thuzad motioned for Abaddon to step onto their ship, glancing at an island in the distance as he did so. The light that had shone from it had dimmed quite some time ago, and he hoped that his teammates would be able to contain the being until they arrived.

*

Nortrom staggered, his mind reeling from the strange events that had just unfolded. Below in the crater, the being turned its gaze once more to him, before speaking once again.

'Your friend has died.' It said, in a voice that echoed with power. It was not a question, but a statement.

Nortrom gathered himself, remembering that he had to be strong, before answering. 'Yes,' he answered. 'And those who killed him will be here soon, looking for you.'

Looking on from the forest, the fifth squad member struggled to hold herself back. She could feel the hand of her master in her mind, commanding her to attack with a voice like iron. Somehow she was able to hold back, remembering the time before her servitude to the Lich King.

Magina struggled to feel what was happening, his senses overwhelmed by the mana imprint created by Darchow. His senses, normally so clear, were made blind by the pure energy being expelled. Suddenly, a cry rent the air. It was Nortrom. 'What is it?' he asked.

Nortrom pointed, before remembering who he was talking to. 'They're here,' he replied, panic starting to leak into his voice. A fair distance away, but coming closer every second was a ship. Huge bones made up the majority of the hull, the black paint that they had been coloured with leaking into the water, so that the ship looked like it was gliding on oil. The rest of the ship was made of bluish steel, which swept forward to from a massive spike at the front of the ship. And above it all was- 'The flag of the Lich King,' Nortrom muttered to himself. A skull frozen in ice on a field of black fire, it was only flown by a select handful of ships, one of which belonged to-

*

Abbadon looked on as the island seemed to grow larger, before scowling and turning to the lich by his side. 'Razor is not there,' he said, confirming Kel'Thuzad's fears.

'That means-' the lich began, before Abbadon cut him off.

'It means we put to much faith in our teammates. It means we are too late.' Abbadon untied a length of rope tied to the tiller of the ship, and instantly the speed of the ship nearly doubled, as wind filled the sails. 'All we can do is hope that the being has not left the island yet,' Abaddon finished.

*

Magina grimaced, jumping out of the crater as he did so. Landing next to Nortrom, he held out his arm, beckoning to Darchow at the same time. 'We need to go!' he yelled, as Nortrom gripped his arm. 'You're coming as well,' he said, turning to Darchow. One of Darchow's arms elongated, stretching towards Magina. Magina fought the urge to jump back, and allowed the tentacle to wrap itself firmly around his arm. Gritting his teeth, he pushed through the mana haze created by Darchow and focused on Rikimaru's mana. Focusing, he muttered a single word, and waited for the familiar feeling of teleportation to overtake him.

Nothing happened. On the other side of the island he heard the keel of Abbadon's ship grind into the coast, followed moments later by the sound of a gangplank being lowered. He felt Nortrom's grip tighten around his arm, and answered the question he knew was about to be asked. 'Out of mana,' he explained, knowing that both he and Nortrom were in no state to fight. If they were forced into a prolonged engagement, they would both be killed.

Darchow's form quivered and out of the center of it's body, a brilliant blue orb rose, floating slowly towards Magina. A shrill voice rang out, and it took Magina a few seconds to realise that it was Darchow speaking, his voice weakened.

'Take it!' he cried, as his body shrank, as if lacking the energy to sustain it.

Reaching out his hand, Magina touched the orb, then recoiled as more energy than he had ever felt flowed into his mind, revitalizing him. 'Thank you,' he whispered to Darchow, as the being shrank even more, seeming to be on the verge of collapse. Concentrating once more, he realised that Abbadon and Kel'Thuzad were about to burst into the clearing, as well as- Magina's head snapped around to the trees behind him, where another enemy had stood all along. Time was short. Focusing, he cried out one word. 'Caecus!'

All three disappeared in a flash of light, which quickly dissipated as a sword, a spike of ice and a volley of arrows passed through the space that had been occupied by Magina.

'Damn it!' yelled Abaddon. Turning to the fifth squad member, he snarled. 'This is your fault! If you had not been so preoccupied with ties from your former life, we could have stopped them!'

*

Rikimaru looked up as light filled the clearing he and Purist had been sitting in. Three figures appeared, and as Rikimaru looked on, one of them collapsed.

Magina felt Darchow's arm relinquish it's hold, moments before the being collapsed to the ground. 'Darchow?' he cried, before stooping to try and find his pulse. It was there, but weak. Turning to Nortrom, he spoke, fear in his voice. 'He needs to get to the infirmary.'

Nortrom pointed to Purist. 'He can help,' he replied.

Purist shook his head, before speaking. 'I'm not doing anything Magina wants.'

Nortrom's eyes clouded over in anger, and he seemed on the verge of hitting Purist, before shaking his head, realising the futility of arguing. 'We need to get back to Mount Hyjal,' he said. 'We can get care for Darchow there.'

Magina nodded, before picking Darchow up. By this time he was so small that Magina could lift him with one hand. He hoped that they would be able to get to Mount Hyjal in time. For if they didn't, Morphling's death would have been in vain.

*

Abbadon lay blow after blow into the fifth squad member, pausing between strikes to speak. 'You. Must. Forget. Your. Former. Life. Because. Of. Your. Incompetence. You. May. Have. Doomed. Us. All.'

Kel'Thuzad watched impatiently, waiting for Abbadon to finish venting his anger. Abruptly the death knight stopped, panting after his onslaught. The fifth squad member uncurled herself, pain apparent in her features.

Suddenly, all three squad members froze, as a voice filled their head. It was the voice of their master, filled with impatience. 'Are you quite finished?' it asked.

Abbadon blanched, realising he had drawn his master's anger. 'Yes my lord,' he replied. 'Please, allow me to explain. It was her fault that-'

'Silence!' the Lich King's voice roared, the anger in his voice cutting into his servant's minds. 'You have failed me, and now you blame another?'

'My lord-' began Kel'Thuzad, hoping that he would be able to reason with his master.

'You will not be able to weasle your way out of this lich,' interrupted the Lich King. 'You are as much at fault as your fellow teammates. Know this. Until the being is killed, you will not have safe passage in Northrend. Return to me with the being's heart, or not at all. Now go! And do not fail me again!'

*

Magina strode through the Southern Gates of Mount Hyjal, before searching for the mana of Chen. An instant later he was in the eastern infirmary, much to the surprise of Chen. Showing him Darchow, he spoke, his voice breathless after the run to the Sentinel camp. 'Needs. Help.'

It is actually good. But still quite boring on its own. A lot of forummers here have short attention-span, so they will not find it interesting yet. Post something that would interest them. Probably...something why he moved to the Scourge side?

Oh, and please do comment on my fic, The Newbie Team's Rise and Fall. Like yours, it has no comments yet.

Thanks.

I plan to do this in later chapters, it's to do with him slowly becoming evil. I havn't written more yet because I was unsure if people actually liked it.

Oh, I see.

Enigma's not really a good hero to do fanfiction with. And serious fiction wouldn't really score a lot of hits.

I have a lot of fanfictions at DA Forums that got a lot of hits

Anyways, you should write for yourself...for your own improvement. If you don't like what you're writing, it's best to stop. If you do, then go ahead continue. It will then be a great story.

Okay, that was too much. :O

Thanks! Second stage written up, planning to upload when I get more posts. Thanks for ideas. Only reason that I didn't name planets is because the first one get's wiped out early, and I'm fairly sure the actual DOTA/Warcraft planet already has a name.

Well... even if it gets wiped out a name still would have been nice! Anyways, keep up the good work - I look forward to reading more!

I Have Returned!
Well that came out a bit weird. Sorry for the huge wait, but I will start posting every weekend now. Until next week, enjoy.

Quote:

Whoa! Nice chapter 2. It is a bit short, I must say, and may not be able to gather as much readers as you may like.

Btw, "cycle of destruction and rebirth"... Are you implying something here? Intriguing...

Will wait for chapter 3.

I know, but the weird thing is that whatever I write comes out much smaller than I think it will be. O.o

The cycle thing hadn't occured to me actually, but I like the idea.

Time for another chapter. This one is longer, as I am not just describing Enigma.

Note: Parts of the story are based on DOTA 6.59, as this is before Enigma went Scourge. So new heroes and some new items won't be in it. Just so you know.

Quote:
