Default The DotA Experiment

To the members of the DotA community,

I am running a deep and complex study on the DotA community. Without going into too much detail, I just want to explain a little about my research.

My formal research began about five years ago when I studied post-game emotion in players. At this point I was an amateur psychology student with a passion for understanding the competitive phenomenon that is Defense of the Ancients. I played DotA every day during that time (and still do) so I decided to start my own research.

Those statistics gave me power to move onto my following study about my first working hypothesis. I spent a lot of time learning about will-power, so that was my topic of choice. This was an observational study with a post-game question. I.E. "On a scale of 1-10, how confident do you feel?"

Today, I have over fifty pages of notes addressing different trends as well as three working hypotheses. So now I'm reaching out to the community to help me gather enough samples to put together a comprehensive community analysis. I hope that it will help answer many questions addressed by the community.

I have been reaching out to older community members to help me out and I greatly appreciate their insight. However, I am by no means done interviewing/learning. I do believe my questionnaire itself is now primed enough to be sent out to the public. If you would please take your time to fill it out I would greatly appreciate it. Every-single-sample means so much to me.

Anyway, the rest can be found on the questionnaire. It is complex and has to be. It's like studying a planet.

Here's the link: The DotA 2 Community Analysis

Update: Questionnaire Closed! 1,800 Samples collected!

Thank you so much to everyone!

Here is a sneak peak at some of my latest research, you can toy around with it as you want.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,
TheDotAExperiment

TLDR: Please fill out my "Dota 2 Community Questionnaire" linked above. It literally means everything to me.

In terms of raw data, I can only share so much. Confidentiality is important and I don't want anyone who left personal information to feel exposed. However, I will definitely be posting results in a very complex graph form once completed, analyzing region-based trends, experience-based trends, and a whole lot more. (this will include a lot of raw data)

So far I've collected about 425 samples, my goal is to begin the analysis when the sample count reaches around 1,500.

I will also be publishing a lengthy article analyzing the results with community feedback and help. As I said earlier, complexity is of utmost importance in this study. Everyone who wants to be credited will be listed on the publication and the survey results as well.

I don't believe that you perceive it to contain, intrinsically, the meaning of swedish math teacher porn. Thus, it does not mean 'everything' to you.

...

Just kidding. You're doing some respectable shit there, mate. I'll fill it up.

I liked it, answered it correctly. But you should remake it I think. Some questions have double-meaning, and some are not defined enough. I'll point out all the questions I think are missing those features.

Q9. If you could name three Dota 2 heroes you consider imbalanced, who would they be?
You could add additional for explaining our opinion on why this hero is imbalanced.

Q16. Defending and counter-pushing are more important in Dota 2 than ganking and pushing.
That has triple-meaning. What if I was to say they're both important and it depends on the situation? Should I set the bar to five(which I did), but still?

Q21. Winning or losing a game has a strong impact on my mood.
This. Both make me sad, when the game was retarded(retard teammates, retard losses, fast wins, stupid idiots) and both make me happy if the game was interesting.

Q24. I do not like it when allies tell me what to do.
This should be like that: "I do not like it when allies tell me what to do assuming they're pointing out right strategies" or something like that. Normally every person won't like it if their teammate would tell them invalid things.

Q26. When an ally spends time farming rather than helping the team, I usually get annoyed.
Again. What if he needs to farm in order to outdps the enemy carry? Define those questions better. I'm far from stupid.

Besides that, I liked it.
Also, good luck on your research.

I can't change any questions at this point, but I did consider everything you mentioned while creating the questions. My goal was to keep things simple on the questionnaire and address the technicalities in the report.

Your feedback will help while generating my report as, naturally, the variables you addressed must be questioned.

With Q9- I added a "why?" box under each hero option. I can change questions with text answers.

Thanks

Done it.
There have been some questions where I would answer "depends on the situation".
For example, if my allies respect me and give me suggestions I like it, but I feel they don't respect me, then I don't like it and feel annoyed.
