Welcome to my Visage guide! This is my first guide. Seeing as how everyone seems to be confused about the new Visage, I wrote this hoping it would help. The replays are EXTREMELY important to playing Visage - they truly show how powerful of a hero Visage actually is. Be sure to watch one to see what exactly I mean by dominating lanes.

A huge part of this guide is your comments - I don't know what I missed, so please ask me anything that I missed. If you have a problem with the reasoning, please address that too.

First off - probably the most important:

Caution:

DO NOT pick Visage if the opposing team has

Kunkka - Tidebringer
Bristleback - Quill Spray
Centaur - Thorns
Axe - Counter Helix

All of these have physical, "spammable" AoE damage skills that will DESTROY your bats if you try to use them. They make being Visage so much harder.
(It's still possible though - watch the replay with Bristleback at the end of the guide)

Doom - Doom

Visage's power in all fights rely on his spells. The bats in this case will be your only source of damage, which is maybe 200 after reduced by armor. Not worth it at all.

DO NOT pick Visage if your team mates:
-do not listen to you
-are afraid to initiate when you can clearly win
-feed

Pick Visage:
-if you want to demolish a lane
-if you want to demolish more lanes
-if you want your lane partner to be at a very good advantage
-if you can micro at the skill of Lina or Lion
(hotkeys, point, and click)

Onto Visage!!

Introduction

Strength
25 + 2.2

Agility
11 + 1.3

Intelligence
21 + 2.5

Stat gain

Amazing strength gain for all heroes, let alone for intelligence heroes
Terrible agility gain
Great intelligence gain

Other stuff found on the site:

* Attack Animation: 0.46 / 0.54
* Damage: 45-55
* Casting Animation: 0.4 / 1.1
* Armor: 0.5
* Base Attack Time: 1.7
* Movespeed: 295
* Missile Speed: 900
* Attack Range: 600
* Sight Range: 1800 / 800

Skills

Grave Chill - Main chasing/"disabling" skill

Single target
CD - 10
Duration - 3, 4, 5, 6
Effect - 32% drain on target MS and AS and 32% gain on MS and AS
Mana Cost - 70, 80, 90, 100

Can be cast on creeps.
If dispelled on you, the enemy is still slowed.
If dispelled on the enemy, you are still fast.

*I call it disabling because it's crucial to the long term use of all your skills. It allows you to use three soul assumptions rather than just one on a fleeing hero.

Soul Assumption - Lvl 1 Dagon with a 4 CD at level 7??? (20 + 360 = 380...)
CD - 4
Damage - 20 + 60 x charges
Max charges - 3, 4, 5, 6
Mana Cost - 100
Every 110 damage taken by heroes within a 1200 AoE of Visage adds a counter.
Counters last for 6 seconds.

Towers don't count toward counters.

Gravekeeper's Cloak - Interesting "tank" skill
4 layers always
Regain every (14, 12, 10, 8 seconds)
Each layer armor - 2, 4, 6, 8
Each layer magic resistance - 4%, 8%, 12%, 16%
Lose a layer each hit from a hero

Summon Familiars- A very fixed ultimate with a moderate stun
CD on bats - 160
HP - 300, 400, 500
Mana Cost - 150
CD on Stone Form - 30 seconds
CD in Stone Form - 8 seconds
Stun - 1, 1.25, 1.5
Damage - 72, 90, 108
*Decreases each hit by 12, 15, 18

*They fly
*You can use boots of traveling to the familiars.
*Familiars aren't affected by hooks or arrows
*Give 100 gold when killed

Special - Find them stuck in stone form but need them? Resummon the bats!

What's this mean?
-You can stone form again (WHAT 6 SEC STUN AT LVL 3????... if optimized, yes)
-Bats have full attack damage

Careful, the cooldown is 4 minutes.

KEY
Keep your bats available at all times
-Number them
1 = Visage
2 = Bats
3 = Visage and bats

-Keep them ready to do something (close enough that they don't feed - that is, over impassable terrain or where heroes don't generally walk)
-A very good example of this is in the replay. Watch how in lane I keep them over the trees. They're meant for hero killing, not creep killing.
-Great for CHASING, not scouting. They can keep vision on fleeing enemy heroes while they run. They're also great for killing weak heroes - They can generally kill any hero under 200 hp.

Skill build -

1 Cloak
2 Assumption/Chill
3 Assumption
4 Chill/Assumption
5 Assumption
6 Familiars
7 Assumption
8-25 Max Chill, then Cloak. Take Familiars when possible. Finish with stats.

Common Skill Build Discrepancies

Why cloak first?
Cloak is the reason why you can be "freer" in lane. It starts off with 16% magic resistance and 8 armor. Anyone who "tries" to first blood you will be met with huge initial defenses - this is usually enough to run or regroup. Cloak also gives you a huge advantage over opponents in lane in terms of harassing and last hitting.
-You can harass while suffering MUCH less damage from creeps (cloak isn't affected by creeps)
-You have more room to get closer to creeps so that if the opponent does try to hit you it'll aggro your own creeps

Why not chill first?
Personally I feel 3 seconds to run is barely anything. If the opponents do try to first blood you in the beginning, it'll be with stuns - you can't move when you're stunned. Cloak allows you to tank most of the damage.

Why not chill second?
I guess it's "viable," but I prefer going assumption purely because of it's sheer power. (260 damage nuke at level 2??)
Besides, if the enemy does try to kill you, they'll add charges to assumption, making it easier for you to kill them.

Items:

Starting -

2x Ironwood branch
1x Ring of Regeneration
1x Tangos

Regeneration is great with cloak (longer time staying in lane) Tangos for faster regeneration when needed (generally when the opponent uses a spell)
Ironwood branches for stats and later for Mekansm

Core:

Power Treads (Strength)
Mekansm

That's it?

Yes

Treads to be explained.
Mek is just perfect:
-gives Visage more presence in team fights
-gives Visage more time to survive
-perfect upgrade from RoR
-Visage has the mana for it
-bats benefit from it too

Core Discrepancies

Treads over Travels?
-Treads can be obtained so much earlier *KEY
-Treads give very good strength necessary for chasing and tanking (to an extent) early game
-Treads can be obtained completely from the side shop

Argument:
Travels is great for mobility which Visage needs

Answer:
True, but...
Math ahead~

Treads price = 450 + 500 + 500 = 1450
Travels price = 500 + 2200 = 2700
-Carry TP scrolls
If instead you get two bracers to compensate for strength, you'll be using (150 + 185 + 175)*2 = 1020
Plus the price for difference between treads and travels (2700 - 1450) = 1250
So 1250 + 1020 = 2270

2270 / 135 = (price difference in getting travels over phase / price of TP scrolls) = 16.8...

(I realize I left out the extra +2 stat points in strength and +6 in both agility and intelligence with the travels method. To be fair, incorporate also the +AS from treads. Take maybe 300 gold off the total difference between the travels and treads method because of the stat points)

Travels becomes the better choice after 16+ TP scrolls.
Travels takes an extra space.
You already have enough chasing power with Grave Chill.

Treads over Phase?
This decision is harder and based on personal preference.
I prefer treads because of the strength gain.
Phase could be argued for better MS and chasing, but Visage's AS is already extremely low because of his agility.
Whichever you choose, but I like treads.

Extension 1 (support oriented):

< > --> http://www.playdota.com/img/items/120/icon.jpg
Dagon<and>Hood of Defiance -> Pipe
Whichever is needed first...
then take extension 2
Notes:
1 is complete support
Take this if you personally are having trouble.
This is so that you have some use late game.

Extension 2 (chasing/support oriented):
< >
Eul's<and>Dagon
Whichever needed first...
then take extension 1
Notes:

Extension 2 maxes your early-mid game potential with the extra burst and disable.

2 is my favorite.
Grave chill (6 seconds)
Bat stun 1 - 1.5s
Bat stun 2 - 1.5s
Eul's - 2s
Grave chill is up again

Why Dagon?
More burst
Helps maximize your early game power while providing a decent late game nuke
*Dagon is NOT hard to micro with - click and point. With Chill, there should be no problem in targeting and chasing.

Extension 3 (DPS oriented):
OR
Stygian
OR
Mjollnir

Notes:

Extension 3 is extremely situational:
These items are good on paper, but their use will be limited because of Visage's low attack speed and base damage.

Mjollnir = lightning strikes while in grave chill
*Do not use static charge on yourself; you are not supposed to take hits

Stygian = extra damage from bats and allies

Extension 4 (Micro oriented):

Necromicon

4 theoretically synchronizes:
Movement speed+
True Sight(situational +)
More damage
I have never tried this, but it seems like it might work. Micro becomes a little more intensive too.

Situational

Ring of Basilius
-if your team doesn't have one

--> Vladmir's Offering
-if your team doesn't have someone who would get it and your team has a lot of melee

Blademail
-if the team has an atrocious carry you weren't able to take care of
-decent for damage, intelligence, and armor; basically everything what Visage needs
-generally you do not what to be the targeted hero - you shouldn't need this

Luxury - if the game lasts this long, something is wrong

Assault Cuirass
+Huge amounts of armor (have some "natural" armor - remember, your natural armor is terrible because of low agility and low base armor.
+Great aura (more support)
+Goes well if you went Mjollnir
-No gain in real HP

Guinsoo
+Disabling power (which does synchronize with all of your skills and your team)
-Would be core, except it's too expensive and gives no survivability

Skadi
-Extremely expensive with a bad buildup
+stats
+chasing

Shiva's Guard
+armor
+decrease enemy attack speed
+decrease enemy movement speed
+burst

Orchid Malevolence
I hesitate to put this get this on any intelligence hero because of its lack of survivability. However, Visage has great hp gain.
+silence
+mana
+mana regen

This should only be made if your team desperately needs the silence - the extra mana can be obtained from Eul's buildup instead.

Radiance
You truly aren't supposed to stay in the middle of the fight.
This item is EXTREMELY situational.
Notes:

Why you would get it:
+chasing power
+good way to rack up charges
+surplus gold

Why you wouldn't get it:
-expensive
-no boost to hp or mana
-delays other items
-doesn't scale well to late game

Notes on Survivability Boosters

Get these if you find yourself dying in skirmishes and team fights. You should not aim to create these as you should not be the main receiver of damage anyway. Otherwise, you're fine with the survivability you already have.

Rejected Items

...
And anything carries usually get. Your Agility gain is terrible. They won't help.

Ethereal Blade
Terrible, terrible buildup for Visage. Agility is wasted and his natural agi gain is extremely low. Visage shouldn't DPS at all. Yes, the ethereal helps, but use the extra money to upgrade dagon instead...

Best partners:
*Make sure to have one as your lane partner!

I'm going to stop here, otherwise I'd be listing more than half of the heroes.

Any hero with a stun or slow
+double points if the hero can carry
+double points if the hero also has a nuke

Honorable mentions to Sven and Vengeful Spirit
*Best lane partners with Visage
-Instants stuns with great damage
-Relatively independent
-Make a difference in the team

How to play Visage

Points to remember:
Visage is not a carry
Visage gains all of his power at level 7 with maxed assumption

Early game -

You solo...

the creep pull lane while your partner creep pulls.
(Bottom as Sentinel, Top as Scourge)

Reasons:

-You should not carry
-Soul Assumption is based on net hero damage (more heroes the better)
-You have no insta-stun (your stun takes time)
-You have amazing independence in lane - true, you have no creep netting skill, but you should be by your tower most of the time because of your partner making it easier to last hit
-You can net so many kills early game when you outlevel your opponents
*Remember to share the kills with your partner when possible

Dual laning in the short lane is possible except leveling takes longer. Also, you don't get the advantage of creep pulling and ganking from the forest.

Soloing middle with Visage is silly. Hero-to-Hero damage output is generally in long term periods. Visage gains so much more versatility in a dual lane.

Stay in lane and get treads as soon as possible. Be aggressive in last hitting. Harass freely (remember, creeps barely damage you because of cloak).
When soul assumption is at least level 2, you can try to net a kill. Whenever your partner is ready with a stun, stun the enemy hero, and unleash all your of spells. Assumption only when it's at full charges.
(watch the replay; this is not overconfidence - you'll get what I mean)

If you don't have a kill by level 6, get your familiars, and then net one.

Mathcraft with level 7 assumption assuming 1 hit by each of the bats

Partner stun damage - 200
Bats - 76 x 2 = 152
Your attack - 60 x 4 = 240 (2 while the enemy is stunned, 2 while chasing)
Soul Assumption - 380 x 2 = 760 (1 max from the initial stuns and hits, the other while chasing)
Others:
More bat attacks (enemy is stunned and slowed, free hits)
Stone form damage (minimal, but helps)
Partner physical attacks

(Others not incorporated)
Inflated damage: 1352+
Real damage assuming .25 reduction on everything: 1014+

Have fun demolishing early game.

Early-Mid game
If your partner completely outlevels the opponent(s), follow path one.
If you and your partner are on par with the opponents, follow path two.
If you and your partner somehow did badly early game, prepare for a bad ending. Go complete support and take path two with caution.

Path One:
Push the first tower.
Gank. Help the other lanes. Kill their carry as much as possible. You still have early game potential.

Path Two:

Keep with early game strategy except outlevel them as soon as possible and try to dominate the lane.
Follow path one as soon as your partner is independent.

Mid Game:
Gank. Push towers. Use whatever power you have left in helping your carry and demolishing the other team. Buy wards.

Late Game:
You are now an intelligence hero in late game.
Stay alive. Buy wards. Participate in team fights.

How to team fight:

Major point - stay alive - YOU HAVE TO
Ready for easy microing?

1. Target their carry with all of your units (hero and bats)

2. Grave chill their carry

*note - team fights should make assumption stay on full charges
3a. Soul assumption the weakest hero
3b. Soul assumption their carry

4a. Your bats should have no power left - stone form them.
4b. An enemy hero is using a channeling spell - use a stone form on it.
4c. Your bats still have power - keep attacking

---Soul assumption again, and again, and again... etc.

5. Repeat until the fight is over.

*Mek when necessary
*Eul when the opponents start to run
*If the carry is not present, pick any hero

5 steps, all take less than a second each.
Learn your hotkeys - they're easy.
C - assumption
G - chill
F - stone form

Key to Using Stone Form

Stone form is a very hard skill to use and master.
There is a 1 second delay from the time you hit F for stone form before the bats turn invulnerable and actually stun.
*Even if the bat dies as it is changing, the stun will STILL occur.

Uses of Stone Form
-general stun
-breaks channeling
-regenerate bats
-minor magical damage

The optimal way to use stone form is to maximize the time a hero spends within stun.
At level 1 with only a 1 second stun, that is EXTREMELY hard. If you feel that you can't handle it, use one bat right after the other; you won't be too far off.
Level 2 and 3 are a bit more challenging. If you can't handle it continue using one after the other. Optimizing time here makes more sense. Try to count to quickly count to three right after you use your first bat and then use the other one.

Creeping

Each stone form does 100, 125, or 150 magical damage at levels 1, 2, and 3, respectively.
It's the closest thing you have to a farming skill. Note, two level three stone forms will not kill the mage creeps.

Isolation
-When you've died and your bats are left alone, it's easier to micro them

If your team is chasing, make sure to stone form in front of the enemy hero

Team Fights
Use stone form as soon as the damage wears off

Chasing
It's actually MUCH easier to use stone form when you're chasing because you have the advantage of Grave Chill. Still, stone form in FRONT of the enemy hero.

Fleeing
Using stone form on heroes chasing you to cut them off.

Conclusion

I'm basically done. But I'll answer some upcoming comments...

Frequently Asked Questions and Frequently Made Comments

"Visage bats are feed. Over 100 gold each - he's terrible."
Don't feed with your bats but keep them nearby.
If you stone form them, make sure to move them as soon as they get out of the form.
Watch how in lane I keep them over the trees. They aren't meant for creep killing, they're meant for hero killing.
C'mon...
Hero damage.
Decreasing power with each hit.

"I miss the old Visage."
Personally, I played the old visage before he got popular. I know what you mean - he was fun too. But remember, he had a different role. The old Visage could not at all dominate early game like the new one.
I hope the new Visage stays. If IceFrog does bring back the old one, I hope it's as part of a different hero. I like the new one - I really do.

"Why not use the bats for scouting?"
Very small sight radius, can't do any damage away from you...
However, they are very good for chasing and keeping a sight radius on a hero. If you die, you can use your bats to keep track of fleeing heroes. They're also great for quick rune checks and rosh checks.

"I keep running out of mana..."
Visage is very mana intensive, but his pool should be able to support it. If you have trouble, get Eul's ASAP, especially that staff of wizardry.
Don't ever be afraid to go for more than one item at once...
I would not recommend switching to intelligence treads. You need the strength too much.

"What about heroes with huge magic resistance? Hood! Magina! Pudge!"
Hood is a very, very big problem. It reduces your net damage by about 20%. However, if your enemies get hood...
A) they lose time for other times and take another item spots
B) they don't improve their physical reduction (your carry and bats)
C) you still damage them a considerable amount

"I keep dying as Visage."
Play more defensive. Remember, you cannot initiate.

"I have +30 armor! Why don't you call me a tank?"
A) It'll go away in 4 hits.
B) Natural armor is terrible.
C) You can't do anything stunned
D) Surviving is key to Visage - more nukes the better; his damage output is amazing

"Visage needs a lot of micro, right?"
No.
Reasons in spoiler

Let's count the key strokes
3 --> right click on enemy hero
G --> left click
C --> left click
right click on the enemy hero
C--> left click... etc etc.
*repeat

If you have items like Eul's and Dagon,
+1 click for Eul's
+1 click for Dagon

Max clicks for a cycle: maybe 10 if you can use soul assumption 5 times.
Simple pointing and clicking.

Try not to let your fingers run loose, ok?

"Should I level dagon?"
I'd say yes. Visage is very item independent after his core. Leveling dagon eases mana pressure and decreases cool down. More burst, more times, and more spells!

Final words:
You can 1v1 many heroes early game. The bats themselves give charges.
Don't be afraid to tower dive while ganking: you have gravekeeper's cloak which does not lose charges from the tower.
Take advantage of your team's lead.
Remember, after level 7, you won't become inherently stronger. Try to finish the game as soon as possible.
Visage is a great gem carrier. Get one if you need.
Visage is a male.

Replays:

Finally, the replay section! No guide can TRULY show Visage's power. The best way to learn it is to see it. To finish this guide, please watch one of the replays. It's the best way to understand Visage.

Most recent one. I got Dagon in this one, but by that time, the game was basically over. This one shows Visage and Slardar against a Warlock-Troll lane. Troll ended up leaving within 15 mins. This one is for its early game.
http://www.playdota.com/forums/20111...ge/#post929841

This one is more recent. It's TDA. Visage against Bristleback, even in lane, ugh!
http://www.playdota.com/forums/178003/visage-top-lane/

This one is when I first started playing Visage. You can tell there's a lot of silly mistakes, but overall gameplay is fine.
http://www.playdota.com/forums/164948/visage-wonderful/

I hope to get more recent replays where I can show you Dagon's advantage.
