HELP WANTED!
Hello everybody! I'm back to PlayDotA... I guess, for awhile. I'll be hanging on every now and then, but I can't say when, why and what. Or something else.
Anyways, the thing is: I need your help. Well, basically because I'm so darn busy that my DotA experience has dropped very very very much, and thus, my interest level dropped superbly.
So, I need your experience, your help, your two cents (or more). Basically, I am opening this up for my Mortred guide ONLY. So the rest aren't there, yet. I hope it will soon.
If you think you want to help me to add spice to this guide, make it better, or you have plentiful suggestions or tweakings, just PM me, or quote this whole thing and just comment on the post.
[PMing me would be faster since I will hardly be coming onto here unless I edit the guide.]

-I won't add things that are in the guide, or some other things. If you think what you're suggesting I'm inputting is relevant and good for the players who are viewing the guide, feel free to PM me. BUT, you need to add information your suggestion IS relevant, and not plain bullshit.
So that's it! I'll update the guide every sunday. So, if you wanna' know if your idea/suggestion got plucked into the guide, just scroll all the way down to the bottom. If you see your name in the credits, you're in! If not, then maybe you wanna' change some things with your suggestion.
THAT'S IT BABY! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! -

I. Introduction and Foreword
~
A Dagger, a Blink, a Boom
- The introduction of the guide says it all. The first reason, on why I wrote a guide for Mortred, is due to boredom, and also a small reason due to the less successful guides of Mortred up here in PlayDotA. And so, I began taking up this opportunity to write out this guide for one of the hard carries in the game of DotA, Mortred.

The easiest part, was to design the guide to make it look more stylistic and more fantastic, while for the hardest part, was to input all the designs that I have, with the skill builds, and all the nqb getting in with it. I hope that this guide can help people, both new and advanced players first experiencing Mortred, can really pick her up and learn how to play her the right way in.

This guide is not written for competitive games, neither does the information this guide contains are competitive.
"Mortred is a real potential damage dealer late game, and potentially crossing early game and mid game is the real border. Unless played properly, farmed it up, and items are gotten, Mortred is unstoppable for the whole game. Some people, people that feel that they can kill Mortred easily late game, between 50 mins onwards, they are wrong. Mortred can easily fire up the red hits, and bring down the hero within seconds. Fulfill Mortred's role, and Beyond Godlike streak is just a few steps away." - Author's note.

Gameplay Tips:
• Spam Stifling Dagger to farm and also creep pull/stack.
• Gank when the opportunity arises, with an ally, 2 or 3 core items, or when you've maxed Stifling Dagger/Phantom Strike or skilled at least 1 point in Coup de Grace.
• Always use Phantom Strike to chase heroes.
• Never initiate, instead, use Stifling Dagger to slow enemy heroes so your team can easily take them out in big teamfights.

II. Hero Introduction
~

Mortred

Background Story:
Born into the reclusive Night Elf order known as the Wardens and shunned by mainstream Night Elf society, Mortred pledged allegiance to the Scourge to take revenge. A perfect blend of strength and speed, the years spent alone in the forests of Ashenvale allowed her to blend into the terrain, appearing phantomlike at times and striking when you least expect it. The deadly precision with which she carries out her attacks has made her a valuable member of the Scourge, and it is clear why she is known as the Phantom Assassin.

Pros:

[+] - A very low mana costing creeping skill
[+] - Blur at level 4 makes you harder to see, which lets us escape easily
[+] - Has one of the best critical ultimate in the game
[+] - One of the highest Agility gain in the game
[+] - Above average movespeed

Cons:

[-] - Vulnerable to disables
[-] - Item dependant
[-] - Low hit points even with a good Strength and Strength gain

When to pick:

• Fragile heroes that are vulnerable to critical procs
• When there are not as much anti-carry heroes
• When there are not as much early game harrassers
• When you just want to play some critical fun

When not to pick:

• Not so much fragile heroes
• When there are alot of anti-carry heroes
• When there are alot of early game harrassers
• When you don't want to play some critical fun

17 + 2.05 - 23 + 3.15 - 13 + 1

Mortred's Strength and Strength gain is average, but her Agility and Agility gain is epic. Her Intelligence and Intelligence gain is quite low, but thanks to that, her spells don't really cost alot of mana.

Level 2 - 80 damage, 50% slow for 2 seconds
Level 3 - 120 damage, 50% slow for 3 seconds
Level 4 - 160 damage, 50% slow for 4 seconds

30/25/20/15 mana cost and 8 cooldown at all levels.

Phantom Strike - [B]

Teleports to a unit and attacks it. Gains 100% attack speed for 3 seconds while attacking that same target. Maximum of 4 attacks.

Level 1 - 30 seconds cooldown
Level 2 - 20 seconds cooldown
Level 3 - 10 seconds cooldown

Stifling Dagger: Should be maxed out since at level 4, it would've cost a lone 15 mana, with 8 cooldown, which makes it more spammable to deal with creeps. Also, it can be thrown to farm at level 2/3, and it can't be dodged by blinking.

Phantom Strike: Should be taken at level 1 so that you can blink to an ally if the enemy tried to do a stun/disable to get their first blood. Then, max along Stifling Dagger to make it's casting range longer so as to chase down enemy heroes and kill them.

Blur: Is not really good early game, but you can replace level 15/9's Stats with 1 point of Blur if you are facing alot of harrassers in your lane so that you can farm easily with Stifling Dagger, or level 4's Phantom Strike if you have strong harrassers.

Coup de Grace: Should be maxed since it is one of the best criticals in the game, so it's at 10/11/16 levels. We don't take it anymore at 6 since we don't have a big damage output, and the critical is just not useful then.

B. Item Build
~
Starting Item Build: - 421 gold

Quelling Blade: Mortred is a hard carry. And in order for her role to complete, she needs alot of damage dealing items which costs high enough. And so, Quelling Blade gives us some potential in farming and also a good percentage bonus which makes our last-hitting more easier. Dispose once you get Dominator because the lifesteal and the bonus don't stack.

GG Branches (A.K.A Ironwood Branches): GG Branches is a great item which gives us some attribute bonuses for a low cost. Though we need 2, they are still great and also disposable.

Ancient Tango of Essifation: A decent healing item, and costs 10 gold less than Salves. We take Tango since we need last-hitting and farming to get our items.

Core Items: - 11110 gold

Helm of the Dominator: Dominator is a fast and free item which gives us lifesteal and also 20 damage. It also gives us armor and makes farming much easier.

Battlefury: Bfury, one of the damage dealing items, and Mortred needs it very much in order for her critical to proc with an even higher damage. Also, the cleaving makes farming more easier, with some possible regen.

Wraith Bands: Gives us good stat bonuses and also some damage. It's also disposable when you want to sell them for other luxury items to take their places.

Poor Man's Shield: A fantastic item on Mortred. Though we don't need Vanguard's damage block, Poor Man's is an easy item to farm up for, and gives us good damage block when farming for other big consecutive items. Thanks to Val for the item!

Power Treads: Of all our boots, we choose this boots. Treads not only gives us attack speed, it also gives us another great stat bonus, but it gives 10 to only 1 attribute. Which do we give it to? Obviously Strength due to the very low health of Mortred's. We don't need Agility due to Phantom Strike, and not Intelligence since we don't need alot of mana, nor the extra mana to cast our spells.

Black King Bar: A great item, and thanks once again to Val, we are swapping it back to core. Mortred's low health is very low, and we obviously need some extra help and also a buff. The Ogre Axe in the recipe gives a great help in Mortred's low health and also some extra damage. BKB is very essential against nukers and stunners. 10 Avatar is long, so use it when you need it.

Luxury Items:

Satanic - 6150 gold: One of the best items in DotA, and it became better with Mortred. Mortred's low health can be countered by buying Satanic because it gives 25 Strength, which buffs up Mortred's Strength, affecting her health in the process. A must buy after core if you still feel that your health is still too low.

Heart of Terrasque - 5500 gold: Another great counter to Mortred's low hp. This time, it gives much more bonuses with a hp boost of 300. You might think that the passive is not good for Mortred. But think again. With Blur at level 4, you can easily hide and regain your health like X-Men's Wolverine.

Divine Rapier: - 6200 gold: The best damage item, has just got better with Mortred. With the 250 damage, it makes Mortred get a 4 digit critical alone! This item is not to be joked when Mortred buys it. It's better for the enemies of Mortred to stay away as far as you can.

Aegis of the Immortal - Priceless: Late game Rosh - and this is the payout. It gives you a VERY immortal feeling, and makes you almost a hero to be reckoned with.

Monkey King Bar - 5400 gold: MKB, or Monkey King Bar, is actually one of those high boom damage items. Of course, when worked with Mortred, she might just get those 4 digit criticals having the blasts. If your red critical doesn't show up, not to worry, it doesn't mean they don't critical. It's just that they deal the damage, but don't show up. Use it against people who bought Butterfly to take them out, to let them know that PA is one the heroes that hate that item.

Rejected Items:

The Butterfly - 6000 gold: Evasion doesn't stack. Total waste when you've got everything Bfly has.

Buriza/Crystalys - 5800/2200 gold: Hey crazy, you've got a critical and you still want another one?

Lothar's Edge - 3400 gold: Too much over-disappearing can be alot of trouble.

Items that counters Mortred:

Blademail - 2200 gold: The one and only item that counters Mortred very hard. Blademail returns ALL your critical hits, making them dealing damage to you! Also, Blademail can't be dropped, so killing the hero and destroying it would be of no use. It would be best to STOP AUTO-ATTACKING once the enemy turns on Blademail. Once the spikes go off, finish the enemy off.

Ghost Scepter: A true touch of the boomshock, but not really clearing enough. Ghost Scepter heroes escapes your DPS strikes and eventually escape unharmed. And for Mortred, within those 4 seconds, she can particualarly deal a large amount of damage if her critical proc during that time. All in all, Ghost Scepter is a bad news for Mortred.

Monkey King Bar: As much as this item is good for you, it is an enemy of you in it's list. MKB goes through Blur, which means it's True Strike kinda' puts your dodge out of place and makes it much useless. As long as you see a Demon Edge, or Javelin's, kill that hero immediately to stop them from getting MKB to destroying you. If not, just try to kill that hero first and all will be fine. If not, call an ally and finish him.

IV. Early Game Strategy
~
Laning:

Which lane should Mortred head to? Obviously, top for Scourge and bottom for Sentinel, since those lanes are the lanes that can provide you with a near tower and also farm better.

Farming:

If played wrongly early game, Mortred's late game and mid game will be affected. And we definitely don't want that to happen, because we want to play Mortred correctly. The easiest way to farm in early game is to throw the daggers, when they reach around level 2/3. By then they don't cost as much mana, and they can also easily take out the creeps. You should begin to throw Daggers once the creeps get 1/4 health, since we don't want to pointlessly throw our daggers when the creeps don't die and the enemy hero just denies it.

Babysitting Style:

Babysitters do Mortred very well early game because she can farm easily and get what she needs for mid and late game and practically own. It may be tough if your babysitter doesn't listens to you, and tries to leave the lane. It may not be a problem, unless the enemy is alone. But it can turn out to be a tragedy if you die, since you lose gold, and you can't get what you want. If possible, switch lanes with a lone hero if your babysitter acts stupid.

Early Ganking:

Is definitely not advised. If the gank goes wrong, again, it affects your gold and making you harder to reach your items. If possible, let your allies to attack the enemy, then once they run, throw a dagger. It doesn't matter now who gets to kill, because once the enemy hero dies, return to your lane fast. If you meet enemy heroes along the way, blink to an ally and farm back on your lane. If they continue to chase, counter-gank if possible or/and return to a tower.

V. Mid Game Strategy
~
Ganking Mid:

It can be done, once you have at least 2 - 3 core items. Start to find lone heroes, or heroes that are lower leveled than you. Start with the same killing technique, Phantom Strike the enemy, hit them with your Coup de Grace filing it up. Once they run, throw a dagger to slow them down and go in for the kill. It's as easy as it should be. If they have allies there, it's best to study the situation before going in.

Blurring - Teamfights:

Your 1st Blur should be at level 10, or 2/4 if you were harrassed much early game. The 1st Blur is one of the wicked ones, a half of the evasion from Butterfly. Make use of it when teamfights occur. Again, never initiate. By initiating yourself, it just means suicidal. Once the fights start, target heroes that are not doing anything. Once fights dissipitate, Dagger the heroes that seemed to be in full form in the fight before. If the teamfight didn't win in your team's favour, blink to a nearby ally and retreat fast.

Daggering:

Level 4 Stifling Dagger is a great tool for chasing and hero killing. The slow is superb and the duration is just nice for you to catch up and kill the enemy hero. Sitfling Dagger also can't be dodged by blinking, which is good when enemy heroes are on low health, and the vision from the dagger can be great when it rolls in so you can see if the enemy is preparing to gank you from the side.

VI. Late Game Strategy
~
4 digit crits pwning em' hard:

If you're owning, and your early game was pretty fantastic, you should start to get those 1-2-3-4 red hits that shows up on your counter. They are good news for you, and very bad news for the enemy hero once they understand properly what it all means for them. At least 1 luxury item is needed. Rapier to dish out that BIG damage.

Rosh late game:

Roshing late game for Mortred alone, as a surprise, is not really a problem. Get those 4 digits crits and you're good to go. Just attack and watch your hp come running back when Roshan hits a transparent hero, making his stun less useful against you. If you came as a team, it would be best to take the Aegis, or just give it to someone else when you've gotten a Satanic or Heart.

Late Game Teamfights:

Late game teamfights are always the most havoc'iest' ones during the game, and if you don't keep track of what's going on, you could easily lose out. Again, you should be fine this time. Still never initiate. But for now, try to take out the other team's most capable hero that can destroy your team, so that they lose a valuable hero. Then, the rest of the fight just continues, and you should be aiming for the next capable hero that can do the same after that.

VII. Friends and Foes
~
Friends:

Warlock, one of the best support heroes and babysitters. His Shadow Word will keep you company early game, and you can continue to spam Dagger like nobody's business. You're going to have some fun once Warlock's Infernal comes down and a Dagger is punted at the enemy.

The Scourge heroes unite, and Lich will keep the enemy looking for health. With Lich babysitting you, you can just farm like nobody's business again. Once they get Mekansm, Both of you are going to slow the enemy down, and getting your essential early kill, if possible, but it's better to farm and let your Lich deal with them, dontcha' think?

Another one of those great supports and babysitters. His Grave is awesome on you, and makes you carry your way through to mid game. The Poison Touch is awesome and you can count on it once you start to gank during mid game.

Magnataur. He's a real help. How? In big teamfights, or just a solo kill, he so-calls "Buff" you up. With his Empower, you're going to land those easy kills, when you're damage gets higher. If you can't get those 4 digit crits, he'll be a great help to you in memorable ways. Also, Reverse Polarity makes Mortred's Bfury cleave much more successful in between each hit on the click.

Foes:

Razor, one of the DPS heroes that comes shocking from behind you. You Strike in, get purged. It's fine, wait until Coup de Grace procs - no, not anymore once his Static Link stretches out and sucks out your damage one by one. If you're not careful, his Plasma Field will take care of your little escape helpings, and then boom, Dead.

Rotound'jere, laugh as you might. When your low health was low enough, it's just starting to get lower. His Heartstopper Aura just slows your health down if not careful, and one cast of Reaper's Scythe at 1/2 health, you can count on it that you won't be coming back for a period of time.

Your game is over early game if you meet Vipar'. He'll just orbwalk you, making your farming abit - ALOT harder. Try as you might, his poison will just wreak havoc on you.

They aren't really bad, it's just that they are very annoying for Mortred. With Smoke Screen and Blind coming your way, it will take some time before finally finishing them. Although Rikimaru can just invis away, these guys are a pain for you until you get your MKB.

WARNING: THE WORST OF THE WORST COUNTERS:

Doom counters Dagger, Strike, Blur and your critical, which makes you completely a sitting duck with just your main attirubtes and armor.

Other Friends/Foes that aren't mentioned:

Other friends for Mortred:

Other foes for Mortred:

There are alot more, this is just a small list of them. Will add on other categories if possible.

VIII. Strategies
~
Ganking:

Ganking with Mortred, is quite easy. Just get level 9 or above, or just at least 1 level in Coup de Grace, 2 - 3 core items, and you are good to go. Here's pictures for helping on how to kill heroes with Mortred:

(For pit's sake, this is an EXAMPLE. You just need to know the skills done accordingly and not caring about whether the enemy backfires or not. And the items; yes, they aren't what you all would get. It's just a great gather up since this guide lacked some screenies inclusive of ganks, and so I just got up some items enough for a gank - and this screenies were done then. )

Here's Mortred, and Tauren Chieftan. Mortred is trying to gank Taruen, with Wraith Bands, Boots, Dominator and Perseverance.

Here, moments after, Mortred starts the fight by Phantom Striking in, and Tauren Chieftan turns out to fight back.

Unfortunately, Mortred's Coup de Grace procs like infnite, bringing Tauren's health down alot.

Another Dagger thrown and a shifting Phantom Strike, Tauren dies almost infintely.

(Enemy is computer easy for demonstration purposes.)

Item Building:

Core Items:

For Mortred's core item building, if gone wrong, CAN and WILL ruin your late game interval structure of your hunger for those big damage items. So if you need help in building them, I'd say you'd come to the right section.

Helm of the Dominator: Lifesteal, probably would be best after you're done with Poor Man's, or 1 Wraith Band, or Treads. Lifesteal isn't that much needed early game, but it's definitely a great item when moving on to mid.

Battlefury: Cleave. I'd suggest getting the damage items for extra farm, or Perseverance if you are having a hard lane. Battlefury would be best after everything and you're ganking/farming very very well.

Wraith Bands: Good stat bonuses, would be best taken after Poor Man's. Though I agree, you need the help from the stats, a safe trip farming is alot better than not having any other protection.

Poor Man's Shield: Probably the 1st Core item you should be getting. Poor Man's can be easily bought from the side shops, and that makes it very good so that you don't have to ask for a courier from your sitter and lane uneffectively.

Power Treads: Treads should be taken after Poor Man's, and maybe before 1 Wraith Band or after 2 Wraith Bands, but that is up to you. If you need health and attack speed, then get it by all means. But make sure Poor Man's is done.

Black King Bar: BKB, the last of the last core. It should be taken before Bfury, and/or after Dominator. BKB is a top priority if there are nukers or disablers that can take out Mortred in a whim. If not, it is best to farm up Bfury before getting BKB. If you'd neglect lifesteal, then take it as well.

Luxury Items:

You should make necessary choices on the luxury side, because when you're done with your core, just... do your best and get what you want. Mostly, the game ends before you can get a luxury item, or 1 luxury item after.

Skill Strategies:

Stifling Dagger

Stifling Dagger is one of the pure damage skills, and often, when played right, can easily be one of the wicked skills Mortred can use to snap and kill without needing to Phantom Strike once more.

Tips:

• Stifling Dagger is exceptional when dealing with creeps on low health. One throw of a tip and you can gain extra gold if cautious. You should begin to throw when they are lower than 1/4 of their health, which is 25%. Enemy heroes can easily pick them off by denying, and you, can easily lose precious gold when you could've gained them. It's better to throw them when you know that they are going to die, and possibly not get denied in the process.
• When dealing with very fragile heroes in your lane, Stifling Dagger can easily pick them off with a start. If your ally babysitter just harrassed them too much, and you realise that they are healing with Clarities/Salves, it is easier to throw a dagger and waste their precious monument healing items. That way, they will either stay back for a long time, or retreat to base with undefined low health.
• Wicked skill, wicked Mortred. This skill is awesome during big teamfights, and chasing down heroes that underestimated your Daggering potential. With a great deal in slowing enemy heroes, your team can easily bombarge them into pieces, making a slow but proccessible win by your team. Also, your team can also see if there are other heroes hiding from teamfights due to the vision granted from Stifling Dagger.

Phantom Strike - [B]

The other Blink Strike, but abit otherwise. Phantom Strike, in menace, can be a killing machine for you, if your Coup de Grace did something special and wonderful in the 3 seconds of 100% increase attack speed.

Tips:

• 100% increse attack speed for 3 seconds may not be tough for most people, and alot of Mortred underestimaters fail to see the point. With it, you can allow your Coup de Grace to bring out it's real potential within the 3 seconds, making it able to write out the red numbers.
• A quick escape is always helpful when you are kept being disabled or harrassed and your ally babysitter is not sure of what to do. In dire situations, Phantom Strike can help you 'blink' to an nearby ally for safety. With the casting ranges getting higher each level, your opponent will keep a handful or desires waiting opportunities when he can't get to kill you and wasted a noob killing opportunity.

Blur

Blur, one of the extraordinary and different passives, is what that makes Mortred different from other 'assasins'. With Blur maxed at level 4, you can see a whole lot of different from what it was at level 1.

Tips:

• Transparent mode on. What it means is that you are totally invisible when you're Blur was level 4. Which is a great pact, and the bad thing would be that Mortred, for you, is also totally invisible. Of course the setting course for most heroes, is because of the health bars that reveals Mortred out. Unless kept safetly and with a maxed Phantom Strike, you can immediately strike out your opponents without the need of being seen, of being revealed under the health bar over you.
• Evasion, dodge, it all comes down to 1 very special thing. It gives you a chance, a chance to evade an attack, spell, skill, or item ability, which is very very awesome. It gives you a 2nd chance at things if you screw up, and also epic when trying to escape, awesome when trying to to gank without fail when your enemy pops out all the red missess.

Coup de Grace

Coup de Grace, unlike any other criticals, and being one of the ultimates of a hero, the specialty of it brings our Mortred's ganking and late game opportunity to DPS and cut through every single enemy hero without fail. The distance fails, but it all comes down to 4 digit numbers that brings about Coup's damage potential.

Tips:

• Coup de Grace actually, if you all reading this guide, still aren't aware, increases Mortred's damage potential every level by 15%/30%/45%. You might not think it is much, but every Mortred player and user can tell you, it is THAT much. With all those damage coming in, you are giving out 4x that damage, including your bonus damage which is alot more than it seems.
• Whenever it doesn't proc, it is a signal. That signal, is supposed to be that you should always hit some neut creeps or just plain old ones to get your next critical to proc. Here is some info posted by windrunner023, a great helper of the guide:
The fact that every time you don't proc a Critical hit with your Ult (well, all crit items/skills actually), it increases your chances to get a Crit the next hit by a certain percent (I remember a thread about this, but I can't remember what it was...). So, the "Strat" would be to hit a creep 1 or 2 times (neutral or not), then go gank/roam so you will be more likely to get a Crit hit as your first or second hit; increasing your DPS a little bit more. It might be a little time-consuming, but I think it's a pretty legit way of making sure you get a quick Crit when you are about to gank a hero who is tower hugging or is low.

IX. Q&A
~
Blur is awesome for ganking at level 2/4, why not taking it first?

Blur early game is not useful, especially when you have an easy time farming with a babysitter. Because with Blur early, it ruins your Phantom Strike's cooldown, which we want it to be leveled faster so we can chase down enemy heroes.

Dude, Butterfly is a crazy item. MORTRED NEEDS IT!

Mortred doesn't apply to it, she isn't one of the definite heroes that needs that special evasion and attackspeed that goes superbly crazy when Blur doesn't even stacks. You can get it, if you make sure you get your Blur at 22-25, which is NOT advised.

Idiot? Use Dagger to harass!

If you think so, go ahead. The enemy hero will just think you're wasting mana and not trying to be who you are, which is a hard carry role. Dagger is pointless at level 1, 2 and 3 when it comes to harrassing. And by the time you get to level 4, you still shouldn't think of killing the enemy yet until the enemy stupidly gets their health lowered to less than 1/4.

HoundKnifer does a good PA in this one. Though his early game he died 2 times, it was epicable for him to reach a topmost level higher than the rest of the players. He gets Bracers, Wraith Bands, Black King Bar and also Monkey King Bar in this one.

XI. Signing Off
~
Well, practically, I'm finally done writing the guide. Mortred is not as good as she is in early game then late game, because she is a hard carry, and carries like her need to be able to farm up her distinctive items so that she can own the game. I hope that you've learned something from the guide, and learning how to play Mortred.
