EXPANSION GUIDE
Written by EebstertheGreat

The following is an advanced expansion guide written by EebstertheGreat. This was edited by me to fit into this guide for further reading. It discusses Warcraft III's abilities, buffs, damage types, attack types, and armor types. With this knowledge, you will come to a full understanding of everything regarding damage in DotA. It is a long read though, so let's begin!

In Warcraft III, there are three general "types" of abilities, buffs, and damage which determine when they are blocked or removed. These are "physical" or "normal," "magical," and "universal." There are two "states" which can potentially block or remove these: "ethereal" and "magic immune." Additionally, units can be "invulnerable," in which case they are immune to everything, except that invulnerable summons can be damaged by Purge.

And you've reached the end of the expansion. I wish to thank EebstertheGreat for his help in writing this guide. Do come visit this guide again whenever you need reference.

Default Re: Every Hero's Skill and Damage Type

  • March 28, 2010 - Started the guide, added Sentinel Strength.
  • March 29, 2010 - Reworked format, added Sentinel Agility, added Sentinel Intelligence, added Neutral Strength.
  • March 30, 2010 - Made some corrections, added Neutral Agility, added Neutral Intelligence, removed all damage-increasing spells from the Physical category.
  • April 4, 2010 - After some problems concerning my internet loss, I've decided to remove all skill icons to reduce loading time for slower computers (like mine), to keep it organized and simple, and lastly to fit in all taverns in one post (due to a 400 image limit), added little note thingies that reduce space by displaying the damage type on highlight.
  • May 9, 2010 - Added Scourge Agility.
  • May 10, 2010 - Added Scourge Intelligence, guide completed.
  • July 7, 2010 - Changed URL of the images to media.playdota.com, added Ancient Apparition and Murloc Nightcrawler in the taverns, and finished all anchors. All these were done by Lordshinjo, so credits go to him.
  • August 30, 2010 - Added Guardian Wisp, Gyrocopter, Far Seer and Shadow Demon, their anchors and icons, and made a few corrections regarding skills that do not actually deal damage when cast (such as Plague Ward and Mass Serpent Ward). One major change includes the changing of the color Yellow to #FFFF99, Blue to #3399CC, and Green to #33CC33 to make it easier on the eyes.
  • October 29, 2010 - Finished up to 6.69b. Waiting for more DotA updates. Went over the guide again and edited skills who don't actually deal damage and restated them. Restated skills that spawn sub-skills, might have missed a few (e.g., Morph).
  • November 28, 2010 - Changed some minor formatting stuff, made some corrections stated by readers, added a link to a magic immunity guide.
  • December 30, 2010 - Updated to 6.70c. New tavern layouts in the game are not reflected yet. The two new Heroes, namely Ymir and Icarus, are categorized as Neutral Strength Heroes as they appear in the Hero pages currently.
  • January 23, 2011 - Updated to 6.71.
  • May 3, 2011 - Updated fully to 6.72.
  • May 5, 2011 - New tavern layout now reflected. Updated to 6.72b.
  • July 21, 2011 - Updated to 6.72e.
  • October 6, 2011 - Updated to 6.72f and made some corrections.
  • December 27, 2011 - Updated to 6.73.
  • January 11, 2012 - Updated to 6.73b and corrected the tavern placing.
  • April 21, 2012 - Updated to 6.74c and added a few more to the Direct HP Removal list.
  • April 22, 2012 - Added expansion guide by EebstertheGreat. See the bottom of the guide.
  • June 16, 2012 - Made some corrections to Invoker as of 6.74c.
  • October 23, 2012 - Updated to 6.76b.
  • November 2, 2012 - Made corrections to Eeebster's guide as requested. Updated to 6.76c.

It will take quite a long time to finish, though. Will update later, it's already 1AM.

I need icons for the new skills such as Sentinel or The Swarm in 6.67b. Also, new icons for Admiral's skills, etc. Plus, confirm some of the outdated skills in the guide such as new Shrapnel and some new Heroes like Slark and Kaldr.

You should add a new category, which is 'Direct HP Removal'.

It may seem similiar to 'Pure', as both aren't reduced, but 'Direct HP Removal' (as Heartstopper, Fatal Bonds, Armlet, etc.) is not counted as damage.

There are certain spells that doesn't follow the rules in the table, you can deal with them later though.

You don't have to include Universal and Enhanced in the table, you should put a note to associated spells.

edit: Forgot to say, good luck with the rest of the guide.

Good job on updating this guide. However the Font you are using makes it hard to tell if a skill is in italic to not.

Here are some corrections to the current mistakes:

Earthshaker
Echo Slam deals damage to Magic Immune units.

TC
Natural Order will affect Magic Immune units. Though I do not know how the rest of the skills are triggered, you should ask the other mech people if Stomp's and Earth Splitter's physical portion will damage Magic Immune units or not.

Brewmaster
Storm Panda's Windwalk will damage Magic Immune units.

If you have time, can you go into more detail than Danat's guide like the other mech people are asking? If you are willing I can give you suggestions to easily get into more detail without changing the format too much.

@Phthalocyanine:
You forgot to put the poison skills in your Enhanced category. Poison skills meaning Poison Sting, Corrosive Breath, Poison attack, Corrosive skin, and Envenomed Weapon.

Also does toss still have DT: Demolish or has it been changed to Fire?

Default Re: Every Hero's Skill and Damage Type

Oh, I forgot poison. Adding it to my post.

Tauren's skills physical parts damage Magic Immune units.

Toss uses DT: Fire.

@Melderv
I don't link to Danat's guide because it simply puts HP Removal, Enhanced under Pure etc. If you don't change the system, yours won't be any better, except being up to date. I ask you to change the template by removing Affects Magic Immune notations, as they can be understood by looking at the table I gave you. And it also shows ethereal interactions. And you can also put a link to my article on magic immunity here for completeness if you want.

Other than that, you can use [nqb] code instead of [quote] so there won't be a Quote: notation.

Putting all skill icons is kind of overkill in my opinion, but it may be just me.

Then why Tinker's HSM don't hit ethereal units?

He doesn't need to change the formatting much. Just rename the Magical damage to Spell damage then add 3 categories into the Pure section so something like Pure¹ (Magical), Pure² (Enhanced) and Pure³ (HP removal) with the surscript following the skill in question like Heartstopper Aura³.

That's a question for Blizzard, as they are the ones who made Fan of Knives based spells doesn't affect Ethereal units.

Well then, I'm gonna hijack a Blizzard boy and ask him in advance.
TC's Earth Splitter- Shouldn't it be mixed, if it has 50-50 dmg type then?

@Phthalocyanine:
What do you mean magic damage is more common? "Magic damage" is more commonly used to describe AT: Spells and DT: Magic but that doesn't mean that it is accurate. By changing it to be Spell damage, people who look at this guide will know at least question why it is not called magic damage and slowly understand the differance between the 2.

@l0r4k:
For ladder balance reasons, FoK skills cannot affect Ethereal units. But this can easily be changed in the game constants of the map like the change to allow AT: Hero and DT: Fire skills to damage Ethereal units.

I don't see any Gameplay Constant about Fan of Knives affecting Ethereal units.

Eh? I guess I was wrong. Are there constants for Blade Fury or Fan Of Knive at all? I remember seeing them but I might be mistaken.

Wild Axes are physical damage afaik

and shouldnt Earthsplitter be "Mixed" since it is 50/50 physical-magical? Even if the definitions are different, having a 200 Mixed nuke or a 100 physical and a 100 magical nuke are pretty much the very same thing except of the damage "instances", which should only affect Lanaya's refraction and Void's backtrack iirc.

You should mention something about cleave damage, as its not the same as pure damage even though they both have similair properties.

The main differences are that cleave damage can effect a magic immune unit where as pure damage can't, cleave damage can't effect etheral units, and cleave damage is only reduced by armour types not armour values.

Hey, guys.

Yes, I'd have to agree if I'm just copying then it wouldn't be any better. I'd also like to make it more specific.

So, here are some changes I will make that I think I picked up from you guys:
  • Will add a different section for Direct HP removal.
  • Add superscript notes to associated Universal and Enhanced spells.

@Clogon: I'm not using any other font besides the default forum font. Would like to use Century Gothic though.

Thanks for the help guys; I will correct those I have made mistakes with but please confirm them.

EDIT: I have finished updating it to a new format. It will concern everything without confusion with new colors and I have removed every italicization and underline because it can be explained through the table. HP Removal, Universal and Enhanced are new categories.

BUT, I will need help in confirming these for the skills. I am still updating through the old guide, and will need information that is current.

The only issue here is that I cannot tell whether a skill with no damage can work on a magic immune unit (such as Replicate). But anyway, that's not the real purpose of the guide.
