Energy boots, drums, mekans/bkb and dagger... I don't know... pull a friend and heal him, push an enemy... put rock on the ground, blink behind an enemy (don't need to be that precise the range for stunnig is good enough), pull the rock stunning, ultimate, rock on ground, rock on ground, rock on ground... while in Avatar... never going to captain mode but seems fun....

blink is core, bkb (preferably linkens for the reg) blink in force enemy out. place rock into your mates direction where you pushed enemy. roll to it over rock. gg. his job is supporting, setting up kills and he has high utulity with his pull. when youre rolled to enemy and hes slowed 80% either pull a melee mate (naix opr whatever) to you. enemy gets stunned and gg. his ultimate is really useless. well its can be >36silence in theory but srsly good enemys wont be hitted by rocks so easily.
synergy: ds/tiny (-wtf mode pingpong with tiny toss and u push xD xDDD)

He doesnt item dependant, he need more survivability so tanking item/ hitpoint mana boost is good choice.

Urn, drum, thread/phase, pipe, dagger, bkb, taras, linken. Dagger rush is pretty funny for smash and roll combo.

His ulti is really good if you can keep smashing those rocks therefore the bkb is essential blademail works great too. Kind of a tank/support who has great ganking capablities I don't see any carry potential abyssal is a waste whoever said that

Then once early game is done, move onto finishing cloak into hood of defiance into the mid game.

My tip is dont play him at all because unless you have time to set and throw a bunch of rocks around in a battle hes not worth it. Basically a uselless heroe.

You really need practice with him. Hes not your regular new hero whom you can insta pick and proceed to rape even for the first try. *cough* phoenix *cough*

Im starting to love this guy. been playing countless games with him and he's really fun. Solo mid Koalin is really decent. The trick is to play defensively. Wait for enemy to come close, Then roll, Proceed to push him in the tower. Heroes like sf/krob/invo are easy preys. Once you get proper boots and regen items You can buy dagon and play nyxesque raping squishy heroes.

Eventhough the scaling is bad , but the stun duration is always good , especially against pesky heroes with high mobility.
I use smash as a skill that kicks the opponent away from me like Pudge , or to save an ally.

There's an alternate build I have in side lanes is maxing roll and smash (Like you suggested) . Because in side lanes you can rely on allies throwing a stun or slow on them , while solo-mid it's hard to pull it off without letting the target running away.

I think 1 sec stun is enough early game solo mid. 80% slow from roll is even more deadly.
Roll > smash into tower > stun if the hero is still alive.
This is doable at level 3. aggressive mid laners with no escape mech usually dies to this.

If you can get a rock in rolling boulder deals 270 damage and the cd at level 4 is 4. It is his best scaling skill. However it is risky so you might want to max the safer skills like Boulder Smash. So I normally max smash with a level in roll and grip then max roll and lastly grip. However If I'm laning with a decent friend who will help me if I roll in then maxing roll is great too. You can roll in and out in 4 seconds. Great man just great

Maybe I should change my skill build around .
But I still dont think boulder smash as a better skill than grip. Probably because out of the 5 games I have no reliable stun in my team.

Out of most of the new heroes I'll say that this is one of the near balanced one. Just needs some rescaling on skills and maybe a little higher mana cost for his ult.

In early game, bottle, crow, magic stick (for survivality), and boots. 1st thing is phase boots followed by dagger or vanguard 1st before you go for dagger. Lastly, bkb radiance, heart of tarasque. Just kill soft heroe, use instant killing combo. This hero is the best battle support for me.

He's very strong. During early game, what i like doing is pushing the enemy towards the tower. A simple 3rdskill (stun), 2nd skill (roll), 1skill (push). That potentially shoves the enemy back so it's an awesome combo. He's really a powerful hero.

Urn is a great item for him because it can add well with his combos, including his level 6.

Urn then MoM, BKB, and blade mail is the initial build. The reason why is because Earth's initiation game sends him straight towards the hero. Meaning, There are times where you will stun+roll during a hero clash, which brings you straight in the middle. So you need those items to enhance your chance of survival.

there are other good items to add to his combo like Orchid (i actually thought this was a needed item), MKB, Dagon, Radiance, Shiva's, Ginso, Euls, Lothars... All are situation/luxury items.

Dagger i think is unnecessary. He has about 2 ways of escaping as it is, so i would much rather have Euls instead of Dagger. Atleast with Euls you can actually make set ups with it.

Power treads (inteligence)

Lothar's Edge
Refresher Orb (doubles ultimate - 200 damage/s)
*Power treads switch to Strenght

Radiance (+50 damage/s - 250 d/s with ultimate)

The ultimate of this build is able to do +/- (6250 base damage) if you use all rocks and if you use them before the end of the ability (5.00 sec or more)

After some experimentation, I've come up a descent item and skill build for this hero as well as situational combo. I could kill almost anyone on 1on1 (except centaur or any tank heroes late game). I could even always get double kills or triples (sometimes though sacrificing own life). I can roll even to 5 heroes pushing and manage to get kills even when alone.

Skills:
1. get grip first (for stunning, saving yourself or an ally if gank)
2. Rolling Boulder
3. Rolling Boulder (at level 3 u can even manage a kill if you have a good ally)
4. Boulder smash (ward of ganks or save ally or kill escaping heroes with little hp left, takes some practice)
5. Rolling boulder (you should manage a kill by now IF you have boots)
6. Magnetize (you can kill virtually anyone at this stage: guts, confidence, careful placement of stones = double kills)
7. Rolling boulder (anyone in your path = GG)
8. Max grip and Magnetize, then stats (Boulder smash is retained at level 1)

Items:
1. 2 sets of Tango (6 pcs), 1 Healing Salve, 2 pcs gauntlets of ogre str
2. boots
3. sobi mask
4. if you can manage a kill go for Power Treads
5. complete URN (this will cover your healing and mana problems)
<<go kill anyone>>
6. Robe of magi (increase mana pool a bit)
7. Chain mail (+armor helps on ganking)
8. Complete blademail
<<probably you wont get godlike but it is highly possible, just rape them>>
9. Sange (+hp and maim is good)
10. Ghost scepter (useful if there are a lot of enemies, helps you place stones strategically without being hit...casters? go BM)
11. Complete Heavens halberd (kinda contradicts your BM but it really is awesome against hard hitting carries without BKB)
12. Radiance

13. Boots of Travel
14. Ditch Urn ang get Heart of Tarrasque

Combo/Stragey: (situational)

1. Basic: place stone at the back of enemy hero(es), Grip the stone, then Roll, magnetize, then use URN charge to enemy, use Bladmail if it fights = kill. Escaping enemy heroes? place stone to that hero to extend magnetize..place another one ensuring that it will be hit with you rolling to that enemy, whack and place stones in advance = kill.
Grip - Roll -Magnet -Roll

2. Descent: put stone in front of you then roll to enemy, magnetize, urn, blademail, escaping? stone and grip and roll = deads.
Roll - Magnet - Grip - Roll

3. Difficult: put one stone in front, boulder smash the stone (ensure hitting most heroes), then grip THAT stone, then Roll to THAT stone. lol (it takes practice and it can be done). Watch the stone never to go its full distance on boulder smash, grip as soon as it passes the heroes then roll. Then magnetize, Blademail, stones in advance, with radiance everyone should be laying on the ground. (Silenced + Stunned + Slowed + Damage over Time = GG)
Smash - Grip - Roll - Magnet - Roll (depends)

Best ally:
1. any heroes with stun/slow/trap

Worst enemy:
1. Centaur warchief (3rd skill hurts against your magnetize)

Annoyance:
1. Blinks, silence, Invisible (but can be killed)

Note:
1. You don't need crazy mana regen or mana pools since your skills mostly depends on stones to be effective and it takes 25 seconds to restore 1 stone, Rolling boulder at 4 seconds CD can be spammed costing only 50 mana.
2. Force Staff is preferred against Blink dagger (if you ever considering one), because it helps in escaping gank attempts very very well with rolling. You have rolling boulder for initiation so dagger is a waste.
3. For fun games, get treads, urn, dagon 5, shivas guard and HoT. If you can farm these items well then the result is much less the same.
