Default [Model] AA Mapspace reduction/teamcolor


Hey ladies and gentlemen,

when checking through DotA's files the other day I saw that the AA model requires a huge ton of mapspace.
It does not need to do that, though.

Compression:



You can try to find out which one is the original, everyone I asked had invalid reasons for their decision and most people were wrong.

The right one is the original, the left one has been compressed.

So here's what I did:
His upper arms use an animated material, meaning they change the texture every 166 milliseconds, cycling through 6 textures:
Units\Orc\IcyGhost\BlueWaves001.blp
Units\Orc\IcyGhost\BlueWaves002.blp
Units\Orc\IcyGhost\BlueWaves003.blp
Units\Orc\IcyGhost\BlueWaves004.blp
Units\Orc\IcyGhost\BlueWaves005.blp
Units\Orc\IcyGhost\BlueWaves006.blp

Each of these is slightly different to the others. However, the difference is so small that you won't notice it ingame. So I removed them all and replaced them with an ingame texture that equals Units\Orc\IcyGhost\BlueWaves001.blp. This texture is Textures\BlueWaves.blp.
The 6 textures took about 30kb, now we're down to 0.

The hands have an own texture (Units\Orc\IcyGhost\hand.blp), but it is really nothing special, so I decided to replace it with a roughly comparable texture. I ended up using Textures\Ice3b.blp in the end, which fits very well to the model in my opinion.
From 5817 bytes down to zero.

The main texture is Units\Orc\IcyGhost\ice.blp.
I compressed it a bit, the old compression was not exactly strong.
From 53kb to 37kb.

I also compressed the model itself, of course. Without any visible loss of quality, it went down from 48kb to 33kb.

Team Color

He got almost nothing now, only the attached sphere FX.
It is a kinda difficult point. The best way, in my opinion, is simply adding a teamcolored particle emitter:



If you do not like it, I also tried some alternatives back when we first implemented AA into DotA. I did not take a lot of time making these and was very sloppy, if we were to implement them I'd remake them.




And now the rest of the compression stuff:

And that's the suggestion, AA taking 70kb:



Problem, 8MB limit?

Dislike any of the compression? What do you think about team color?
Got more ideas about what to add? I'm thankful for any feedback.

Could simply use the original hand texture, would then take 5817 bytes more.

No, I like it when AA takes up the map space, it makes him stronger

On a serious note, I don't like any of those team colors, they look kinda wrong
I think for AA, a simple glow under his feet would be enough
Or, is it possible to make the spheres larger and team colored?

Replacing AA model with existing one will save even more space, but of course IF will not do it. :/

Good job, but team color seems unnecessary.

Of course, a MSI reducen is awesome. As for the team color, I like the version with the colored runic stuff on the shoulder pads. While this stuff here is all great and of course way better than current one, I'd still prefer an ingame model, but I think that's just me.
