Default [ANIMATION] Acid Spray


EDIT 160810: Attached a custom model with which to replace the current model with. Read the post for more details.

Introduction

The current Acid Spray has the Alchemist shake his butt to... telekinetically create a poisonous fume at the targeted area. Ironically, while its name is called Acid Spray, there's none of that spraying coming out of the Alchemist at all.

Moreover, units poisoned by the spell look like they're under the effect of an aura (note the little blue glow below! That's the buff effect).



What I suggest are be two simple fixes.

1) Spraying Acid



Here, you have a stream of acid coming forth from the Alchemist, achieved by creating a dummy unit on the Alchemist that casts a ladder Healing Spray spell with no targets.

Details:
  • The dummy unit flies at a height of 35 with a Projectile Z
    Launch attribute of 60 (i.e. the missile flies at 95 height).
  • The dummy moves along with the caster for the duration of the spray effect (1 second), so it constantly looks like acid is coming out from the Alchemist regardless of whether you cancel the spell (credits to linkyaw).
  • Model used: Abilities\Spells\NightElf\CorrosiveBreath\Corrosiv eBreathMissile.mdl
  • Dummy Healing Spray stats: 8 missile counts, 1 wave count,
    1 damage interval, 250 AoE, 0.1 missile arc and 7000 missile
    speed.
  • Replace the current imported model for the acid cloud with this one. It's basically the same model, except that it takes a second before it starts fading in (about the same time as the projectiles hit the target area). This does not cause any delay in spell effects--it is purely cosmetic!
While not really necessary, for the best effect, rebase Acid Spray on Channel and let it have a follow-through time of 1.3 seconds (with the same cast point! so it can be cancelled any time). This makes it so that the Alchemist will channel for the full duration of the spray effect if the player doesn't do anything afterwards.

2) Buff Effect

Ew, just replace that awkward aura glow with a poison effect already.



The path of the buff effect model is Abilities\Spells\Other\AcidBomb\BottleImpact.mdl.

This buff effect is used for the Alchemist in Ladder too, for a skill called Acid Bomb, so its perfectly crafted for the Alchemist. The only other instance that this buff is used seems to be in Sand King's Caustic Finale, and its hardly noticable there (lasts 0.5 seconds). So this buff is substantially "free".

T-Up.

Maybe make the spray animation not stop when you animation cancel (as in the Hero model does whatever you commanded him to do, but the spray is still coming out), since it's the little goblin that's spraying after all, not the ogre (that moves/attacks). I guess maybe this will mess stuff up if Alchemist changes directions or dies or something...

This would be really good. Sounds hard to code though...

T-Up, great visual as always. However the sound of the projectile is irritating after awhile, perhaps it could be muted

I really don't care about the Spray part, so I'm neutral to this, but I agree, that it needs a new buff. On the other hand, the suggested buff effect is overused and looks, well, more poisonous than corrosive... Try out the Corrosive Breath target buff, the animation won't show in the editor somehow, but it looks really nice and fits to the color of Acid Spray.

This is a great idea. I actually just tried it out in the World Editor, and it looks AMAZING shooting out of the Alchemist as he walks. You guys should check it out. I've updated my post to reflect this. Thanks linkyaw!

The current poison buff is actually only used on Gnoll Assassin (NC), Shadow Priest and mostly Viper. Shadow Priest's is very subtle, and the Gnoll Assassin's is subtle too. So you only really have Viper there using it. But you've brought up an important point with which I agree very much with: it is poisonous, not acidic.

I've tried out your corrosive breath buff, but it looks a little unnatural to have so much fluid effects splashing around (Acid Spray looks a little gassy). I think Ladder Acid Bomb's effect is better because its almost exactly the same as the skill's main effect visually. The effect is shared with the Sand King's Caustic Finale, although that is hardly noticable because it lasts only 0.5 second and nobody really notices that (which makes it easily replaceable too; it doesn't fit the gas explosion of the skill).

Thanks for bringing the misftting nature of the poison effect to my attention though. It only stood out to me after you mentioned it.

The sound cannot be muted. Realise though, that you are going to be casting the skill alot less in a real game compared to when you're testing it, due to its long cooldown and manacost.

Moreover, the sound is rather soft, so in a skirmish where stuns and disables are going off, you aren't going to notice much of it as you spray it and prepare to throw your concoction.

The poison Buff is used by most poison based spells: Viper's Corrosive Skin and Poison Attack, Venomancer's Poison Sting, Dazzle's Poison Touch, Quill Beast's Poison, Gnoll Assassin's Poison, ...
Anyway, are you sure you tried out the model I was talking about? The model hasn't that much fluid effects.

The spray effect is absolutely perfect!

Additionally, to anyone that hasn't the test map in the link is worth seeing just for the Grow! effect on Tiny as it is amazingly awesome!
