Default [Effect] Shadow Raze

Hello, forumers.

One thing what really bugs me about Shadowraze, is the tiny graphical effect, compared to the quite big affected area.
If you just cast shadowraze and look at the effect, you could easily think, it has an AoE of about 100-150 at max.
But it actually has a whooping 275 AoE; so you will get hit by the spell, but the effect is not even close to touch you.
While the effect itself does not even look bad, I suggest changing it, or adding another effect on top of it, to give a better visual expression of the actual AoE of the skill.

For clarifying this, here some paint skillz

Using the skill and just paying attention to the effect causes you to assume a much too small affected area:

However, the skill's AoE is much bigger:

(I recoded Shadowraze to have it available in the testmap, however I use the same values for area of effect like shadowraze has in Dota.)

I did not find a specific effect to work well, in the testmap I included some possibilities (the new nevermore has 4 raze skills (using the same range, though); each skill provides another effect)

Effect 1:

Effect 2:

Effect 3:

€ Effect 4 (suggested by Cano)

Do not judge from the pictures, thought, the models look somewhat different ingame. (first effect looks quite cool on the pic, imo, but ingame it looks kinda strange)

I am not 100% happy with any of them; if anyone knows a fitting effect, or even can create one, please show it to me, so I can include it for the suggestion. Right now, I like the 4rd effect the most.

Note that I am NOT suggesting to keep different effects for different ranges, I suggest choosing one of them (or even another one currently not included in this suggestion) and take it for ALL shadowrazes.

Any improvement suggestion to this thread is welcome.

Thanks for reading.

Best regards
Kueken

#1 is unsmooth. The black cuts off within it. During team fights, will this cover up the scene slightly?

#2 looks better than #1. But has that sound, remove it and I guess this one suits theme.

#3 is my favourite, although I don't think it really has much to do with shadows. More like nature or something.

WHAT. Zinc. T_T, I'm still on vJass You do know who I am right?

Most likely, it looks really cool on the pic but ingame it pretty much sucks :/

indeed, just the sound and the small artillery crater are hindrances

I like #3 the most, too. The effect is plain awesome, but unfortunately it doesn't fit Nevermore's (or Shadowraze's) style.
A black version of this would be superb.

Zinc is not much harder, its just another syntax, more like C (a bit).
I like it more then vJass, because of less verbosity. For lazy bastards like me, having to write less code is awesome

o_0 attachment view counter seems to be kinda buggy, at least you have downloaded the map, I think

I don't like any of them so much..
T-up on the idea, to me, just making the current effect to match its real AoE is OK..

First one looks the shits on screen shot.

But then it test map it just looks like it had to much to drink and died.

Phail

Second one is my personal fav animation. Though I didn't notice the sound on it as poster above me did.

Third one seems to fit best imo. Maybe it is the current one being green and all that, but it really feels like sf to me.

All in all, first one is epic phail, second one is awesome, and third one fits best.

Of course this is just my opinion.

Would be quite hard, just resizing it ingame would increase the z value also; looks really ugly. If someone can change the model accordingly, it would be fine I guess.

Note that, if anyone knows another fitting effect, feel free to suggest it to me .

Love your suggestion!

The 1st icon looks really cool and represents Nevermore's dark/black/evil theme.
The 2nd icon looks fairytale-like + dark theme; not good.
The 3rd icon looks too holy; which is a contrary to Nevermore's theme

T-up on 1st icon!

I don't think you need to change it, I like it the way it is now.
But I really like this one:

The third effects is extremely well done, it just doesn't fit, though. I'd still rather see this effect than 1st or 2nd.
[modifying 3rd effect... ]

I replaced second animation with my own. Note that it can be used 3 times in very short intervals so it can't be too flashy and overwhelming.

Using custom preprocessors to create testmaps makes most people unable to edit the map. I had to modify MPQ itself to replace to file.

The file has 4.3 KB. After compression it should be even smaller.

Edit: APL, why not ICECREAM? Lulz.
