Explanation

This is the standard skill build. One level in psi blades allows you to last hits creeps behind yours, and is a strong harassing skill if used correctly. We max Refraction as soon as possible, since it helps a lot to outlasthit/deny your opponent, and it also protects you against harass. This skill is what makes Lanaya a good solo mid and it worth skilling it 80% of the time. Then, we max Meld cause the burst damage and the -8 armor is devastating in mid game.
And, of course, ulti on levels 6, 11 and 16.
Note that you can take 1 level in Meld earlier if you are facing an hero with projectiles spells (like venge's or sven's one), but usually you won't have to do that cause those heroes don't go mid.

Explanation

You want to max Meld first when you know that refraction can't help you (when you are facing a hero with a spammable DoT spell, like viper or pudge). One level in refraction at level 2 can help you a lot against dot-heroes with 1 instant damage nuke: like pudge (to avoid hook's damages).
However, take care with this build when you are ganking: you can't tower pass as easily with only 1 level in refraction (until level 8).

c) Others

Sometimes, you'll need to trade immediate power for safety. The game doesn't go well: your supports can't gank, you are facing a strong laner that can outharrass you (like Batrider or Huskar), your Refraction can't help you, etc. In that case, you might want to get 1 or 2 extra levels in Psi Blades to have a few more last hits. You will become dangerous later in the game than usual, but it's better than being useless the whole game.
It is crucial to always have a TP on you when you hit your level 6: If you see a big battle happening, just TP in and try to grab some kills: It's a good way to get some Gold to recover from your poor early game.

In any case, the Golden Rule is: Be flexible.
Your are level 7 and you are about to gank a side lane, maybe it's better to take your second skill point in Meld than taking your fourth point in refraction cause you need the burst damage more. Maybe it's better to have your psi blades level 2 or 3 before maxing your meld if you can't hit (against high movement speed heroes for example).
I have given you 2 general skills builds, they work in a lot of situations, but always ask yourself "Is it the right way to go ?".

III – Itembuild

a)Starting items

It gives you a nice damage boost for easier last hits and enough regeneration. However, it lacks survivability since you only have +2 strength

The magic stick can be very helpful against spammers like zeus. A must have against batrider if you want to have a small chance to survive.
It also allows you a quick upgrade into magic wand, cause you already have all its components.

You save some gold for a fast bottle. If you know you will need bottle really soon it's a nice build to go.

b)Core items

Start with bottle, cause you will need the quick regeneration after ganking, and you can rune whore like crazy with your traps. Magic wand is also really nice, the burst regen can save your life or give you the mana you need to cast one needed spell.
After that, buy boots of speed, and then rush your dagger. Dagger is excellent on lanaya, making your gank easier, giving you an escape mechanism, as well as a better positioning in team fights
Then, you can finally upgrade your boots of speeds into power treads: The attack speed is welcome with your high damages and the flexibility it gives is really interesting. Abuse the fact that you can switch your power treads between strength, agility and intelligence, depending if you need survivability, damages or a little extra mana. Don't forget to turn your power treads into agility when you're using your bottle, to maximize the regeneration.

c)Luxuries items

You want to get those two items in 90% of your games. Sometimes, you might even want to get bkb before your dagger, against heavy disable and heavy DoT spells ! (Of course, if the enemy team got 0 disable, skip bkb)
Desolator has a good synergy with Meld, -14 armor reduction is no joke.

When you have those 2 items, you can buy others luxuries, depending on the situation:
  • Survivability

Tarrasque gives a huge amount of HP and solves your dependance to Refraction. Buy Satanic only if you don't have a Desolator (in most cases, you won't buy Satanic, but it's still a good choice in very lategame and it worth mentionning it)
  • DPS

For more damages, obviously. Buy mkb against heroes with evasion, but don't forget that true strike doesn't stack with desolator's buff placer.
Butterfly gives you good DPS, aswell as a little boost in survavibility, and Buriza for some epic-crits actions.
  • Utility

Buy guinsoo if you desperatly need another disable.

d)Optional

Phase boots are good on Lanaya, but power treads are often better. The +24 damages doesn't help that much since you already have +80, and it doesn't give you this litle boost in HP that you need.
However, phase boots is a good item when you aren't planing to buy a dagger, to give you a little bit extra mobility.
Buy Medallion only if you have an hard time farming your desolator or if you do need -6 extra armor really quickly into the game. Otherwise, let your teammates buy it for you.
Buy Wraith band/Bracer if you feel that you need a cheap boost in damages and HP.

e)Rejected items

I see a lot of players buying vanguard. This item delays your dagger for nothing really interesting: The extra HP helps, of course, but the HP regen isn't needed (you have a bottle), and the damage block doesn't matter if you don't draw the aggro.
You don't need others orb effects than desolator's one, or maybe some lifesteal in late game.
Lothar is also rejected. Why do you want to spend 3300 gold in this, when dagger is simply better ? Also, too easily counterable.

IV – Strategy

a)Using your spells

Refraction

Refraction seems really easy to use at first glance, however, there is few tricks to maximize its effects.
Use Refraction about 10 seconds before a gank/a team fight. You will benefit from its full effects, but you will also be able to use it a second time for another +80 damages and 5 instances damages blocks.
Don't use Refraction when you are under the effects of a DoT spell, it will destroys all the instances in less than one second, and you'll be as vulnerable as before. If you can, just wait the spell to end.
Also, take care of creeps: they will burn your instances really quickly. When you are ganking, don't click directly on heroes, but on the ground, to not draw the aggro on you.

b)Winning your lane

Lanaya is a strong solo mid hero that can give an hard time to a lot of commons solo. However, it can be hard to understand her paticular playstyle, and to make full use of her skills.
  • Last hit

Lanaya has high naturals damages, a bonus damages skill, and a nice attack animation. However, her range can be a problem, making her vulnerable to harrassement. This is why refraction is a so good laning spell: it protects you from spells and attacks, allowing you to last hit and deny in peace.
However, you can't always have refraction on you. There is another technique to farm in a relative security: Using the creep aggro.
Click on the ennemy hero and immediatly go back. Creeps will focusing and following you. It mooves the creep wave closer to yourself, for easier last hits. Avoid grabbing the aggro with refraction on, it may burn some precious charges.

  • Psi Blades

Psi Blade is the key to win your lane. With a proper positioning, you can harrass the opponent on each little creep kill, or have some lasts hits you wouldn't have without the cleave. Always try to line up with the ennemy hero when you hit a creep. Don't forget that attacking your own creeps will proc the cleave: Use it to your advantage, you can last hit and deny at the same time with only one attack.
  • Map awareness

The map awareness is important with every hero, but maybe even more with solo-mids heroes without escape mechanism. One single gank may ruin your laning phase, giving your opponent more gold, exp, and lane control, and that may have a huge impact in the mid game, where you are the more powerfull.
Watch at the minimap every 5 seconds, someone may walk on your traps. Take care of missing heroes. Don't try to kill the solo mid when heroes are missing, it's the best way to die.

c)Ganking

Here is the fun. Lanaya is a strong ganker, you should gank almost non-stop when you hit your level 7/8.
Here is a common Lanaya gank:
  • Go on a side-lane. Use refraction about 10 seconds before you start killing.
  • Use a trap, activate it.
  • Walk or blink next to your target, meld-attack it.
  • Auto attack until your target dies. Sometimes, another trap is necessary

Try to have the last hit, you need a lot of gold to farm your dagger and your desolator, and you don't want to spend all your time farming.
Be aware of the position of the next creepwave if you want to towerdive. Don't rush under the tower when a creepwave is about to come, they will burn your refraction down, and nothing protects you anymore from tower's hits and nukes.

d)Teamfights

Lanaya has some good teamfight potential. Her 5 seconds AoE slow with a 7 seconds cooldown is awesome and she can take down low hp support ou key-heroes in a few hits.
However, she is very fragile. Her refraction burns down really quiclky because of all those hits, aoe spells, summons, illusions, etc... and you have nothing more to protect you.
Timing is crucial, don't blink in first or you'll be focus down really quicly. Wait for the engage. After the first barrage of spells, blink behind ennemies line, and focus down their supports. Your role is to take down those fragiles heroes in a few seconds, they generally have disables which is really annoying for your team (and yourself). Coordination with your team is the key, choose your main target with them (usually a teamfight monster like earthasker or enigma before he casts his spells).
Spam your traps, spam your meld. Never stay in the middle of the battle, but always on the sides, killing isolated targets.

Invoker

Laning against Ancient Apparition is quite easy with Lanaya. Play normally: Last Hit, deny and harrass him. His Cold Feet is a bit boring, cause it burns 4 charges of refraction, but nothing really dangerous. If you know it will stun you, just Meld and wait, at least it protects you against attacks.
When you hit level 6, you become a serious thread for him, spam traps and auto attack him a bit, force him to play defensive. If you find a good rune, go for the kill. However, don't be overconfident and towerpass him with half-hp: He can deal a lot of damages with Cold Feet and his Ultimate and kill you before you can even hit him.
