hi, my name is jonathan aka "the other guy" from south-africa. I've been playing dota for more than 5 years now and have never once stopped enjoying this great game. Medusa has seen many nerfs and buffs over the years but has always remained a solid versiatile pick that interested me greatly. I have not seen that many guides on this hero and in the end wanted to make my own. I hope that this guide proves insightfull and helps you on your way to mastering this great hero called medusa, the gorgon.

base damage: 45 - 50
strength: 14 + 1.85
agility (primary): 22 + 2.5
intelligence: 19 + 2.25
movespeed: 300
base attack time: 1.7
attack range: 600 (ranged)
sight range: 1800 (daytime) / 800 (night time)
affiliation: Neutral agility

pros:
[+] early game lane dominance through mystic snake
[+] very hard to kill due to manashield and gaze
[+] split shot scales into the late game
cons:
[-] very mana depenant early/mid game for both her lane dominance and survivability
[-] item dependent
[-] lowest starting str in the game

as we can see from this medusa has a decent stat growth, but nothing realy extraordinary. She can last hit / deny easily and has a good attack animation. She also has quite bad starting str but this is easily cancelled out by the potensial ehp that mana shield gives you. Her int growth however is rather wierd, in that it is almost as high as her primary attribute and as such more emphasis shall be put on enhancing those two stats.

Medusa is a unique hero whose role changes as the game goes on. Early on we will focus on strengthening her already powerfull laning and increasing her survivability. From mid game onwards more focus will be put on increasing her pushing / farming and overall mobility . And finaly, late game she will take on a carry / tank / disabler / pusher route, or posibly all of them depending on what your team needs. The key to a good medusa is her versiatility and that is what we will be aiming for.

*extra information on skills can be found in the spoilers
*my advice on the usage of the skill are displayed in green
slit shot - (active, toggle, aoe-target, affects enemy units)
medusa magically splits her shot into four arrows. These arrows deal a lower percent of her normal damage.

 manacooldown rangeaoedurationeffects
100 secn/a600n/a4 arrows each 45% damage.
200 secn/a600n/a4 arrows each 55% damage.
300 secn/a600n/a4 arrows each 65% damage.
400 secn/a600n/a4 arrows each 75% damage.
  • only the primary target will recieve attack effects like bash and orb effects.
  • secondary targets will be the three closest enemy units excluding the primary target.

The strongest self damage amplifier in the game effectively giving you a 300% increase to your damage which goes even higher if you opted for a manta. Combined with some damage items turns you into a aoe monster.
- remember to regulary toggle split shot on and off depending on your number of targets for maximum effect .it is almost always better to keep it on when facing multiple targets and only deactivating it when a single target is pressent.

- when attacking creeps always go for the ranged creep first, as it guarantees you getting at least one creep kill even if you somehow did'nt kill the others.

- when farming try using split shot in conjunction with mystic snake to speed up the rate you clear creeps and gain gold. start off by having split shot turned on and attack the creeps to under half of their hp and then cast
mystic snake on them to clear the entire wave
. doing this not only alows you to clear creeps faster but also gives you a solid increase to your income.

mystic snake - (active, single-target, affects enemy units)
a mystic snake made of energy jumps from target to target dealing damage and stealing some energy. After it reaches its last target, it jumps back to medusa to replenish it with mana. The snake deals more damage and steals more mana per jump. The snake's power is increased by 20% each jump.

 manacooldown rangeaoedurationeffects
114011 sec800500n/a80 base damage, 20 base mana. 3 jumps.
215011 sec800500n/a120 base damage, 30 base mana. 4 jumps.
316011 sec800500n/a160 base damage, 40 base mana. 5 jumps.
417011 sec800500n/a200 base damage, 50 base mana. 6 jumps.
  • every time it steals mana (only happens on units with mana), the amount it steals is increased by 20% of its base value.
  • every time it damages, the damage amount is increased by 20% of its base value.
  • the damage and mana steal amounts increase independently.
  • the mystic snake moves at a speed of 633 until it is returning, at which point it moves at a speed of 833.

a good harrasing / lanecontrolling skill that needs timely use to be most effective. Replenishes your mana and acts as a minor manadrain
- mystic snake deals more damage the more bounces it makes before reaching its final target. always try hitting heroes last by counting the number of creeps they poses and nuber of bounces your spell can get to ensure that your intended targets get hit last.

- when casting mystic snake moving forward can icrease the effective range of your spell by not letting the opponent retreat into the fog. this also alows for more damage via your normal hits after the spell is cast.

- in some situations though, when dealing with a perticulary good opponent it is sometimes better to cast the snake on their ranged creep or even directly onto the hero itself to continue harrasing them. this is also more recomended early game as you push the lane less than usual.

mana shield - (active,toggle)
creates a shield that absorbs 50% of the incoming damage by using medusa's mana.

 manacooldown rangeaoedurationeffects
1010 secn/an/an/aabsorbs 0.75 damage per point of mana.
2010 secn/an/an/aabsorbs 1.25 damage per point of mana.
3010 secn/an/an/aabsorbs 1.5 damage per point of mana.
4010 secn/an/an/aabsorbs 2 damage per point of mana.
  • absorbs damage before any damage reduction takes place, meaning that armor will not reduce the amount of mana needed to absorb damage.

a simple ehp increasing skill that scales throughout the whole game. While active reduces any damage dealt to you as long as you have mana.
- when laning, try having mana shield turned off as much as possible unless you expect a gank. enemy units harassing you when you have it turned on needlesly reduces your mana which could be crucial when you actualy need it.

- when using manta your mana shield is deactivated requiring you to manualy toggle it on again, however sometimes it can be more effective to leave it unactivated to not draw unwanted attention to the real medusa.

stone gaze - (active, instant)
any enemy units staring at the gorgon will slowly turn to stone, removing status buffs and slowing all speed properties. Deals more damage to summoned units per level.

 manacooldownrangeaoedurationeffects
110035 secn/a800n/aslow attacks by a factor 2, stops movement. Deals 600 damage to illusions and summoned units.
25035 secn/a800n/aslow attacks by a factor 3, stops movement. Deals 800 damage to illusions and summoned units.
3035 secn/a800n/aslow attacks by a factor 5, stops movement. Deals 1000 damage to illusions and summoned units.
  • affects any units that have line of sight with medusa at any period during 0.6 seconds after cast.

aoe slow and debuff that requires its targets to be facing the gorgon. Useful for delaying pushes, limiting damage dealt by dps carries and removing any beneficial buffs enemies poses.
- when casting stone gaze do remember that enemies need to face you but you do not have to face them. this also makes stone gaze an invaluable escaping tool early on in the game.

- when getting ganked, casting stone gaze after your enemies have casted their spells as opposed to before they cast it can allow you a larger window of time to escape while their spells are on cooldown.
