That could be said about a lot of the fun names. I have seen people confused about who Gandalf is.

I think the difference here lies in the fact that meepok is unknown y the vast majority, and not very relevant or clever, whereas gandalf is from a similar fantasy genre as warcraft. gandalf is prominent in pop culture.

this could be just my interpretation, but isn't the idea that most people would get the reference? that's why i went for things like movies most people have seen (disney classics) or things like historical figures that are pretty much in every textbook. the idea of pop culture is that it is common among the culture. if its well known and comical in singapore, than it can be introduced in the singapore(what language?) version of dota.. not necessarily in the general dota.

Look at Puck's fun name. Some names are a little bit harder to figure out.

IceFrog's blog: It is roughly estimated (based on the statistics from popular Chinese sites) that the Chinese DotA audience is about 40-50% of the worldwide audience.

I'm sure most of the Chinese audience will know what mee pok is. Moreover, because mee pok has become a prominent part of Southeast Asian cuisine (most prominently Singapore and Malaysia), you can be sure that the reference will also be understood by the other races of those regions.

So, my guess is over 60% of all DotA players, are from Asia.

Ur argument is invalid.

Fully disagree with you.

Which means that there are 50% or maybe more that don't know what meepok is and they will not get the joke, which is important. And I'm asking outside Asia, not inside, geez.

You want a proof? Ask in every single game all the players what meepok is and see how many knows that. And you are outside Asia, infact in Europe, same as me. -_- So, like the other guy said, there must be reference to something familiar to see the connection and therefore to understand the joke.

I'm talking about the other players that are non-asian. -_-
