Default Damage Cap


What are the damage cap of these spells?
  • [1]Shockwave (magnus)
    [2]Dragon slave
    [3]Carrion swarm
    [4]Sonic Wave
    [5]Breath of Fire
    [6]Scream of Pain
    [7]Illuminate (I am assuming it is shockwave based)
    [8]Other skills i might have missed?

Okay so I know (or at least I think I know) that Shockwave, Carrion Swarm and Fan of Knives based spells have damage caps but aside from these spells what other spells have damage caps?

and

9. What will happen if for example Scream of PainDragon Slave reaches its damage cap---- will it deal 300 damage to a limited # of targets or less than 300 damage to all targets?

scream was recoded and doesn't have a damage cap.

The only spells with a damage cap lower than 99999 are Dragon Slave and Sonic Wave.
Dragon Slave's cap is 900/1560/2400/2400.
Sonic Wave's cap is 9000 (at all levels, for both improved and normal version)

When a carrion swarm/shockwave/breath of fire/breath of frost-based spell reaches its damage cap, it will deal full damage to the first units, less damage at some point, and no damage after this point.
The mechanics of this repartition aren't entirely known, but it basically checks by circle sections as the projectile travels forward, and when the damage cap is reached in a section, the damage is shared equally between every unit in this section.

Neither breath of fire's dot (unused in dota) nor breath of frost's dot (used in dual breath) are affected by the damage cap.

A thought that came in my head:
What if I get both Pandaren Brewmaster and Dragon Knight in a game.Does BoF even have a value set for it's DoT?If yes, how much for how long?

Edit:
Silly me..I tested in single player, Dragon's Breath has no DoT.

how these damage cap are useful?
For example Dragon's slave lvl is 2400 ok what does it mean?
because you can not reach that am I right?

You can, if you hit multiple units.

aha I get it. it means if Dragon slave hit a group can not do more than 2400 to all? right?
before reduction you mean?

Oh right, I forgot to say that it's after most reductions.

Meaning that a unit with 10HP left will only account for 10 damage against the cap, and a Hero with some spell resistance and stuff will only account for the damage he really took.

(though any triggered heals should occur only afterwards)

may i ask is there any particular reason as to why DSlave and SWave have less damage cap than others? It is really lame since sonic wave is an ultimate

Balance reasons.In most cases Sonic Wave kills enemy creeps, and if it's cap was 999999, Akasha would be able to stop every push, no matter how many creeps are present.

Hmmm since the nearest unit take the full damage, how does the other unit take the damage?

So based on lordshinjo's explaination, for the formation below, assuming the damage cap will be reached by the second row. The first unit would take full damage, the second takes 1/3 damage each, and the final round takes 0 damage despite being covered in aoe?

illuminate doesn't have a damage cap as far as i am aware, though i could be wrong, before kotl was remade to the current one the cap was like 10,000 or something crazy
