I'm not an expert but you could buy a much better ram for a really low price which could solve some of your issue.

vertical sync, resolution, shadows, and anti-aliasing are one of the most resource-consuming things in the game atm, disable/downgrade them.
if you already did that, try asking on the dev forums, perhaps there is a console command that could help you. If everything else fails, you should give your key away : P |

My laptop is 8 years old, and even dota 1 gives me a crappy fps in clashes. Now, I don't think I want a beta key anymore

If you upgrade your graphic card and memory, you can run with 30+ stable FPS in the retail(the game is not optimized for old pcs now).
The problem is not overheating? My FPS is stable in teamfights.

DotA 2 should be fine with your system config, RAM upgrade to 2 GB DDR3 will make it a lot better.
I wish i could play it, have a wonderful system :| |

I doubt that motherboard which supports DDR1 would support DDR3. Also if its playable for u now retail should go even smoother
