Post Newbie Team PROJECT,The Rise and Fall of the Newbs

The Story of the Newbie Team, "Team Rebellion"
The rise and fall of the aspiring DotA players

Author's Notes:
This story is about a group of newbies who decided to play DotA as a team...in public games.

Note that the players in this story are not pro players. They will get beaten when they fight against awesome players. Their strategies might be inaccurate.

Have fun reading, and please comment if you have any reactions!!

Characters:
Jenro [TheTactician]
Jenro is a young and intelligent 15-year old kid, and is the main protagonist of this story. Even though he’s only been playing DotA for four months, he has learned to analyze situations really well, though he has a lot to learn. He’s moody, a lover of peace, and serious with whatever he does. Jenro wants to make a difference—by forming “Team Rebellion”.

Team Role: Team leader, supporter, tank
Favorite Heroes: Mangix, Visage, Huskar, Ish'kafel
Favorite Items: Eul's Scepter of Divinity, Magic Wand, Tangos
Characteristics: Analytical, intelligent, physically weak, untalkative, peace-loving, weird, doesn't look like much of a DotA player
Interests: Writing fiction, Computer games, MP3 emo/alternative songs
Dislikes: Unpleasant and rude behavior, trashtalk, The Butterfly and Battlefury
Background Story: Jenro is an only child. He has been alone most of the time, especially since both of his parents are at work all the time. His mother works at a different country and his father doesn’t care for him at all which leaves him sorrowful and quite unsure of himself.
Strengths: Players underestimate him, can formulate devastating strategies with the right allies, knowledge about countering heroes, quick thinker, and denies more than he does last-hitting.
Weaknesses: Could only implement strategies with the proper allies who would obey him

Munin [DarkMunin_27]
A young, average DotA playing kid. Munin looks weak and fragile, but his will to win and his ability to focus real well is his good asset. He’s only a newbie who’s been playing for two days, but with Jenro’s instructions and proper coordinations, Jenro brought out Munin’s inner fire—an ability that can never be replaced by any other DotA player.

Team Role: Ganker, Disabler, Semi-Carry
Favorite Heroes: Raijin, Lion, Bat Rider
Favorite Items: Phase Boots, Force Staff
Characteristics: A real friendly young kid, though still quite young. He is nice, a bit frail and girlish but still firm in his actions
Interests: Computer games, sketching, art
Dislikes: Being down
Background story: Munin is an average guy. His family is somewhat short on income, and his father works as a construction worker while his mother tends to their store. Munin is the eldest among 5 younger boys and girls.
Strengths: Players underestimate him, really strong when give instructions and with a partner, has quick fingers and always remembers hotkeys
Weaknesses: Will never own without any directions or instructions, but when instructed properly, he will be a good player. He also has a very difficult time playing 5v5 games.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"A DotA team. Let's form one, and let's see who's better--a group of coordinating newbies who help each other, who communicates well and helps in every way to win or a group of people who never care at all for his teammates and curse each other and talk crap?"
It wasn't such a good idea for Jenro, only been playing DotA for less than four months, to say something like that to a bunch of people he barely even knew. He said that one battle where he played as Mangix, his favorite hero, and frequently typed in allied chat about what his other teammates would do.
Their reaction--STFU noob.
Damn it, Jenro was heavily frustrated. He never did anything wrong…he just wanted to lead others to that victory that he always longed for.
And others blamed him for his team losing.
"These crap of a people frustrate me so much, I'm in a rancor right now..." Jenro stated to himself, after exiting the game.
Jenro couldn't face it. He knew full well that DotA is a game that required teamwork. But these people he played with didn't understand it a single bit. He watched that one replay of Ks.int, how they played in an awesome manner--coordinating real well and calculating each moves and patterns brilliantly, and without failure.
But these people he played with in battle.net think DotA as something different. People only play for their own achievements, people never care for their other teammates, people never bother to save a dying ally being chased and slowed by a Viper. People only play it for fun, for the most coveted Beyond Godlike streak. They never care about others, they only care about themselves. Yes, people play to look good. People play to become invincible to the eyes of others. People didn’t care. People didn’t bother.
Jenro, the analytical and annoyed 15 year-old kid, had his dreams put to an end.
Or so he thought.
-------------The Story of A Newbie Team------------
The rise and fall of the aspiring DotA players.
Turn 01: An Allegiance Formed
Jenro slouched, wearing that usual angry and annoyed look on his face. He rearranged his glasses often—those glasses that made him look like a nerd. Not much people were acquainted with him in the classroom, but they knew full well that Jenro was intelligent.
Jenro was in 8th grade, class C. Despite his lazy and lame demeanor, many knew him for his intelligence and smarts. He was appreciated by his professors—he had that knowledge none of his classmates had. He was different, he was a genius.
One day, Jenro was walking in the busy streets of Newborne Town, a town filled with smoke, vehicles, karaoke bars and shirtless guy hanging out. It was a crowded town, but you can see the clouds at the skies clearly.
It was that day he got into DotA. Somehow he was curious about it, though he wasn't really psyched when someone asked him to play. He thought of it as your average, "killing-similar-to-Counter-Strike" game, but it seems he was mistaken.
Jenro has been familiar with Warcraft III before. He played some of the characters there and noticed Kardel, the rifleman. He never really seemed to like it that much because of the concept of killing, but he was wrong. He never did really well with the game (last-hitting, farming, killing was not his forte) but his ability to calculate the situations was astounding, but he didn't have the proper reactions and abilities to put them to work. He also knew all 90+ heroes in just a matter of days.
But no one cared.
People were like that anyway. They never cared at all. We, the human race, are selfish. We can’t deny that.
He always played with the annoying, shirtless, (maybe even brainless) players of the internet cafe by the busy streets of Newborne town, and he never liked the company...and the trashtalk.
Jenro studied the wide variety of items in DotA. For most games, Jenro knew that speed is the lifeblood of battle but Jenro thinks of it as rubbish. Jenro didn't like Butterfly, nor Wraith Bands, nor Agility heroes. He also didn't like the item Battle Fury.
"Battle Fury...it does nothing but crap. I refuse to take an item that does barely anything of use to a team, yes, its good for farming and I see all melee-users buy one, but an item like Battle Fury makes me want to bleed and freeze out in the cold. Something more useful, like Eul's or Orchid could be a better choice, I say."
No one listened to him of course, shirtless guys thought of him as gay, and a statement like that from someone who has never won a game in his entire life? Who would believe it?
One Thursday afternoon, 2:00 PM, Jenro visited the usual internet cafe he played at. It was filled to the brim, though--filled with shirtless, manly, buffed up guys playing DotA. Jenro quickly turned his back, slapped his forehead as he mumbled some stupid things, cursing the uncivilized actions of the dirty and rude men, and entered the internet cafe by the other street.
Good. It wasn't full.
The kids there, about younger than his age--say 12 or 13, were playing DotA. Jenro studied their performances, and even corrected a Naix player to change his Agility Treads to Strength Treads, but this kid ignored him and stated, "It doesn't matter, noob! AGI is cooler, and more life steal for NAIX, you know?!"
Jenro slapped his forehead.
Of all the players, there was one guy who caught his attention, a kid about the same age as his, playing as Raijin the Storm Spirit.
"Awesome." Jenro couldn't help but say, as Raijin balled himself into the enemy Sniper, shot his overload at him, cast a Static Remnant, shot his overload at him and then pulled him into his Vortex and shot another overload and cast another remnant and another overload. The Sniper however, got away with just a sliver of health, and Raijin was killed by the ambushing players Anub'arak and Manta-Razor.
"What happened?" Jenro asked the Raijin-player.
"Damn," The Raijin player said to Jenro, as he waited for his hero to respawn, "I just acted too badly. I'm not such a good player yet, I've only played since yesterday. That was entirely my fault."
"But you still did a good job...For someone who's only been playing for 2 days. I couldn't have done something like that." Jenro stated.
"Thanks. Hey, why don't you join?"
"Sure."
Jenro made his way towards an empty computer beside the Raijin player after talking to the lady on the counter. Jenro then double-clicked Frozen Throne, and joined a game created by "Dark_Munin27", the Raijin-player beside him.
Jenro, username as "The Tactician", chose his favorite hero, Mangix, after the host typed -apnpsp, a popular mode in that cafe.
Jenro bought some Gauntlets, and then some Tangos. His allies were "RICHARD13", Lycanthrope; "FireBlade_13", Enchantress; and "Dark_Munin27", Raijin.
Jenro analyzed the heroes picked by the enemies--"RoLo_L", Drow Ranger; "^__^", Dragon Knight; "RaZorRuLeS", Lightning Revenant; and "n00b_4ever" as Clinkz.
"Good. The heroes they picked are quite fragile." Jenro thought, as he marched toward Top Sentinel, "DK might be a problem, but Enchantress' Impetus could pierce through his defenses..."
Then, Jenro felt a tap on his shoulder, which came from "Dark_Munin27", the Raijin-player.
"Let's lane together," he said.
"Fine by me," Jenro typed nimbly, responding in allied chat. Jenro didn't like talking, and instead typed it quickly in chat.
Both Pandas marched through top lane as the treants and druids appeared. Jenro was confident now, he knew Raijin was a good player, he believed that he only lacked instructions and he knew this awesome player could pwn any hero that dare cross his path.
"Clinkz alone at top," Dark_Munin27 said, as he saw Clinkz arrive in top lane.
"Uh-oh...two of them here!" noob_4ever stated, as he received an attack from Raijin and Mangix, but pressed his panic button, Wind Walk, "No you're never gonna kill me!"
"That Clinkz' Wind Walk is going to be trouble...but if he's in a terrible location and his Wind Walk is on cooldown, that's the time to act..." Jenro thought, formulating a plan to make the Clinkz player first blood.
But then, Jenro saw Dark_Munin27 type in allied chat. "Tell me when to act, ok?"
Jenro smiled and typed "Sure".
After a few levels, that moment Jenro had been waiting for finally arrived. Clinkz had wind walked away, but then suddenly popped back again to last-hit a creep. Jenro knew that his Wind Walk was on cooldown and he was far from the tower, so it was the time to act, and so he typed "Now" on allied chat.
Raijin quickly obeyed and cast a vortex on Clinkz, and was greeted by a clap from Mangix and an overload from Raijin. Mangix continued to attack the disabled Clinkz and Raijin cast a remnant and attacked Clinkz for an overload charge.
"First Blood!" noob_4ever's head was pwned by Dark_Munin27! Dark_Munin27 just drew First Blood! Assists: The Tactician
"Yes! That was awesome." Jenro thought to himself. He turned to the Raijin player, who was smiling at him and had a hand reached out, meant to be a high-five.
"That was awesome...you did a good job coordinating with me," the Raijin player said. Jenro smiled back, and made a high-five with the Raijin player and turned back to his game.
Finally, someone who's not arrogant and would just listen to my calculations... Jenro thought to himself.
The battle ended, Jenro's team winning the match. Dark_Munin27 listened to everything that Jenro said, and together they coordinated--Dark_Munin27 earning a Monster Kill streak. Jenro assisted him all through out, telling him what to do and by being the tank of the team. Whenever he was with Raijin, he'd clap someone who was pulled by his vortex and split, Cycloning the hindrance namely Dragon Knight and hurling a boulder towards either 3 Agility heroes, receiving all the damage dealt by the Storm Spirit.
"This is awesome. My 2nd day of playing DotA and getting a Monster Kill...thanks a lot."
The Raijin-player introduced himself as Munin, 15 years of age.
Jenro sighed a sigh of relief. It doesn't matter to Jenro that he didn't get any kills, but he was glad his dream of gaining teamwork will be fulfilled.
"Hey, Munin." Jenro said, as they were walking out the internet cafe into the busy streets of Newborne Town.
"What?" Munin said.
"Let's form a team, a team that will bring chaos to these arrogant players...a team that would value teamwork, coordination, and communication. Something that would leave their jaws wide open, shocked at their unimaginable loss. Let's form...Team Rebellion."
Munin didn't know what Jenro was talking about.
END OF TURN 01.
Tama, mga **** na tambay. Top 1 yata 'to sa English (Nasa High School pa lang po ako). Yep, humans are selfish. You could really tell from public games these days, just taking items from the circle that aren't theirs--napakaisip-bata. Hindi nila alam kung alin yung sa kanila at alin yung hindi.
Guys, thanks a lot for the comments. I appreciate all of them. I am looking for more comments and criticism on how the story flows. Some advice for this story is what I need! Also, if you want to be included in the story with a cameo, please do tell via PM. Thanks. Will post next turn soon.
my advice would be: don't make jenro a complete genius, let him be just exceptionaly smart, but not genius. also, don't let munin be just a skillful idiot, don't make him a puppet of jenro
Whoow, that was the first constructive criticism I got. Thanks a lot, Sid
Sure I will take that into account. Jenro and Munin both still has flaws (they will lose in the future) in this story, you know. Really, thanks again for your comment I appreciate it, it helps a lot
Note: Since I have obtained a lot of comments already, I will post the next turn! Check this out please
------------The Story of A Newbie Team------------
The rise and fall of the aspiring DotA players.
Turn 02: Against The Flow of the World's River
"Attack!"
It was another DotA game. Jenro and Munin were getting along pretty well, and no one could destroy their teamwork.
Munin, who controlled the Necrolyte, immediately cast a Death Pulse that chased after the foe, after the Life Break cast by Huskar, controlled by Jenro. He immediately cast his Reaper's Scythe, while Huskar kept throwing his spears at him. Munin also cast a Mekansm to heal Huskar's wounds.
"MmmmmEGA KILLL!!!"
"Alright!"
A smile formed on Jenro's face. He was real happy now, but he remained serious as he picked up his Heart from a courier. He had never owned this way before--at least with his new friend, Munin.
Even if he owned now, something’s still missing. Something in his heart he could not decipher.
It was another afternoon, 2:00 PM, and Jenro was in Munin's house—it wasn’t really that a big house. The walls weren’t painted, and were mostly made of cemented blocks and patched-up metals. There were a bunch of children playing outside, and Jenro guessed they were Munin’s younger siblings.
“Hey! Get back inside.” Munin shouted. The kids didn’t hear him and resumed playing, but one approached Jenro and Munin.
“Brother! Is he a friend you?” The kid asked. Jenro guessed that he was about 7 years old.
“Uh, yeah.” Munin replied.
The kid turned to Jenro and asked him cheerfully, “So you wanna fight me 1v1? My Meepo will pwn you!”
Jenro smiled at the kid and replied, “Meepo, huh? You sure you can do that?”
“Yeah!!”
Jenro felt happy as he looked at the young kid. He sure wasn’t like that when he was young, and he could never micro all the Meepos.
"What were you saying back then? About making a team--if I heard right?" Munin asked suddenly.
Jenro nodded, "Yeah, a team that will change the course of DotA public gaming...a team that would value teamwork, coordination, and communication. That's my dream, and I'm hoping you'd help me form one."
"That's nice, Jenro..." Munin replied, "It'd be cool to be part of your team. But I tell you...it would be really difficult. A lot of people these days just think about themselves--what others do don't matter to them. They only think about their Butterflies and Linken's...their last-hitting, their level..."
Munin was correct. Today’s people only play DotA for their own achievements—for their own glory and fame. They only seek fame—they want to impress their pals by being Beyond Godlike and become unbeatable, they just play to brag about it. They don’t care about their teammates whether they perish or get slaughtered.
"That's the reason why I'll be making a team. To oppose today's people and form a new generation--a generation of DotA players where they value peace, teamwork, and playing peacefully--without the trashtalk, the putting-the-newbies-down thing...I'd like to change all of that crap!"
Munin just sighed. Jenro was different. Jenro couldn’t understand the patterns of this world, the patterns of the annoying people of Newborne Town. But somehow Munin doesn’t like those people, too. Their getting along well with their ‘Double Panda’ combo, but what more if there are other allies? It will be a hell of a hard time.
“Dad, I’m home.”
Jenro arrived home from school, putting his sling bag down on the floor beside the couch. He called out to his father, but he never found him anywhere. His mother, on the other hand, worked in another country, only sending money for their family.
Jenro’s an only child, and most of the time, he lived alone at home. Guess he’s alright with that, being alone was no problem to him.
His father would come home from work late at night, mostly entering the house drunk. Jenro’s also used to taking him up the stairs to his bedroom.
Yeah, sometimes, Jenro’s sick of his life alone. He sometimes wished for an older brother, an older brother who’d teach him how to go to the internet shop without a shirt on and make pals with all the shirtless guys at the internet café. He also sometimes wished for a decent father, a father who’d just damn stop drinking…a father who would’ve taught him how to have fun back in his childhood.
‘Coz he never had fun. He never had friends.
He’s sick of all the indecent behavior the public is showing—making fun of people who walk along the streets; just wanting to ruin their ruined day even more, those people who never care about their life; the people who just couldn’t stand all those problems and vent them out on alcohol and worthless parties, the laughing-at-people thing…he’s sick of the entire world’s ways. He wants to change it—like how he wants to change DotA gaming.
He doesn’t want to suffer from them anymore.
Jenro remembered that time, it was something he could never forget…ever—he played as Rigwarl, the Bristleback.
His teammates made fun of him. He was teased, he was cursed, and whenever he engaged an enemy in combat, all his teammates would back away, leaving poor Bristleback to die effortlessly.
When Jenro asked him what items to buy Rigwarl, or when he would die from something that was planned thoroughly, they’d mutter curses and insolent words flowed from their mouths tainted with mischief and arrogance.
In the end, they considered –switch with the enemy. But Jenro couldn’t take it any longer. He quit the worthless game, the precious 45 minutes of his life wasted on filthy, nonsense rubbish.
It was a disgusting experience.
Jenro lay down on his bed—a gray mattress on the floor, with a bedsheet and a pillow—thinking hard. There was absolute silence in his room, and he liked that silence. It was better than hearing teases and insults, smiles and laughter.
End of Turn 02.
Notes: Parts of that Bristleback event really, truly happened to me in real-life. A lot of people here are like that, and you could feel their aura penetrating through you and letting you down. Comments? Storyline improvements? I haven't done Turn 03 yet so you just might have your sugg in the story!
Well, it would be nice to actually get to the plot. We've got the exposition and the mindset of the main character (who resembles Ender Wiggin btw) but I'm actually interested on what his steps are from now on and if his smarts will prove enough to avoid problems.
For this chapter...it was rather wasted. We have one paragraph with a conversation about making the team, just like in the end of the first one and more reasons for why Jenro wants to change pubs. This could have been covered in less words and maybe we would have got something new.
Still, it did keep me reading it and it did made me curious. Just remember this is a forum and you can't write a novel or your readers will get bored. Try to keep a fast progression because it's not a book I can read for hours, but a fan fic that ends after 5 minutes.
One thing: less drama. It's still just a game.
though a tad on the dramatic side, a very fine piece of literature.
For this chapter...it was rather wasted. We have one paragraph with a conversation about making the team, just like in the end of the first one and more reasons for why Jenro wants to change pubs. This could have been covered in less words and maybe we would have got something new.
Still, it did keep me reading it and it did made me curious. Just remember this is a forum and you can't write a novel or your readers will get bored. Try to keep a fast progression because it's not a book I can read for hours, but a fan fic that ends after 5 minutes.
Oh. I see. I do get your point about that, and not a lot of readers would have interest in this story if that were the case. I guess it really was rather wasted, but it is just an introduction to Jenro and Munin's life, which should also be mentioned because they don't live their lives on the game alone. But after that, there's really nothing else concerning those stuff.
I will put your advice to consideration. Thanks a lot for it. If you do want or suggest something for the next chapter, please drop by a comment or PM. Currently the next turn isn't up yet.
Ah, I see. Not a lot of readers a fan of that, I know. I will avoid most of it, but some parts will still have something melancholic in it.
Still great, but i agree with the previous comments that you could have done more with this chapter. It just feels a bit overdramatic. Otherwise though, great!
