Default The Mana

I got this idea earlier today, and couldn't get it out of my head, so I decided to write it down and post it here.

Prologue

'Finish it!' he said, grasping my hand in his. And then, he was gone.

I stood up, looking sadly at the body of my friend. He had sacrificed his life for our cause, and now I had to finish what had been begun so long before.

A rustling sound filled the air, and I looked up to see dozens of rangers appear out of the forest, sprinting towards me. I did not have long. Raising my hand, I focused my energy, allowing the ancient powers to flow through me. The rangers stopped, realising their danger, and began to run in the opposite direction, trying to put as much distance between me and them as possible.

I smiled, before releasing the sphere of power that had been building up in my hand. The trees shook as it exploded, as a growing wave of energy painted the forest a deep red.

Satisfied with the result, I turned to my destination, my mind filled with resolve. Before me lay the Great Shrine, where I would be able to finish this. Breaking into a run, I closed the distance, hoping against hope that nothing would be there to stop me.

As I stepped through the great arch, my mind was filled with a thousand whispers, echos of the mana that had been channeled here. For this was the very birthplace of the universe, where the great energy had come into existence. Anything that happened here would affect everything, in every time.

Striding forward, I approached my target, scanning the building for enemies as I did so. Directly in front of me was the Mana Stone, the object that had given birth to everything magical. As I reached out my hand, it began to glow, sending out a blue glow. Steeling myself, I touched my hand to the stone.

The effect was instantaneous; the entire world seemed to distort and shift, as I felt the familiar feeling of teleportation overcome me. I let the magic pull me, guiding me to the heart of the stone.

As suddenly as it had begun, the spell stopped, throwing me onto a hard floor. Getting to my feet, I saw before me The Mana. Not any one persons mana, nor the collective mana of this world, but the mana of the universe. The force that sustained everything, the guiding hand of life. For while we were all created by Life, it was Mana that shaped us.

Reaching out, I plunged my hand into The Mana, preparing for the final task. Billions, no, trillions of voices filled by head, as I felt the minds of every one of them. I hardened my mind, putting up defenses as I had been trained to do, before reaching further into The Mana. I felt the very building blocks of life before me, all of creation like clay in my hands. But I had come for one reason, and one reason only.

I narrowed my field of vision, finding the one specific thing that I had come for. I reached out with my mind, changing one thing, then pulled my hand back, grinning as I did so.

Before me, The Mana changed from a deep blue to a blood red, as the taint of what I had done spread across all of time and space.

And then, everything changed.

Chapter 1

Goodbye Universe

3010 A.D.

Planet 0, the first planet ever formed. The birthplace of life. And Mana. And it was on Planet 0 that the Mana Stone resided, the very thing that shaped and guided life. Without it the universe would crumble. Kept under 24 hour surveillance, and surrounded by 3 of the 5 elite fleets of the Human Empire, nothing could ever threaten it.

Or so it was thought.

It was never discovered exactly what happened, but it was discovered how. In one instant, the planet was as it had always been, protected as it had always been. And the next it was gone, as was all three fleets. While their disappearance was detected instantly, the depression in the time/space continuum was not felt until much later. It was not until the second drone sent to investigate went missing that the Galactic Human Empire decided that a human would have to be sent to investigate.

What was discovered shocked those who knew of it to the core. Where Planet 0's solar system had stood, there now existed a huge black hole. Every scan and probe brought back the same results: Planet 0 was gone.

Those in High Command with knowledge of the arcane knew what this meant. Without the Mana Stone to guide it, Life would not be applied in the right places, and everything would die. Without Planet 0, the universe as it was know would cease to exist

Something would have to be done.

So far, the only Warcraft related story I can see coming from this is based on the Well of Eternity.
Only the continuation will prove me wrong, so will await for an update.

Hey, thanks for all the comments.

@AvA: Yeah, next couple of chapters will stray even further away from WC, but then it will come together.
@Ka.25: It's a *whispers*suprise.
@.Buko: Still planning out the story, expect an update this week though.

Not a long chapter, just something to tide you over. Hope you enjoy!

Thanks. I entered ELWB 1 and 2 (As well as the most recent one), so look at those contests if you want to see some other one shots I've done. I also wrote a piece called "Sceptre of Power", try looking for that.

Hope that helped.
