Default ATTN: German Music, sup.

Because this forum is lacking some quality threads since a while, I'm going to dedicate myself to broadening your understanding of German music other than Rammstein and other "Neue Deutsche Härte" bullcrap circulating here.

Anyway, one band at a time, I'll start with:

Shy Guy At The Show

They are a local band, and put down some of the most epic life shows - mainly because their singer is a pretty awesome dude eh (acts like he's) high on stage and doesn't afraid of anything. They play a sort of synth-heavy Post-Punk (you could also call it New Wave or Gothic I guess), similar to late Joy Division, Interpol, Editors, etc. with an affinity for disco-ish drum beats.

Song off their most recent album, The Birth Of Doubt (I've been at the release party, shit's been pretty awesome). Sound quality isn't too astounding, you can hardly hear the guitar and bass over the synth, so here's a song off their debut album:

You can hear more songs at their website: Releases / MP3 | shy guy at the show

and see some more vids too: Video | shy guy at the show

As for albums, I'm pretty undecided, partly because I only have two, but their 2010 release might just be the AOTY for me. Concept album, with a nicely-created dark atmosphere, pretty good individual songs too, and a fucking big comic packaged in ;3 Well. Their first two albums feature more "soft" songs, and are generally more "playful", from what I heard.

Kinda okey I guess, no greater variation in their songs though.. They all have that.. hmm, like he's-bored-when-he's-singing-it feel to it. But when they're live it doesn't sound like that... I found the album "elliptic" on Spotify so I listened through some of the songs.. and no, I would never be able to listen to these guys, not cause they're bad, cause I didn't think that it sounded bad. But, cause he sounds so bored when he's singing, and I hate that, it's like he's chilling while singing, sitting in his bed listening to some song he knows the lyrics to and just sings along, no real energy while recording..If he's not gonna put any effort into it, why sing at all? But that IS better live, as I said. Btw, I did like the second song you posted up.

Yeah, I too feel like they are pretty unexcited on their first two records. In fact, I long had doubts about going to their release party because of that, but heh, their live show puts their records to shame. Sadly they only have 2 live videos online ;/ Their last album is better in that aspect because most of the songs are so aggressively (?) written that they couldn't lay back much during recording. But eh to be fair, a lot of singers have that "boring on record" feel.

or Edguy, or Brainstorm, or Helloween? Idk, I'm not a fan of either Thrash or Power Metal really. Or metal at all. But I can tell you about German Progressive Rock / Post-Hardcore / Progressive Metal / Metalcore, really I have no fucking idea what to label them:

Dioramic

Apparently these guys are together since quite a few years, but released their debut album just now (January 22). The play very interesting music. At first I feared it'd be more of the same old "randomly disjoint songs" progressive metalcore ala Between The Buried And Me, but so far I'm 4 songs into the album and very positively surprised. I guess the best thing is to just listen to the songs:

DIORAMIC bei MySpace Music - Kostenlos MP3s anhören, Bilder & Musikvideos ansehen

And don't be put off if you don't like what you hear at first: I don't like their deep growls at all, but they have a large variety of "moods" (not sure what to call it). Anyway, just posting about them because Technicolor is whats keeping me awake right now.

next artists will prolly be something pop'ish or mb rap? then again rap is shit if you can't understand the lyrics.

Adding Dioramic to my list (includes previously added After The Burial and Circle Of Contempt) and searching for a blogspot download.

How about bands such as Equilibrium, Caliban, Crematory, Deadlock, In Extremo, Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, Kreator etc.?

German metal has nothing against swedish metal though, but I still enjoy listening to bands like those alot. Not saying that they were bad, it's just that they usually sing their songs in german while swedish dudes sing in english, which helps a lot. Equilibrium is still one of my favourite bands, too bad they have only one album released atm.

EDIT: That "Shy Guy At the Show" didn't really hit me that well. It wasn't really bad per se, just too... "Cosy" for my current mood.

"I'm not a fan of either Thrash or Power Metal really. Or metal at all." Well, I guess I have listened to Die Apokalyptischen Reiter at some point in time, but it's the kind of music I grew out of pretty fast. Crematory, Kreator, Equilibrium I've heard some songs of, but I didn't really like them. In Extremo is ehhhhhh. If you like that kind of medieval-themed music you probably like Schandmaul and Subway To Sally, too.

Actually there is (or at least there used to be) a rather big scene for that kind of music in Germany.

Deadlock and Caliban are okay bands. I have some emotional ties to Caliban since The Undying Darkness was my first metalcore album and the band is, imo, one of the better bands the genre has too offer. They are also incredible live, although I only had the chance to see them once (with Soilwork, Dark Tranquility and Sonic Syndicate).

Pretty much my favorite, and damn nice live song too (maximum crowd interaction <3). Their newer stuff is decent from what I heard, and so is their older stuff (albums Opposite From Within, Shadow Hearts):

That song is from a 2000 split with Heaven Shall Burn, another German metalcore / melodic death metal band. Though I'm not a fan of their production at all, they have some okay songs and a nice attitude:

Another German band you should check out is Fear My Thoughts (melodic death metal). I think they are rather unknown, sadly:

There used to be a really good metalcore band from somewhere close to me, but they broke up a few years ago. They had their album up for download on their website some time, but I think their site got taken down. I'll see if I can up it, if anyone's interested.
