Shendelzare Silkwood
The Vengeful Spirit

Introduction
This is my very first guide. This guide does not focus on Vengeful being a DPS hero but focuses more on being a ganker/support hero. I’ve chosen to create a guide for her, hoping that it would help others play her as a support and not as a carry.

Shendelzare Silkwood is a great offensive-support to the team since she can increase the team’s total DPS and at the same time weaken the opposing team. She is a very effective ganker because she has a skill that can immediately isolate one opponent for an easy focus fire. Paired with another stunner, she can provide good lane control. She is also played as a roamer.

This is your main nuke and disable. It is a good skill for harassing your opponents early to mid game and good for ganking since it deals a huge amount of damage and gives a sure stun. This skill has the highest damage for a single target stun.

This is your free Assault Cuirass combined with Diffusion Aura (Necrolyte’s old skill). This skill is good for removing fog/unexplored areas especially when chasing heroes/checking neutrals/runes since it travels a distance of 1400 and gives site to the area it has travelled upon. It’s a good support skill since it reduces armor and damage of all units it has travelled on. It is mostly used for lowering heroes DPS during ganks and team battles. With the change in 6.60, this can now deal damage, but not that significant.

This skill is what makes you one hell of a ganker and is the main reason why she is chosen in a game. It has a maximum range of 1200 which is good for chasing enemy heroes to position them easily near your teammates. Swap is mostly used to immediately isolate and take out one hero in a team battle. It is also good for saving your some of your allies from a gank.

18 - 25 - Attribute Bonus

Magic Missile: This is gotten at level 1 since it is your nuke in a form of a disable. It will help a lot if your team plans to do a level 1 gank. On the other hand, it can also save you from it. It is also your main source of harassment during the early game hence, must be maxed out immediately.

Wave of Terror: Taking 3 levels of this after maxing out Magic Missile and getting a level of Nether Swap is because this is the time wherein you would start your ganking phase. The -4 Armor, -15% Damage and 75 Damage helps greatly in weakening your enemies during ganking. It is also used to provide sight of area not seen by Observer Wards.

Command Aura: We won’t be getting this early on because you don’t want to be pushing that fast and since it only amplifies damage based on base damage + primary stat, Vengeful’s team won’t utilize the % Damage bonus early on. This is learned after getting 2 levels of Nether Swap because it gives a good boost in DPS for your team (especially the carry) during mid game. With the buff of it's AoE, there will be chances that your team can still benefit even after you swap someone (as long as you are alive).

Nether Swap: This skill must be learned whenever possible. The main reason why you pick Vengeful Spirit is because of this skill. Nether Swap is what makes you a very good ganker because you are able to easily get enemy heroes from afar and position them near your teammates for a kill. This skill can also save your ally whenever they are ganked. Skipping it will make you less efficient in ganking and/or saving an ally.

Attribute Bonus: Getting only 2 levels is just enough to give you more survivability  in laning and enough mana to land some harassing stuns or finishing stuns. With the increase in her STR growth in 6.60, the 2 levels of Attribute Bonus is just enough to give her enough HP.

Item Build

STARTING ITEMS
Bottle: Bottle provides you good HP and Mana regen early game which can help you survive in a lane at the same time spam your nuke. This is most likely gotten as a first item if you play with her as a roamer. If there is someone else in your team who is much better in being a roamer, get the other item build first.

OR

Ancient Tango of Essifation: Helps you survive your lane longer and it will provide you minor HP regeneration so you can stay safe from some light harassment.

Clarity Potion: This will be your main item for mana regen until you get your bottle. You always need to have mana for your stun as it can help you from escape a gank or it can help you get a first blood.

Circlet of Nobility/Ironwood branch: Stats is good early on, this item gives you some hp, mana and damage which can help you in last hitting. The circlet is also used for bracer later on.

Observer Wards: It is Silkwood’s job to be the team's ward bitch. This is bought because it helps you control the runes better, and help you avoid a gank during the early game phase.
CORE ITEMS

Item Build Order:
Bottle >> 2x Bracers >> Boots >> TP Scrolls

Bottle: Silkwood has 1 nuke she can spam and it has a pretty high mana cost. Bottle solves this. She is a ganker type hero with her Swap and Stun making the bottle a good source of burst hp/mana regen. She can also be pretty good at rune-whoring.

Bracers: A cheap hp/stat booster for venge especially since she is a very fragile hero. This item could help her survive the game and some ganks more. You can replace 1 bracer for 1 null if you think that you’re having problems with mana, which is doubtful since she has a decent INT gain for an AGI hero.

Boots: Silkwood has a poor starting MS so getting Boots early is smart. She needs it too so she could chase well. Even though you already have Swap for chasing enemy heroes, a swap at level 1 has a pretty short range and with magic missile having a 500 casting range.

Observer/Sentry Wards: I’ve said it above and I will say it again: Silkwood is a Ward Bitch; it is her job to supply her team wards. Observer wards also help her gank better since it helps you Swap better during the ganking phase. Wards help you control the whole map better. Sentry is whenever you face invisible heroes like Riki/Gondar/Clinkz.

TP Scrolls: Always carry TP scrolls in case some other lane needs help in ganking. It can also give you a quick trip to the fountain whenever you’re low on hp and can’t find a rune to refill your bottle.
EXTENSION/LUXURY ITEMS
Phase Boots: This is pretty much the best upgrade of boots you can get. It gives you armor for increased EHP and a little damage for some DPS whenever you gank. It gives you good chasing capabilities with the +70 MS and Phase. If you want to swap someone and you can’t cast it because creeps are blocking your path, use phase or if you swapped some hero and got stuck between creeps phase away. Why not Power Treads/Boots of Travel? Sure, treads give IAS and some stats too boot, but you won’t need it as much as you need the ability Phase boots give. As for Travel, she has pretty poor income due to hardcore ganking and ward bitching. And you won’t be utilizing the Teleportation well since VS is not very good in defending towers from waves of creeps.

Diffusal Blade: Purge. This is mostly the reason why heroes get Diffusal. It gives a sure slow which will make you more efficient in ganking together with your swap and stun. The purge is also pretty good when you have someone like Sven, Brood or Warlock in the opposing team as it renders their Ultimates useless. It also gives good AGI which can be amplified by Command Aura for a further increase in your damage and INT for further increase in your mana pool. If your charges run out, you can just buy the recipe to upgrade it to get 8 charges again and a further increase in AGI and INT.

Yasha: A cheap MS booster. Together with Phase Boots, you'll have no problem running around the map and little problem in chasing heroes. An alternative upgrade of your Blade of Alacrity if you're having a hard time getting your Diffusal. It can also be obtained after getting your Diffusal since it gives a good MS and IAS boost which you can utilize later in the game.

Manta Style: The better upgrade you can get from Yasha (Sange and Yasha is the other upgrade). You can get this if you have Yasha and the game drags on too long since farming for 2100 is nearly impossible for a ganker like her unless you're playing in pubs or such. It gives more survivability in team battles as it gives you +10 STR (190 HP) and 2 illusions which can confuse your foes after swapping someone. It also provides good DPS in ganks which is almost the same as ganking with 4 heroes (if you have an ally with you).
OTHER ITEMS
Hood of Defiance: Though it doesn't give you armor and HP, the 30% spell damage reduction is a pretty big thing. This item can give you a good chance of surviving if there are nukers in the other team.

Mekansm: A good support item and it gives good stats, good HP regen, good armor and an AoE heal. You can get this if you can farm for it AND if you think you can survive in a clash AND if no one else in your team is getting it. Otherwise if someone in your team is getting it, skip it.

Khadgar's Pipe of Insight: If you have Hood, you can upgrade it to this. This is almost as good as Mekansm (if you have nukers in the other team) since a barrier that absorbs 400 spell damage is like giving your team a 400 HP pre-heal. This is good because your allies can benefit from it even before you do a swap; the 8 seconds is a pretty long duration since most clashes occur in less than 15 or 20 seconds. You can get this if no one in your team is getting it and if does not go in the way of your ganking/warding.

Stygian Desolator: OMG!! You already have Feedback! Why get another orb effect!? Sure, having 2 orb effects is fail, but you don’t really get Diffusal for the Feedback, you get it for the purge. The 60 damage that Deso gives is good and the Corruption, together with Terror, reduces the enemy’s armor by 11. This does not only benefit you, but also your teammates since it is good for giving more DPS to your team.

Aghanim's Scepter: This is viable item on her. It can be good if you can survive after swapping, otherwise if you die after doing a Swap, better not get it because it would be a waste. The 10 sec CD is useful if you can utilize it well, meaning you focus solely on ganking and you are able to survive after doing swaps. Its not that bad of an item, unless you rush it and don't consider your survivability.
Note: Remember that if you have played VS right, meaning ganks, ward bitching and more ganks, you won’t have that much of an income so getting Manta and Desolator is pretty much impossible, especially when you’re playing in a decent game where pushing and ganking is top priority. And if ever the game drags on too long, this would be the best extension/luxury items for her.

REJECTED ITEMS
Lothar’s Edge: Most pub players use this so they can Swap, WW, run towards the swapped opponent then Stun or run away so they can be safe. This item may provide survivability due to WW, but can easily be countered by Sentry Wards and/or Dust. You can use it to chase heroes but you already have Phase Boots for that matter. It costs 3610 gold and does nothing to help you in ganking. It’s better to get Diffusal for that amount of gold which costs 3300.

Sange and Yasha: It provides good IAS/MS for chasing and Str/Agi for survivability and damage, but the slow it gives is very unreliable with only 15% chance of occurring on attack and VS is not very good at that with her poor Agi growth. Not to mention the price, VS is poor at farming due to ganking and warding, and if ever you’re farming just to get this, you’re being inefficient since you should gank often. Phase boots already gives you enough chasing capabilities. Getting Diffusal is much better since the slow is very reliable and helps more in ganking because you don’t really need to attack in order to proc a slow, not to mention that it’s a lot cheaper.

Assault Cuirass: Some people might think that reducing the other team’s armor by 16 (Terror + AC + Deso) is good but getting AC for that reason is very lame. It might give your team some buffs such as +5 armor and +15% IAS, but for 6k gold, these bonuses are mediocre. And farming for it only reduces your ganking efficiency. You can get Desolator or Manta Style for that Price.

Vanguard: It gives good bonuses for survivability, but it only gives 22 more HP than Bracers and costs twice as much. You already have 2 Bracers and 5 levels of stats to cover up your survivability. Also, you won’t be tanking creeps and it won’t be her job to tower dive just to chase heroes. Even though you have swap, you don't usually swap when near the tower, unless it's a sure kill.
General Strategy

EARLY GAME

Starting
After getting Vengeful as your hero, buy the starting items, and learn Magic Missile as your first skill and hopefully your team gets another disabler/slower who can lane with you. VS can go to any lane, and if you’re planning on going mid, make sure you have another stunner with you.  If it spawns in that area, put it in your bottle if you opted for bottle as your first item or just get it (to prevent the other team from obtaining it) then plant the Observer Wards you have so it can give sight to that area, this will help you control the runes better during the early game and help you avoid early ganks. This is a common spot for scouting the runes wit Observer Wards at top rune (left) and bottom rune (right). Here is a link for more warding spots:

Laning
Solo – Soloing is not her job. She does not have the capability to handle it as she only has one nuke with her; her starting HP is low and with the low range, she’s very easy to harass. You should leave soloing to heroes who are able to do it.

BUT, if for some reason, you need to go solo (mostly happens in pub games), what you should do is play safe, do some last hits/denies, and harass with Magic Missile. If you find yourself facing a a dual lane, do some creep blocking so you could stay near your tower, and always stay near the ranged creep to get some experience hopefully you could get some last hits. If you have mana and have enough level on Magic Missile, you can harass with it since it deals massive damage early game. If you are soloing mid, it would be of great advantage to you if you could control the runes, because this way, you could harass more with Magic Missile. And being at mid would also give you easier access to top and bottom lanes which helps in ganking.

Dual Lane – It is preferable that VS lanes with a disabler/slower so your stuns will become more effective. Focus on last hitting (if you’re with someone who needs the gold more, give it to them), denying creeps and harassing your opponents; remember that Animation-Cancel will help you do this better. Since it would be your job placing wards, especially near the runes during the early game, you should have no problem controlling the runes. If you already have your bottle and the rune is on your side, get it. Otherwise, tell your ally to get it.

In a lane, you can initiate a stun, and then let your ally stun/disable/slow next or vice-versa, though it’s better if you initiate first since you can spam Magic Missile more at early levels with its low mana cost. If you’re laning against the carry, always pick on them so they won’t be able to farm that much. Otherwise, pick on the softer hero so you could dominate your lane more.

If you happen to be in the long lane (Sentinel Bottom/Scourge Top), and you think your creeps have already pushed too far near the enemy territory, you could do some creep pulling. Some advantages of creep pulling are: more experience for your ally, less experience for the opposing heroes, more gold for you. Here are 3 simple screenshots on how to creep pull at Sentinel bottom lane. Take note of the time.

MID GAME

Ganking
Since it would be Silkwood’s job to buy and plant wards, there should be little problem in finding and ganking enemy heroes especially if you have Wave of Terror. Your main target/priority in ganking should be the carry heroes to cripple their farming so that when late game comes, it would be easier for your team to take on the carry. If not, target the secondary carries or the support heroes since it would minimize their effectiveness in team battles.

In ganks, it would be your job to initiate with Nether Swap, since it can target enemies from afar. Then follow it up with a stun/terror, but if you’re with an ally with a disable, you can let him do the follow up stun/disable so you can cast terror. If you already have Diffusal, it would make your ganks almost impossible to escape because of Purge. If the enemy you’re ganking has Wind Walk/Invisibility skill, don’t forget to drop Sentry Wards or use Dust of Appearance to lessen their chances of escaping. If you already have the Command Aura skill, be sure to get near your allies after using Swap so that your allies can utilize the additional damage.
Escaping Ganks/Saving Yourself
If you have been ganked and have allies that are going to help you, swap your ally who can tank or do some mass disabling [Crixalis, Magnus, Raigor, Rooftrellen, etc.] so you could remain safe. This way, you can also turn over ganks to your team’s advantage. An example is this:

Saving Allies
In a game, it’s not always your team that does the ganking, there would be times that the opposing team would be ganking too. If ever that you’re near the area where your ally is being ganked, and you have FULL HP and have your Ulti, don’t hesitate to use Nether Swap on them so you could let them escape, then stun the disabler/nuker then Phase away (this will only work if you have Phase Boots). Otherwise, if you think that you and your ally would both die when you use Swap, just stay away from the gank, you wouldn't want to feed the other team more.
Runes
Invisibility – This is prolly the best power-up on her because it can offer a surprise attack (without using swap). It can also be used as a Wind Walk whenever there’s a clash. How? After swapping, use Bottle to activate the invi rune. Even though it has a fade time, some of the first few attacks might hit you but it can still save your ass.

Haste – This is the second best power-up on her since she can chase heroes very well. Useful when the hero you are ganking is able to escape.

Regeneration – This is good when laning because you need to spam your stun in order to harass more. It is also used if you are low on HP and Mana after a gank.

Double Damage – This is also good since it gives a good increase in DPS when ganking which will help your team kill faster in ganks. But if there are other heroes that can utilize DD more, give it to them.

Illusion – This is quite useful for tricking enemy heroes. It can also provide additional DPS when ganking.
Pushing/Defending
Use Wave of Terror to weaken creeps/heroes to lessen the threat to your team. Swap a hero from the other team so that your team could take out that hero with ease. If the hero you swapped is killed, you’ve done your job. Here is a short info on using Nether Swap in clashes/team battles:
Who to swap
In clashes/team battles, your main target for Nether Swap should be the carry hero, since the carry is the one who gives great threat to the team come late game. If the carry hero is not available, you can swap the disabler/nuker/support so that your carry would worry less about being disabled/heavily damaged during clashes it may also help the clash end faster.
Who NOT to swap
The tank. Why? If you swap the tank, it would take too long to take them out, and your allies might end up using all their skills.
The initiator. Why oh why would you swap initiators? If you did, you just helped them do their job of mass disabling and mass damaging your team. What you could do is prevent them from getting near your allies by swapping the carry/disabler/support then stunning the initiator. Never EVER swap an initiator in a team battle as it would only spell early doom to your team.

If it so happened that you are still alive and kicking after swapping one hero (which rarely happens..), try your best to get near your teammates so that they could benefit from your Aura. If there are invisible heroes on the opposing team, don’t forget to place the Sentry Wards in certain places so you could see them. Also, if you are pushing, place the Observer Wards in the side of the lanes to know when the opposing team is attacking.
Ward Spots for Pushing
Some screenshots of spots where you can place your Observer Wards during PUSHING. Putting them in these spots can help you see if the other team is preparing for a counter-push.
Vengeful is good with these types of heroes as it can help chain disables which is pretty much the best way to dominate a lane. These types of heroes also help Vengeful gank better.

Ezalor and Rylai
Both of these heroes help Vengeful in spamming her Magic Missile at the same it can help in controlling a lane. With Rylai, ganks can be pulled off with ease because of Frostbite and Frost Nova.

Kunkka and Purist
These heroes can help Vengeful in swapping without dying. This mostly happens in ganks but not in team battles, since Kunkka’s XMTS must be used for escaping enemy heroes and Purist’s Repel must be used on the team’s carry.

Armor Reducers
Wave of Terror + Amplify Damage + Weave is very great in ganks and clashes as it lowers the opposing heroes’ armors which makes them easier to kill with DPS.

Bad Enemies

Disablers/Silencers
VS uses skills in ganking and if these heroes are able to disable/silence you first, you won’t be able to be that much useful in a gank and clash. Dealing with Silencers can be as bad as dealing with Blinkers since Silence also affects allies which can make these heroes escape easier.

Mana Burners
In order to pull off an effective gank or a good swap in a clash, she needs mana. Without mana she can’t stun with Magic Missile, she can’t weaken opponents nor can she use Swap to save or kill a hero.

Magina and Akasha
Both heroes have Blinks which can easily counter your swap since they can Blink much further, unless you have already maxed out your Ulti. If you want to gank and kill them easily, you should be with allies who can perma-disable (meaning before they can Blink) them and cast some heavy spells on them. This should be easy if you have a good team.
A pub game with me as Vengeful Spirit at a Singapore Room in Garena. Follows the item build described in the guide and utilizes Terror for scouting some areas unseen by Wards. Luna Moonfang is FB'd and leaves after dying 3 times. I was left facing Pudge at bottom, and not much ganks occurred. Troll and Anti-Mage's lane got pushed easily and Magina died a lot. Magina and Troll Warlord farmed a lot too, almost never participated in ganks. Nevermore and Pudge farmed a lot of items but it did no good. Good thing Lion was a decent player who ganks with me often. Purge wasn't used that often since VS's swap + stun + Lion's stun + voodoo + Finger is enough to kill. I was warding some common areas in the Sentinel neutrals and they thought it was Maphack. Final score for VS was 6-1-19.
