Introductions

Like all decent guides a simple introduction is needed, I will explain the point of this guide to you morons that are too.. well.. stupid to understand a simple implying message such as "Speed is an understatement"

If by now you still haven't understood this guide will be about a carry and/or semi tank alchemist. I think many people underestimate his power as a carry and tend to go with his tanky side, but what most of you don't know is that his attack speed is actually the highest in the game (with the right items of course) <-- I'll be using that as an incentive but to be honest I doubt you will be able to go an all out attack speed build, especially if the other team is half decent.

Now you're probably wondering "Wait I thought Ursa and Windrunner were the fastest attackers (herp derp) " WELL WRONG AGAIN. But I'll get to that in another section.

I want you to know I won't be walking you through every single step of playing, you must have some level of skill and knowledge, and to attempt this playstyle you must have sound last hit skills

- Hero Introduction -

We can't forget about our beloved Alchemist introduction and his background story.

The Alchemist is a difficult foe to handle, but if left to his own devices he can amass enormous amounts of gold at an alarming rate. His Acid Spray covers a large area with toxic chemicals, which deal physical damage and reduce the armor of any foe caught in the cloud. Attempting to fight the Alchemist while in an acid cloud is foolhardy at best, especially if he uses his Chemical Rage transformation skill. Chemical Rage drastically increases the life, regeneration, and attack speed of the Alchemist, transforming him into a deadly fighter. Possibly his most dangerous skill, however, is Unstable Concoction. Although it takes some time to charge, Unstable Concoction results in one of the longest stuns in the game and causes a good deal of damage. Although the Alchemist can be annoying to fight, it's best to keep a close eye on him. Goblin's Greed directly increases the amount of gold the Alchemist gains when killing creeps, and as he kills more the bonus increases. Unless kept in check, this Goblin/Ogre combo can cause a lot of mayhem late in the game.

Having enlisted under the ranks of the Sentinel for mere personal gain, the Alchemist's quest for amassing wealth to fund his research is a tireless and relentless one. Both sadistic and cruel in his methods, this heartless Goblin cares not what means he must resort to for a sizable bounty. Whether he chooses to paralyze his foes with toxic concoctions or drench them in corrosive acids, Razzil Darkbrew remains steadfast in his calm, calculated approach, despite their constant wails of agony.

Hero Statistics

Sight Range: 1800 / 1400

Strength
25 + 1.8

Agility
11 + 1.2

Intelligence
25 + 1.8

- Overview -

Lets go into further detail of these stats

Alchemist has pathetically low starting armor and agility meaning harass against him is going to be 5x worse, his stat gain is utterly horrible. Luckily for his 25 base strength and intelligence he can tank up and spam his spells a little more.

His attack animation is rather good meaning for those of you who last hit like a drow it will be much easier. As for his damage, it is decent too, unfortunately his movespeed isn't the best but is countered by his Chemical Rage late game.

Here are some pros and cons.

Pros
  • His damage is good
  • Decent lane control having Acid Spray
  • Adjustable role
  • Has a strong nuke that also stuns for a high duration

Cons
  • Terrorbad stat growth
  • Very dependent on Chemical Rage
  • Quite item dependent to make a difference late game
  • You need a half decent team if you're going to even make it late game

Skill Set

Oh yes, the skills section. A place where magical things happen. When it comes to learning how to play a hero it never hurts to learn further about their skills. Aside from the pretty information all lined out I will be showing some pics for those of you who aren't so "literate"

Acid Spray

Acid Spray

_______.Sprays high-pressure acid across a target area. Hostile units who step across the contaminated terrain take mixed damage per second and have their armor reduced.

______.________._______.___._______.__________________________.
 ManaCooldownC. RangeAoEDurationEffects
116022 sec90062516 sec8 damage/second, reduces armor by 3
216022 sec90062516 sec16 damage/second, reduces armor by 4
316022 sec90062516 sec24 damage/second, reduces armor by 5
416022 sec90062516 sec32 damage/second, reduces armor by 6

?Damage type: mixed
?This ability can hit magic immune units.
?The actual AoE of this ability is significantly larger than the visual effect.

That kid called you noob? Someone said something about your mother again? Well today we have a special offer for you. ACID SPRAY. Yes sir, burn that smile right off their face and deal some decent damage too.

If you want some pictures to feed your mind on the cast range and AoE of this skill click the pretty spoiler tab below.

Not much to explain here, It's the cast range of Acid Spray

As for this the AoE of Acid Spray is 625, however the AoE circle may be a little misleading as there is about 100 extra range on it, just incase you wanted to know

As for this, 625 is a pretty large AoE and I thought I might let you get a feel of how much space it covers

Acid Spray is a great tool to farm creeps firstly it reduces their armor which makes it deal even more damage, second its cooldown is relatively low meaning you can spam it more (if you have a good enough mana pool/regen). It's minus armor effect is very noticeable especially when that enemy hero goes in to harass and a creep takes out half his hp (not actually..). and it will seriously piss enemies off in the laning phase because its AoE is so huge and if heroes are stupid enough to stay in it.. well.. use your imagination.

Unstable Concoction

Unstable Concoction

_______.Razzil brews up an unstable concoction that he can throw at an enemy hero, to stun and deal damage. Razzil can brew for up to 5 seconds, each second increases the potency of the concoction. After the 5 seconds, there is a small buffer window. If Razzil does not throw the concoction soon after it will blow up and Razzil himself will suffer as if he was hit by the concoction. Concoction can blow up mid air if fired too late.

______.________._______.___._______.__________________________.
 ManaCooldownC. RangeAoEDurationEffects
112016 sec775N/A0.25 - 1.75 secondsUp to 130 damage and 1.75 second stun
212016 sec775N/A0.25 - 2.5 secondsUp to 200 damage and 2.5 second stun
312016 sec775N/A0.25 - 3.25 secondsUp to 270 damage and 3.25 second stun
412016 sec775N/A0.25 - 4 secondsUp to 340 damage and 4 second stun

?Damage type: physical
?While brewing the concoction, Alchemist can still move around and take action. He will flash red while the concoction is brewing.
?A timer above Alchemist's head will indicate the remaining brew time on the concoction
?An indicator around Alchemist indicates the range for the Alchemist player.
?Maximum effects will be achieved after 5 seconds brewing time.
?Before launching the concoction, it will blow up if channeled for more than 7 seconds, checking at 0.5 second intervals (allows up to 7.5 seconds brew time)
?After launching the concoction, it will blow up 7 seconds after brewing started, checking every 0.02 seconds.
?The concoction moves at 900 speed, and provides 400/400 sight range.
?If the concoction explodes mid air, it will affect one enemy unit within 175 AoE around its position.
?Unstable Concoction is blocked by Linken's Sphere.

I brew potions. Ladies, please one at a time. Take note that it's physical damage, so it synergises with Acid Spray as the acid reduces their armor allowing your concotion to deal more damage.
Below are some more pictures for you illiterate dropouts.

775 Cast Range

Once the concoction has charged for up to 5 seconds Razzil goes red, there is a 2 second time window in which Razzil has to shoot the concotion otherwise he is damaged and stunned instead.

If you shoot the concoction too late it will explode midair, however 1 random enemy unit close enough to the concoction will be damaged and stunned

Another great nuke and stun, however if you don't get it off in time you end up hurting yourself like a depressed emo. Another downside is that heroes can juke you in trees or something like that, you end up taking the damage and then you end up failing beyond epicness when they turn around and kill you. However to all downsides there are upsides, its cast range (as shown in the pictures above) isn't actually bad, meaning you can shoot it from a safe distance. If you do manage to get it off the enemy takes quite a good amount of damage and the stun duration is quite long.

Goblins Greed

Goblins Greed

_______.The Goblin converts the creep's corpse into gold. You get more gold for every extra creep you killed in the last 20 seconds.

______.________._______.___._______.__________________________.
 ManaCooldownC. RangeAoEDurationEffects
1N/AN/AN/AN/A20 sec2 bonus gold and 2 bonus gold for every enemy killed in last 20 secs
2N/AN/AN/AN/A20 sec4 bonus gold and 2 bonus gold for every enemy killed in last 20 secs
3N/AN/AN/AN/A20 sec6 bonus gold and 2 bonus gold for every enemy killed in last 20 secs
4N/AN/AN/AN/A20 sec8 bonus gold and 2 bonus gold for every enemy killed in last 20 secs

?There is a cap of 26 bonus gold.
?Also works on hero kills.
?The -stats (-st) command can be used to know how much gold you gained with this skill.

Feeling poor? Well fret no more, you have the ability to turn dead bodies into gold, HOW COOL IS THAT!? With this you'll be richer then Bill Gates in no time!

Confused? See the screenshots below!

2 bonus gold is gained per creep killed as shown here

Or here

If you still don't see it you could look here / ..

The -st command can be used to see how much gold you racked up in last nights sales.

Contrary to popular belief Goblins Greed is actually not that good early game, unfortunately there aren't enough creeps to extend it to a noticeable degree and your farming power is just not that great to make full use of it. I'm not saying it's completely bad, sure that extra gold lets you get an item faster but it's just not so effective. Late game when you have a great item set and can take down a 9 man creep wave in 10 seconds is when it comes into full effect. If you're a first time Alchemist user you may be a little confused on how this skill works, the bonus gold is independent for each creep meaning you will only continue to get 2 bonus gold per creep until 20 seconds of killing a creep not 20 seconds after the last creep was killed. If you still don't understand, continue to play Alchemist and you will get the hang of it.

Chemical Rage

Chemical Rage

_______.The Alchemist causes his Ogre to enter a chemically induced rage reducing base attack cooldown and increasing hitpoints and regeneration. Slightly improves movement speed.

______.________._______.___._______.__________________________.
 ManaCooldownC. RangeAoEDurationEffects
15045 secN/AN/A25 sec1.45 BAT, 300 Bonus HP, and 15 HP/3 Mana Bonus Regeneration, +30 Movespeed
210045 secN/AN/A25 sec1.3 BAT, 600 Bonus HP, and 30 HP/7.5 Mana Bonus Regeneration, +40 Movespeed
315045 secN/AN/A25 sec1.15 BAT, 900 Bonus HP, and 60 HP/12 Mana Bonus Regeneration, +60 Movespeed

?Has a 0.35 seconds transformation time.
?You can dodge stuns while transforming.

Who said steroids were illegal? A big ass purple goblin, no ones gonna notice that, get hyped up with that attack speed and regenerate like a dragon knight, get into 5th gear and own shit like a boss.

Lets see how the goblin looks in a pretty purple.

If you didn't know what the goblin alchemist looks like in Chemical Rage, well now you do. Not the most attractive hero, nonetheless the benefits are from this skill are substantial.

Chemical Rage in my opinion one of the best abilities a tanky carry hero can get. Even at level 1 it can make a huge difference, the hp and mana regen is absolutely amazing when laning, a level 1 ulti you say? yes I do say, that 15 hp regen a sec makes a significant difference, it provides better regen than a hood and vanguard put together. Bonus hp? Don't mind if I do, couldn't tank that finger of death? well now you can, and lion will be fingering himself when you've regened it back in 10 seconds. The bonus movement speed might not be too noticable but it's something and as for the lower BAT (Base Attack Time) well it's better then more attack speed (in a certain sense) and I will show you how to maximise this later on.

True Speed

If you wish to see how the Alchemist can attack so fast using some simple maths then click the spoiler tab below (this is actually quite informative so I suggest you read this section)

Like I said in the intro, Alchemist is can attack faster then ANY other hero in DotA, let me show you a little maths..

This formula can be found in the dota mechanics section of this website

Attack Speed Formula

To determine how fast a unit attacks, the formula below is used:

Attacks per second = (1 + IAS)/BAT

Note: IAS in this formula is a percentage, so you must divide your actual IAS by 100 before using it in this formula.

Example of formula:
Vengeful Spirit has a BAT of 1.7
If Vengeful Spirit has a total of 160 IAS, the formula will be as follows:
Attacks per second = (1 + 1.60)/1.7 = 1.53 times per second.

Alchemist has a Base Attack Time (BAT) of 1.7 meaning he will attack once every 1.7 seconds. (excluding agility)

Warcraft has a cap of bonus attack speed up to 400% or +400

Using the formula in the spoiler above we can learn how fast Alchemist can attack normally, without the use of his ultimate. for example..

(1 + 4.00)/1.7 = 2.9 attacks per second

4.00 is 400 IAS which is the cap, if you still don't understand I will show you an example.

Agility provides +1% attack speed per point, so +55 attack speed from hyperstone would provide the same attack speed as +55 agility.

For example, Blade of Alacrity provides +10 agility meaning that's +10 IAS

Take the item mjollnir for example, it provides the highest amount of attack speed than any other item, which is +80 IAS. And since the cap is 400 you only need 5 to reach +400

Most heroes have a 1.7 Base Attack Time which gives them a max cap of 2.9 attacks per second, windrunner is the only hero with the lowest Base BAT which is 1.5 meaning when she uses Focus Fire she attacks 3.33 times per second.

Now when Alchemist uses his ultimate he can go even lower..

Level 1 Chemical Rage = 1.45 BAT and a cap of 3.45 attacks per second
Level 2 Chemical Rage = 1.30 BAT and a cap of 3.80 attacks per second
Level 3 Chemical Rage = 1.15 BAT and a cap of 4.35 attacks per second

There we have it, a max of 4.35 attacks PER SECOND. This is how he can be so deadly with the right items.

Planning Ahead

- When TO pick Alchemist -

When you want to. no seriously, just because the rest of your team picked carries doesn't mean you have to miss out on playing a hero you want to. Sure you will probably lose horribly, but it's all about practice, I don't expect you to be an imba pro like "YajairobeFromDC" (heuehehueheu jks) as soon as you finish reading this guide.

- When NOT to pick Alchemist -

Like I said above, it really doesn't matter, if you want to play him to get practice then here is what you do..

Pick Alchemist, let them know you're going full carry and steal all the farm you can from any of your bitch ass team, once you've done that congratulate yourself with a cookie and laugh like an obnoxious rich guy.

Okay okay jokes aside if you actually want to know the most reasonable time to pick Alchemist then click the spoiler tab below. Keep in mind even the most skilled players can turn a game around even when facing their hero counters. This is just a rough feel for when it would be best to play Alchemist.

- When TO pick Alchemist -

When your team has no STR type carry
Lack of AoE and dps power
Lack of any potential for lane control/harass
when you know you won't have a problem with farming

- When NOT to pick Alchemist -

When there's an anti-tank on the other team
When there is high DPS power on the other team
When you can't farm for shit (srsly, if you can't farm, then just leave)
If they will dominate your whole team early game, 0 farm + 20 deaths = GG

- Knowing your role -

I could come up with a list of potential role possibilities but that would ruin the purpose of this guide which is to go an all out attack speed/semi tankish build so I will leave you with just this..

Carry
Carry
Carry
oh did I mention CARRY?

Alchemist does not need to be played as a hard carry with buriza and satanic, in all honesty his true damage lies in his attack speed, he can proc an item ability faster then any other hero.

The thing I hate most about any game is a support that tries to last hit your creeps, you're the carry and if the support keeps taking your farm then flame the shit out of him.

Here are some useful phrases that you can use..

"Why are you taking my farm, you aren't the carry"
"wow can you stop taking my farm you aren't the fucking carry"
"keep taking my farm bro, carry us" (sarcasm)

Skill Builds

Alchemist has a hugely adjustable skillset, 2 of his spells scale depending on the enemies armor. Finding what suits you best is key, most people tend to harass alot with acid spray and others like to farm up with goblins greed. I'm going to show you my build and possible others which you may like to use, remember not build is definite on Alchemist and it can change dramatically depending on your opponents.

The Mother-In-Law
  1. Acid Spray
  2. Unstable Concoction
  3. Acid Spray
  4. Unstable Concoction / Goblins Greed
  5. Acid Spray
  6. Chemical Rage
  7. Acid Spray
  8. Unstable concoction
  9. Unstable Concoction
  10. Goblins Greed / Unstable Concoction
  11. Chemical Rage
  12. Goblins Greed
  13. Goblins Greed
  14. Goblins Greed
  15. Stats
  16. Chemical Rage

As the title implies this build is a bitch for enemies. The maxing of Acid Spray will annoy the hell out your enemies. However it does require them to be in the acid but considering its huge range it shouldn't be a problem. Go for this build if you don't want the enemy to get too much farm or just for supporting lane control. Aside from just harassing, this build is great for farming creeps, the damage that acid deals to creeps is strong enough to clear them in a few seconds. You may also want to skip a level of acid or concoction and get 1 in goblins greed to sustain a higher amount of farm. Also good for pushing.

Stun and Run

  1. Unstable Concoction
  2. Acid Spray
  3. Unstable Concoction
  4. Acid Spray / Goblins Greed
  5. Unstable Concoction
  6. Chemical Rage
  7. Unstable Concoction
  8. Acid Spray
  9. Acid Spray
  10. Goblins Greed / Acid Spray
  11. Chemical Rage
  12. Goblins Greed
  13. Goblins Greed
  14. Goblins Greed
  15. Stats
  16. Chemical Rage

A variation of the the build above, this one focuses on maxing Unstable Concoction the damage from the stun is really high if you manage to get the full duration of the shaking. However it can be quite risky because if you don't get it off in time you'll end up taking the damage yourself and the damage can be quite significant early game and may even result in your death. Can also be used to suicide if timed right. A highly offensive build. Great for ganking too.

The High-Roller

  1. Goblins Greed
  2. Acid Spray
  3. Unstable Concoction
  4. Goblins Greed
  5. Goblins Greed
  6. Chemical Rage
  7. Goblins Greed
  8. Unstable Concoction / Acid Spray
  9. Unstable Concoction / Acid Spray
  10. Unstable Concoction / Acid Spray
  11. Chemical Rage
  12. Acid Spray / Unstable Concoction
  13. Acid Spray / Unstable Concoction
  14. Acid Spray / Unstable Concoction
  15. Stats
  16. Chemical Rage

As you can see there are many possibilities in this build most of the time you would get 1 level in each skill and continue to max Goblins Greed from there. After the 4th level you can choose between Unstable Concoction and Acid Spray. I will tell you though this build is probably not the best, you could do better if you were to max Greed later, you may get a decent amount of gold in early game but in reality Greed scales terribly.

and my personal favourite..

  1. Goblins Greed
  2. Acid Spray
  3. Unstable Concoction
  4. Unstable Concoction
  5. Unstable Concoction / Acid Spray
  6. Chemical Rage
  7. Unstable Concoction
  8. Acid Spray / Unstable Concoction
  9. Acid Spray
  10. Acid Spray
  11. Chemical Rage
  12. Goblins Greed
  13. Goblins Greed
  14. Goblins Greed
  15. Stats
  16. Chemical Rage

This is the build I use, I generally take goblins greed at level 1 to get that small advantage, like I said Goblins Greed scales horribly you would only need to kill 3 more creeps to make up the difference between a level 1 Greed and a level 4 Greed. I then begin to max my Unstable Concoction the benefits outweigh the risk, and it deals a very high amount of damage early game. If you find you're getting owned by the other team in the laning phase you may want to skip a third level of Concoction and get a level in Acid to help out. This build is great all round and provides a good amount of aggressiveness.

Remember kiddos, these are builds I often see, I encourage you to experiment and see what you like, no build is pre-determined. (but if you don't use my build you'll probably get screwed over anyway)

Building Alchemist

Yes items any hero needs items to be effective, some more then others. Alchemist does not necessarily need items, but he benefits greatly from them, as do most carries.

Alchemist' build can differ, most professional players will take what enemies they are facing into account when choosing starting items, here I will list some possibilities which are recommended.

The Farmer

Explantion:
Okay simple enough, quelling blade is helpful for those of you who are not-so-good (shit) at lasthitting, the stats from ironwood branches should be self-explanatory and the tango/salve will provide sufficient regen from angry enemies.

The Defensive

Explanation:
Like the build above this build is what I tend to go for, as your opponents will just love harassing you, the stout shield helps tank enemy hits.

The Spammer

Explanation:
The ring of protection helps tank more hits since Alchemist has such low armor that extra 2 is surprisingly helpful, you can build it into a ring of basilius later if you're planning to spam your acid.
