Monk classes are a tricky thing in online RPGs, specially if you go down the D&D route - no armor and almost no weapon types. I like the idea too, but I just cry when I see everyone else in shinning armor and badass weapons and look at me going around half naked. At least in D3 you can pick male/female chars, so a half naked female cant be that bad.
Anyway, as long as hammerdins dont make a comeback Im fine, even though some sort of "saint" class will eventually be in the game.
I doubt D3 would suffer from the trappings of traditional Monk character, it's not like non-melee combat classes can't put on plate armor if they want in D2.
Obviously skills would factor into the character design, they may not have the innate str to wear the heaviest armor but their skills should compensate (increased dodge, staff blocking for e.g.)
And D2 was designed so that Elite armors to have similar defense stats to encourage a wide adoption of looks, personally light-medium armor looks the best to me (paladin looks like shit tbh) on most characters and they also drain stamina less. But Stamina probably won't even be a consideration in D3, it's another dumb mechanic just like keys. My hero should be able to run all the time damn time whenever he/she wants.
