Item Creation Contest VII


CURRENT PHASE: 5
Finshed

STATUS (All Dates are based on GMT +8:00)

Phase 1: (July 17 - August 7) Registration phase. Judge and contestant registration is opened. Contestants may also begin their entries.

Phase 2: (August 8 - August 22) Editing phase. Registration is closed although judges may still enter. Entrants are still allowed to edit their entries.

Phase 3: (August 23 - September 5) Voting phase. You must vote for your top 3 items in terms of rank. The top 8 items will move to the next phase and be judged. Each judge may select a single entry that has not been selected as a wildcard. One of those entries will join the other contestants on the next phase. Judge registration is closed.
If contestants edit their entries during this phase points will be deduced.

Phase 4: (September 6 - September 20) Judging phase. All 9 entries will be judged based on the rubric.
If contestants edit their entries during this phase points will be deduced.

Phase 5: (September 20 Onwards) Contest is over, results are published.


Results



Rules
Contestants Must:
Contestants who want to participate will have to send a request via PM to the host. In their PM, they have to send the link to their entry.

AND

All contestants have to fulfill the main challenge completely. Otherwise, they either won't be added.

AND

Contestants cannot vote for themselves or ask other people to vote for them.
Violating these rules results in disqualification
Judges Must:
Send a PM to the host, stating that they want to become a judge.

AND

Have at least 200 posts in suggestion forum.

AND

Have a positive judging history.



Challenge
MAIN CHALLENGE:
Create an item that would be a core item on a chosen hero.
If you disregard the main challenge or the item has direct upgrades to spells (ie, like Aghanim's Scepter), you'll be disqualified.

Core items are items that would support a hero to it's full extent and synergize with all of his abilities. There must be an explanation to all of the abilities.


Optional Challenge 1:
Your item must thematically suit the hero of choice.
Up to 5 Points for Complying

Optional Challenge 2:
Your item must pay homage to any Final Fantasy game.
Up to 5 Points for Complying

Big Bonus Opportunity:
You may pick from the pools of heroes below. Two heroes from the DotA Hero Pool and four from the PD Hero Pool give bonus points while the rest cause deductions.
+15 Points for a successful pick.
-15 Points for a unsuccessful pick.

How the item improves the hero's role & How the item improves the hero's spells
Traveler's Reward gains charges per distance traveled. Poof, is a great way to travel long distances.
The ability to pin down an enemy greatly helps in preventing the target from undoing the health and mana loss dealt by Traveler's Reward.
Summoner's Aura provides his clones greater survivability.
How the item is thematically fitting"Dirty Scarf", dirt as in earth. Also has references linking to Geomancer's background story. Matching color theme.

Summoner's Aura
  • This aura affects ANY and ALL units owned by the player. This includes summons, illusions, wards, and others of the like.
  • The spell resistance is an AURA, even the +15% the wearer gets. This means this will stack with resistance provided by items like Planeswalker's Cloak.
  • This aura will NOT stack with itself. Getting more than 1 will not double it's effects.
  • However, on the occasion that a player has 2 or more units that can each hold a Dirty Scarf, like with Syllaber or at single player test mode, and that each does have a Dirty Scarf, both units will have +30% resistance rather than just +15%. Still does not stack but gets the effect with higher numbers, like evasion.

Traveler's Reward
  • Steals 225 health and 225 mana with 15 charges.
  • 'Damage' dealt is hp removal. Is not reduced by magic resistance or armor but is non-lethal.
  • However, if the target moves, the health and mana the target stolen because of Traveler's Reward is returned. Like Rupture and Mana Leak only reversed.
  • The amount of health and mana loss undone has a cap of 75 per 0.5 seconds. This is to reduce it's weakness against heroes with teleport abilities. It is to be noted that this aspect only reduces said weakness but does not completely negate it. Traveler's Reward is still semi-counterable by teleport abilities.

I picked storm but it can be core on any hero that tends to waste a lot of mana, or used as a counter to heroes that waste your mana.

IMO, My item pays homage to Final Fantasy 5. One of my favourite FF games, I played this one ages ago, but considering how long these games are, I sadly never finished it. I still plan to one day.
Anyway, in FFV, your main party had to collect a series of crystal shards to ultimately seal away the main antagonist of the game, and for each crystal shard collected, classes were unlocked for the characters to change to. This class system is one of the main aspects of the game that makes it my favourite of the series.
This item represents a portion of those crystal shards, and the classes represented by them.
I have also altered some of the classes used to fit DotA more:
- Berserker in the game can only auto-attack, so I'll change that since that would be boring in DotA)
- There are multiple types of mages, but for the sake of simplicity, I'll leave them as one.

Also name a few summons that really need magic immunity, except meepo's clones and syla's bear, who are the usual targets of nukes? WTF does a illusion that takes 400% damage benefit from 30% immunity?

It's not really helpful for ward, since they can't be targeted by spells anyway HOWEVER, illusion and summoning heroes will benefit from this. "WTF does a illusion that takes 400% damage benefit from 30% immunity?" The most widely accepted counter to illusions are AoE nukes.

If a hero's illusion has 1000hp and is nuked with Carrion Swarm(300 dmg),
  • With out Dirty Scarf; 1000 - (300 * .75 * 4)= 100 hp left.
  • With Dirty Scarf; 1000 - (300 * .75 * .7 * 4)= 370 hp left.
Yes, a 270 hp difference is not much to look at, however, it is significant. No, it's not a great way to buff your illusions, but it is a decent way to do so.

As for other summons that could use magic resistance?
  • Eidolons
  • Spiderlings
  • Spiderites(to a lesser extent, only against low damage nukes)
  • Infernal
  • Chen's converted creeps
  • Enchantress' converted creeps
  • Dominated Creeps(HotD)
  • Pandaren's Primal Split.(Storm Earth and Fire)

Also, The spell resistance is an AURA, even the +15% the wearer gets, this means this will stack with resistance provided by items like Planeswalker's Cloak.

HERO CHOSEN: Abaddon, Lord of Avernus

HOW THE ITEM IMPROVES THE HERO'S ROLE: Well, the item is good for any hero that tanks. Abaddon does get a lot of attention because of his supportive role and this item helps him deal with all that attention. Not to mention it greatly improves his damage output, giving him the chance to semi-carry.

HOW THE ITEM IMPROVES THE HERO'S SPELLS: If you use Masochism before casting Death Coil, you'll get healed instead of damaged, which can be done with Borrowed Life also but this helps you use it as a much more constant healing/nuking tool. The item also makes your ultimate last a little longer and also turns any amount of healing into bonus damage, and Abaddon will heal a lot of HP with his ultimate almost all time.

HOW THE ITEM IS THEMATICALLY FITTING: Well, it's the crown of a Death Knight, and Abaddon is a Death Knight. It also goes well with his masochistic theme (he is good at recieving damage, he even self-inflicts damage LOL)

HOW THE ITEM PAYS HOMAGE TO FINAL FANTASY: There's a Death Knight class in FF Tactics: The War of the Lions. It is good at absorbing HP from his enemies. This pays a homage to that class, the HP absrobing attack can be seen in this link, under the Shadowblade name, also the Defend abbility is in someway similar to my Masochism abbility.
