Default [PROJECT] Skill Tooltip Overhaul

Skill Tooltip Overhaul
Original idea by Quiesce.
Project maintained by Melderv.

You are in the project thread for the brilliant and inevitable idea of Quiesce. Simply, the project aims to make all skill tooltips both informative and consistent. I don't want to repeat much of what has already been said, so please go here to see the original idea: [COSMETIC] Skill Tooltips.

Contributors must follow the template posted here to make it easier for the developer to copy-paste into the World Editor. One must follow the guidelines stated below.

Damage type will also be included. Note that it's usually Magical, but please do refer to my Advanced Mechanics guide about damage type here if you don't know it already: Every Hero's Skill and Damage Type (6.71b).

Contributors will be given full credit for this project. All contributions will be posted in the second post. Speak up on what category, even the specific Hero, you're doing so two people won't focus on one thing at the same time.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
  • Include the damage type in the Effects portion.
  • Do not include magic immunity details.
  • Do not forget all sub-skills, Passive or Active.
  • Do not encase in spoilers, post as is.
  • Follow this format:
    1. Effect on allies and self (effects before damage/heal, if any).
    2. Additional effect on enemies (stunning enemies for..., slowing movement/attack speeds by..., silencing enemies for... etc.).
    3. Damage on enemies (dealing X damage...).
    4. Duration (Lasts for X seconds.).
    5. Damage type.

GUIDELINES

SKILL

Given the Skill Name and its level, the following is written after:
  1. Skill Description must contain no numbers. This is where the literature comes in. Try to make it as simple as possible but still equally interesting. For example, Invoker builds up a charge of electromagnetic energy at a targeted location which automatically detonates and burns mana dependent on Wex.
  2. Effects will detail the skill's effects here, using numbers particular to that level. Damage type is present in all skills. If the skill itself doesn't deal damage upon casting, such as Plague Ward, remove this part. Refer to my guide for the proper damage type for each skill. For example, Burns 400 mana and removes half the burnt mana from the affected unit's hitpoints. Direct HP Removal.
  3. Casting Details will detail the skill's AoE, casting range, and targeting type (unit, Hero, point, AoE) in this order. If it has no targeting type, it is because the skill is Instant, so put that. For example, 700 AoE, 600 casting range, Point-targeting (if it is Instant, write it).
  4. Cooldown is written in seconds. However, don't add numbers here! They will be entered independently.
  5. Orb Effect and Buff Placer are details of some skills. Remove them if they don't apply. For example, Orb Effects do not stack.
  6. Channeling skill is a feature of some skills. Just leave the word as it is if the skill uses this feature, or remove it if it doesn't.
  7. Scepter Upgradeable applies only for Ultimates. If the Ultimate can be upgraded by Aghanim's Scepter, include this. For example, Scepter Upgradeable: Improves the skill's...

LEVEL UP SCREEN
  1. Effects vary depending on level. Include only those that change. Don't include the damage type anymore. For example, 100/200/300/400 damage, 1/2/3/4 second stun.
  2. Casting Details vary depending on level. Include only those that change. For example, 300/450/600/750 AoE.
  3. Manacost varies depending on level. Include only if it changes. For example, 100/150/200/250 mana.
  4. Cooldown varies depending on level. Include only if it changes. For example, 14/13/12/11 seconds.
  8. Ignore any part of the skill that doesn't need it. For example, Passive skills may not need cooldown, or the skill's AoE does not variate.

There have been some changes. I thought Channeling should be as is. I wanted to include damage type as well, and I don't think it's too daunting. Most players I know only know Physical and Magical, and they use it for all skills, which shouldn't be the case.

I changed the order of Casting Details, plus used the proper terms such as unit, Hero, point, AoE.

What about spells that deal Pure damage. Where will we put "Deals pure damage"?

Um, yes. It's a damage type, after all. Physical, Magical, Mixed, Pure, Enhanced, and Universal are all damage types. Refer to my guide.

Is it necessary to put what kind of damage the skills deal into the tooltip?

You don't want to mislead the people by saying Impetus deals magic damage, amirite?

Yea, you kinda need the damage type.

It goes like this:

Ball Lightning - Level x

Storm Spirit is enveloped with energy, becoming invulnerable and traveling in a ball of electricity.

Effects: blah blah, numbers, blah blah, damage type here.

Casting Details: Global, point-target

I really would like to keep it to two sections.

we could make use of different colours to note the type of damage they deal... this makes sure we don't use a lot of "unneeded" text

@Kiana: Well, I'm not sure who's even eager to help. For now you can just contribute all you like, so it's a FFA.

I will edit the post to show the more compact version, including damage type in the effects portion. For Lycan's suggestion, that would be good, but what should be the standard color for each damage type? If you are willing to use the ones in my guide, that should be ok.

I'll help out with this. I think it's important to divide labour up first though, as we don't want 10 people all to do one skill or something like that.

^True. Perhaps we could go with a reserving system. I could reserve Warlock, so people know not to write anything for him (I'm not actually reserving him).
