TERMINATOR LEORIC, THE SKELETON KING

AUTHOR'S NOTE:
THIS GUIDE IS NOT FOR EM GAMES.

THIS GUIDE IS NOT CONCISE. YOU WILL FIND SOME WALLS OF TEXT HERE.

A KEY THING MOST GUIDE READERS DO NOT GET IS THAT SKILL AND ITEM BUILDS ARE FLUID. AND WHY DID I FORGET TO TURN OFF CAPS LOCK ?

Because the game evolved a bit and because CrimsonQueso didn't appear on PlayDotA for 15+ months, I felt I had to make a new guide with a few things to add. Of course a lot of quotes from his guide are so epic that they deserved to be here ; his guide was, and is still in my eyes the best guide on PlayDotA, but it's starting to get outdated and lacks a bit on the technical side. Like for so many other people, he taught me how to play Leoric, and it's my duty to show you how to unlock the full potential the Skeleton King has, to lead you into the untapped ressources making Leoric what he is...the King !

For those who didn't read his guide, his famous quotes are in CAPS LOCK and in white.

But I know that DotA guide readers want some "literature" guides, so here's one :

In the great land of the delicious corn,
In this fertile State this creature was born.

Her blue eyes like stars they vividly glare,
At which for eternity I could stare.

Gifted with bountiful curvy blonde hair,
With grace her golden strands wave in the air.

Whenever I see the most superb smile,
For her sake I could do the extra mile.

Listening to her very sweet warm voice,
That is more than a reason to rejoice.

Oh voluptuous Iowa beauty,
Of whom too is jealous Aphrodite.

Poetry, thou vain quest of word elegancy, inner feminity, they simply kill me, these things aren't for me !

"I have no choice. The...inner feminity...has cor...corrupted my system."

Rebooting my brain...

"I'm back."

NO, this guide won't be a literature guide, for it's painful to write and I don't want a guide attempting to whitewash its lack of correctness with beautiful words. Content is way more important than packaging, and some people forgot that principle. I'll just quote Shakespeare one last time :

A great physicist has inspired me this truth I hold to be self-evident :

Quote:
For a successful guide, accurate content must take precedence over wording, for Nature (of DotA) cannot be fooled.
Here is a prime example of what not to do :

All these things about Naga Siren in 6.71 are awfully wrong if you take a few seconds to think about it, yet they appear in a guide.

Another great example is a fallacious reason someone cited to NOT get Helm of the Dominator on Drow Ranger :

Quote:
Moon Rider: Moon Rider gets Lifesteal because she doesn't have orbs, and she cannot get other orbs. She also needs it earlier because she attacks faster and deals more damage (combined with items) than Drow Ranger during those times, because of a higher AGI gain at 2.8.
Last time I checked, Drow, thanks to her ultimate, has the BIGGEST AGI growth of any hero in DotA and this ultra powerful Trueshot Aura !

Every time you read a guide, drop that inner feminity, and be glacial, analytical, critical, logical, mechanical, mathematical, technical...normal for me. But don't forget some TESTOSTALLONE, because calculated risks are necessary to win !

I. Introduction

THIS IS A GUIDE FOR LEORIC, THAT IS THE MANLIEST HERO IN DOTA THAT DOES NOT HAVE TESTICLES.

In order to save the World Tree/Frozen Throne, IceFrog sends back to the present a reprogrammed T-850 Model 101 TERMINATOR Leoric. Because of the fierceness of battle, human tissue has disappeared, exposing Leoric's hyperalloy combat chassis.

Leoric isn't a glass cannon ; he's an armored-cannon-that-can-stop-bullets-with-his-teeth, so abuse it !

Playing him efficiently needs to ask oneself the following questions :

1) Do I know his skills and stats ?
2) What's my role in the team ?
3) Is picking him a good choice depending on my team's picks and the enemy team's pick ?
4) Can I play correctly with 1 active skill ?
5) Am I reasonably intelligent not to waste my ultimate to a creep ?
6) Am I manly enough to appreciate beef jerky as the greatest food ever invented and gank like no tomorrow and tank if need be ?

After answering those philosophical questions, let's list his pros and cons.

PROS :

- Beefy, durable because of a good Strength growth and a decent starting armor ; you're the TERMINATOR !
- The ultimate that makes you quote Arnold Schwarzenegger
- A low cooldown stun with an additional slow and good damage
- Vampiric Aura for melee heroes and a bit of pushing power
- Good DPS with Critical Strike and the Strength growth
- Among the 104 heroes of DotA, the ONLY HERO WITH 1 ACTIVE SKILL
- Decent starting damage with little variance for easy last hits/denies
- Decent 300 movespeed, as the TERMINATOR isn't hindered by a massive beard and testicles

CONS :

- Needs 280 points of mana after level 6 to be really useful (2 stuns or 1 stun and 1 reincarnation duh !)
- Low starting intelligence
- Average Agility growth, meaning a slight lack of armor mid-late game and an average attack speed, without Marksmanship to make up for it
- Can't orbwalk and doesn't have a 625 range, i.e. is melee
- No beard

II. Stats' Analysis

Here are his raw stats :

* Strength: 22 + 2.9
* Agility: 18 + 1.7
* Intelligence: 13 + 1.6

* Attack Animation: 0.56 / 0.44
* Damage: 54 - 56
* Casting Animation: 0.35 / 0.51
* Armor: 3.52
* Base Attack Time: 1.7
* Movespeed: 300
* Missile Speed: Instant
* Attack Range: 128 (melee)
* Sight Range: 1800 / 800

Strength is the TERMINATOR's main attribute, and because of those values, makes him beefy and quite hard hitting. Agility's starting value and growth gives him an average attack speed ; that problem should be adressed later. The low starting Intelligence means you should spare your mana and not harass with Hellfire Blast, especially if you wasted mana and can't Reincarnate later. Intelligence's growth is decent.

Last hitting shouldn't be a problem with a decent base damage and little variance. Note that the Attack's and Casting's Backswing animations are quite big, so cancel it if you can. To do so, just right-click to move (Preferably towards your enemy if you attack, away from him if you must survive...).

Because of his skills and stats, Leoric can fulfill three roles ; ganker, carry, tank. The first 2 roles are where he works best, while the last role is somewhat situational. So choose your items and adapt your tactics to the role you'll play.

III. Skills

Quote:
Hellfire Blast

Leoric launches a sphere of hellfire from the end of his sword, causing his victim to burst into flames. Deals damage and stuns for 2 seconds followed by a 15% slow for 2 seconds.

Level 1 - 50 impact damage, 15 dps, stun, 15% slow
Level 2 - 100 impact damage, 30 dps, stun, 15% slow
Level 3 - 150 impact damage, 40 dps, stun, 15% slow
Level 4 - 200 impact damage, 50 dps, stun, 15% slow

Casting Range : 525
Damage type: magical

Level 1: 140 mana, 8 sec cooldown.
Level 2: 140 mana, 8 sec cooldown.
Level 3: 140 mana, 8 sec cooldown.
Level 4: 140 mana, 8 sec cooldown.

Notes

• Damage type: magical
• Total damage: 80 / 160 / 230 / 300
• (*) 2 seconds stun, then 2 seconds slow and damage
Though the damage is nice, REAL MEN DO NOT HARASS. The main use is the stun and the additional slow, the damage being the icing on the cake. Note that the only thing that is improved by leveling up this skill is the damage. Another thing to know about this spell is its movespeed of only 1000. Because of that, it may be better to get closer to the enemy or let an ally with an instant disable/stun act first if the targeted enemy has a Manta Style/transformation ability/blink.

If you need to evaluate what's a range of 525, here's a visual representation :

Also don't forget to immediately make a right click (animation cancel) just after Hellfire Blast is cast, so you save some time to hit more often the enemy. Same thing for your normal attacks if the enemy is moving.

Quote:
Vampiric Aura

Nearby friendly melee units gain hit points when they hit enemy units.

Level 1 - Gains 15% of attack damage
Level 2 - Gains 20% of attack damage
Level 3 - Gains 25% of attack damage
Level 4 - Gains 30% of attack damage

Area of effect : 900
Helps keeping Leoric and his other melee friends alive. Also helps the melee creeps for pushing purposes. But don't level it early.

OMFG NO VAMPIRIC AURA? THIS GUIDE IS N00b!!!!
VAMPIRIC AURA EARLY IS LIKE A MAN USING OVERSIZED CONDOMS. NOT ONLY WILL IT PROBABLY NOT DO ITS JOB, IT WILL MAKE YOUR PERFORMANCE WORSE. IT IS DANGEROUS FOR YOU AND YOUR PARTNER AS IT WILL PUSH YOUR CREEPS/STDS CLOSER TO THE ENEMY TOWER/VAGINA.

The other reasons for not leveling it too early is that you need some Stats early game to make up for your deficient starting Intelligence and to get Critical Strike to start dealing damage ; a naked level 6 Leoric has only a manapool of 273 points without bonus Stats. And of course, Lifesteal gets useful when you start dealing damage...

Also note how this skill scales ; a single level is quite good, and additional levels bring small improvements.

Quote:
Critical Strike

Gives a chance to do more damage on an attack.

Level 1 - 15% chance, 1.25 times normal damage
Level 2 - 15% chance, 1.75 times normal damage
Level 3 - 15% chance, 2.25 times normal damage
Level 4 - 15% chance, 2.75 times normal damage

Passive
Your Trueshotstab Aura passive for yourself. The TERMINATOR's targeting system has been updated for a higher probability to hit critical areas of his victims, terminating them faster. Note that a single level of Critical Strike multiplies your DPS by 0.15*1.25 + 0.85 = 1.0375x, so you should get Critical Strike level 2 ASAP !

Quote:
Reincarnation

When killed the Skeleton King will come back to life and slow enemies in a 700 aoe by 30% for 3 seconds.

Level 1 - 3 seconds delay, slows enemies' movement speed around him by 30%
Level 2 - 3 seconds delay, slows enemies' movement speed around him by 30%
Level 3 - 3 seconds delay, slows enemies' movement speed around him by 30%

Level 1: 140 mana, 300 sec cooldown.
Level 2: 140 mana, 220 sec cooldown.
Level 3: 140 mana, 140 sec cooldown.

Area of effect : 700

Notes

• Will revive even if silenced on death.
• Will not revive if Skeleton King does not have required mana.
• Will not revive if he dies on unpathable terrain.
• If Skeleton King has an Aegis and Reincarnation is cooled down upon death, Reincarnation will trigger first.
• Revives with full HP and full mana.
THE TERMINATOR HAS NOW LEARNED HIS FAMOUS ONE-LINER ! Mana cost is now constant, so there is no reason not to level it at level 11. Allows you to show your manliness to your teammates pussies if the need arises (tanking a tower, tanking the enemy damage if they're stupid enough to let your carries/stunners free to operate, etc.). 6.72 made this skill even better ; your return in the thick of the action will be quicker, and the enemy will get slower !

IV. Skill Build

Skill builds are fluid and should be adapted according to what you're facing, who are your mates and whether you're jungling or not.

Standard laning build :

1. Hellfire Blast
2. Stats
3. Hellfire Blast/Stats
4. Stats/Hellfire Blast
5. Hellfire Blast
6. Reincarnation
7. Hellfire Blast
8. Critical Strike
9. Critical Strike
10. Vampiric Aura/Critical Strike
11. Reincarnation
12. Critical Strike
13. Critical Strike/Vampiric Aura
14. Vampiric Aura
15. Vampiric Aura
16. Reincarnation
17-25. WHATEVER THE FUCK IS LEFT

You max your Hellfire Blast because it improves its damage. Stats are taken at level 2 and 4 because your manapool is otherwise pitiful, and as a side effect, makes you beefier and gives a little more DPS. Get Stats at level 3 if the harassment is heavy. If you've got mates that deal enough burst damage to reliably kill your laning enemies in one combo, just level up 1-2 levels of Hellfire Blast and get Stats or Critical Strike for a beefier/harder hitting Leoric. Note that you can take 1 level of Vampiric Aura at level 10 ; that's because Vampiric Aura saw multiple buffs since 6.64, making it viable to get it a bit earlier for helping regenerating HP. I don't suggest getting it earlier however because you don't deal a lot of damage and you don't want to push too early. An example of utter stupidity would be to take Critical Strike level 1 at level 8 and then skilling up Vampiric Aura level 1 at level 9, as Critical Strike level 1 multiplies your DPS by 1.0375x, a way too small number to be actually noticeable. Consequently, Critical Strike level 2 should always come just after Critical Strike level 1, and no other skill should be leveled between them.

Although not advised (because farming heroes is better than farming neutral creeps), it is possible to jungle with the TERMINATOR.

Jungling build :

1. Vampiric Aura
2. Critical Strike
3. Critical Strike
4. Hellfire Blast/Stats
5. Critical Strike
6. Reincarnation
7. Critical Strike
8-10. WHATEVER YOU THINK IS APPROPRIATE
11. Reincarnation
12-15. WHATEVER YOU THINK IS APPROPRIATE
16. Reincarnation
17-25. WHATEVER THE FUCK IS LEFT

As you can see, this skill build is quite flexible, because after spending the early levels jungling, you have to adapt to the situation. "Basic psychoDotAlogy is among my sub-routines."

V. Starting Items

SOME COMBINATION OF THESE ITEMS

My personal favorite starting items are the following :

Because you have responsible support heroes in your team, use the courier to get the following items after a few minutes of game :

Because you arrived naked from the future, you need some boots ; the STR Power Treads are the boots of choice. It gives you beefiness and DPS and decent mobility. As a side note, abuse from stats manipulation with Power Treads ; if you need to regenerate some HP/mana, put it in Agility to get more from your Tangoes/Salves/Magic Wand/Urn of Shadows. Need mana ? Put Power Treads in Intelligence. Phase Boots isn't a recommended choice ; stats manipulation is very strong, especially on the TERMINATOR, and the Phase ability disables Critical Strike, bashes and True Strike. If you play at DotA, you know why there's a Magic Wand. TP scroll is mandatory for surviving/ganking/farming in a free lane.

WTF AN URN OF SHADOWS ON LEORIC ? YES. Though you can play Leoric without mana regen, I prefer to get some mana to spare, and because you're a Strength hero that is gonna gank like vigoss, a rewards card is welcomed ; after 5 ganks, the next is FREE !

BUT YOU'RE STEALING CHARGES FROM THAT WITCH DOCTOR/SVEN/OTHER URN CARRIER ! YOU WORK IN A TEAM, SO USE YOUR CHARGES ON YOUR MATES/ENEMIES WHEN IT'S NEEDED !

Note that the following items are worthy Urn replacements too :

The Ring of Basilius BREWSTER and the Medallion of Courage CONNOR work quite well on the TERMINATOR.

VI. ARMLET TIER

ASK YOURSELF THIS FIRST:
AM I PLAYING LEORIC?

YES: GET AN ARMLET
NO: GET AN ARMLET

Therefore, this is the Core ARMLET TIER Build you should have :

Lacked armor ? Got Armlet.

Lacked DPS ? Got Armlet.

Lacked burst HP ? Got Armlet.

Lacked magic immunity ? Got BKB.

Once you've got your ARMLET TIER items, you are now a real TERMINATOR. If you didn't already gank frequently, start doing it NOW ! Unless you're a total noob YOU DON'T DESERVE TO PLAY THE TERMINATOR, when you've got these items and your mates ask for a gank, say : NO PROBLEMO !

BUT THE NOOB ENEMIES ASK ME TO STOP GANKING/PWNING THEM ! WITH THAT ARMLET ON YOUR RIGHT HAND, RAISE YOUR RIGHT HAND AND TELL THEM TO "TALK TO THE HAND".

VII. Situational Items

Your team needs an additional soft disable ? You can stack Cranium Basher with any of the other items if you want.

Want a cheap item for an additional slow ? Stacks with Mjollnir and Satanic.

Try to complete at least Magic Wand first and get a Quelling Blade, and if you can afford it before 10 minutes, enjoy your subsequent 2+ level advantage on your opponents by instagibbing the biggest neutrals. Then keep that item as long as you can, because it's a reliable gold/exp boosting item.

DO I WANT A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF LIFESTEAL? GET A SATANIC. Might be useful if your team wants you to tank for 10 minutes in a team clash...

But to be an even better TERMINATOR, here's a pro-tip :

When you get Helm of the Dominator, go in the jungle, looking for a Dark Troll Warlord to dominate. It's an excellent creep for Leoric, not for his Ensnare spell, but for his Raise Dead ability, so you can truly be the...SKELETON KING !

If you always fail to keep that 140 mana to Reincarnate ; by doing so, "You fail to amuse me".

If there are some very annoying spells getting through your BKB, you may consider this item, though it should be noted Leoric can generally cope quite well with disables/damage with his tankiness and his second life. Read nix's guide for more details.

DO I HAVE POCKETS FULL OF GOLD/ENEMY IMAGES? GET A RADIANCE. Mjollnir and/or Battlefury are better otherwise, especially if one of the enemies can use Mjollnir effectively, and ergo Static Charge...

To be effective, Radiance also needs to be more or less rushed ; get it before 25 minutes, meaning you'll probably have to delay 1-2 big items in the Core ARMLET TIER build.

IS MY TEAM ALL MELEE BECAUSE COLLECTIVELY WE HAVE A LEARNING DISABILITY? GET A VLAD'S. Because you're beefy, you're also quite a good carrier for that item.

Are my opponents a bunch of AoE-dropping assholes? Get it if your team needs you to tank rather than to stab.

Is there an annoying spellcaster/blinker that I want to Silence ?

Did my team audition for the Special Olympics by not having any disables?

Want to be a -_-PlaymatE ? Can work great if you've got a lot of skill, but be warned ; getting this item will reduce your waist-to-hip ratio to 0.66, you'll have not only a silicon brain but also a lot of silicone upon your chest, and you'll appear in the centerfold pages...

Want to get rid of that invisible hero/wards ? Grab that IR-vision device and be the PREDATOR !

I've seen this item on Leoric sometimes. Honestly, I don't advise getting it, but it can work. And with Gem of True Sight, you become the PREDATOR !

VIII. ITEMS AFTER ARMLET TIER

Want the BEST single-target DPS-boosting item for Leoric ? Note that you should get Stygian and/or Assault Cuirass instead of Mjollnir if your team deals massive physical damage. Mjollnir is also good for disabling any Linken's Sphere and dealing some AOE damage. Because the TERMINATOR is extremely manly and fights hand to hand, when a Chain Lightning and a Critical Strike proc at the same time, he gets the effects of BOTH. Don't forget that Static Charge to protect yourself, your main carry or your initiator, especially if it has a BEARD. This item is a must if the enemy team relies on DoTs and/or a carry with Radiance (Static Charge now triggers on DAMAGE...) !

Want an armor reducing strat that turns the armor's metal to liquid metal ? Note that it's not mandatory to get both ; you can let someone else carry one of the items. If you have to get one of the items, I recommend getting Assault Cuirass first, unless your farming skills aren't that great ; the point is that Assault Cuirass grants you the same DPS as Stygian and is more team-beneficial because of all the auras. It's especially a must if you have Gorgon in your team that shoots at 4 heroes at the same time...

Want MOAR AOE damage ? Works best with another IAS boosting item, the best being Mjollnir.

Want the BEST OF THE BEST survivability against physical damage item ? You don't trust me ? READ THIS :

If you compare what Assault Cuirass and what Butterfly gives you for the survivability side, you have to compare the effect of +15 armor versus +30% Evasion.

The damage coefficient in the positive armor value region is :

C(A) = 1/(1 + 0.06*A), where C(A) is the damage coefficient, A the armor.

One wants to know at which value of armor the +30% Evasion effect is equal to +15 of armor, so one gets the following equation :

C(A+15) = 0.7*C(A)

With a few manipulations, it's easy to find the armor value :

1/(1+0.06*(A+15)) = 0.7/(1+0.06*A)

=> 1+0.06*A = 1.33 + 0.042*A
=> 0.018*A = 0.33
=> A = 18.33

It seems to be quite a big value for Leoric. Indeed, a naked level 25 Leoric has only 12 of armor.

But the problem above favors Assault Cuirass by neglecting one important fact ; to be more accurate, one has to take into account that Butterfly also adds armor through the +30 Agility, so one has to start with the following equation :

1/(1+0.06*(A+15)) = 0.7/(1+0.06*(A+0.14*30))
=> A = 4.33

This calculation shows that when the TERMINATOR reaches 4.33 of armor, getting an Assault Cuirass grants as much survivability as getting Butterfly. Beyond that value, Butterfly is simply better, and you go beyond that value because you do get Armlet. The only case I can think of where getting Assault Cuirass is BETTER than getting Butterfly for the survivability is when there's massive armor reduction coupled with a carry with Monkey King Bar with True Strike activated, such as when an enemy Slithereen has cast Amplify Damage on you and then Phantom Assassin attacks you with a Monkey King Bar in her inventory.

For the DPS side, Butterfly can be superior to Assault Cuirass depending on how much damage you deal and the enemy's armor. Check Malle's wonderful armor reduction/damage amplification, found in EcceLex's Slardar guide if you want to calculate a bit. Of course, if someone else on your team is already wearing an Assault Cuirass, Butterfly IS superior to Assault Cuirass for the DPS.

Note that if no one gets Assault Cuirass, it's better that you get it for the sake of the team.

Another note about Butterfly ; the Talisman of Evasion only costs 1800 gold and already grants you an impressive +25% Evasion. It is not necessary to complete Butterfly immediately, as it "only" grants you an additional +30 damage, +30 Agility, +30 Attack Speed and +5% Evasion. The 4200 gold you've saved can be reinvested somewhere else (Battlefury costs only 4350 gold, Stygian 4400 gold, Maelstrom 2700 gold, etc.).

Want an even better targeting system to take care of an enemy wielding a Butterfly/having a skill that grants Evasion ? Note that the Bash doesn't have problems stacking with your Critical or Chain Lightning.

AM I A BALLER?
DO YOU HAVE REFRESHER ORB?

Why is it a good item on the TERMINATOR ? Because it allows you to come back not only for Judgement Day but also for Rise of the Machines.

There are only 2 downsides for that item ; the first is that it requires a huge manapool ; Hellfire Blast + Refresher + Reincarnate costs 655 mana, or the equivalent of 51 points of Intelligence, something Leoric gets at level 20 or a bit earlier with the appropriate items/more Stats in the skill build. The other problem is if you are the lone survivor in a teamfight, and the enemy team still has 2-3 heroes, reincarnating another time won't necessarily bring you victory.

In my opinion, it's better to kill fast ; the TERMINATOR doesn't want to star in a 4-hour movie !

I GOT A DIVINE RAPIER AFTER MY REFRESHER ORB
YOU ARE NOW BALLING OUT OF CONTROL

If your teammates know what they do, you don't need Refresher Orb to carry Divine Rapier. Divine Rapier (or TERMINATOR's legendary shotgun as it should be called here) works best with IAS-boosting items and/or Battlefury. HERE'S AN EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU SHOULD BE BALLING OF CONTROL :

Need more muscle for the title of Mr. Olympia or for Pumping Iron ?

The TERMINATOR has acquired his Harley Davidson to gank across all the map and/or make that crucial teleportation to defend his base/erase the enemy base.

BUT I NEED ADDITIONAL ADVICE FOR DPS ! GO PLAY AT WORLD OF MATHCRAFT ! READ THE FOLLOWING BOX, BECAUSE EVERY TERMINATOR IS AN OPTIMIZATOR !

Before you even consider optimizing your DPS, ask yourself the following questions :

1) Do I die too fast ?
2) Do I need a particular disable ?
3) Does my team require me to get a specific item ?

If you answered no to all the questions, then you can start optimizing your DPS. Note that the DPS's optimization assumes the enemy is still and has a lot of EHP so that a single hit doesn't remove a significant part (Let's say 20%.) of its HP. If the assumptions aren't fullfilled, it may be better to favor DMG over IAS, although there's still the risk you'll waste a lot of your DPS on the last hit...

The first thing to know is the damage coefficient, C(A), in function of the armor A. That function is the following :

C(A) = 2 - (0.94)^(-A) for A < 0
C(A) = 1/(1 + 0.06*A) for A >=0

This gives you the following C(A) chart and C(A) graph :

Note that contrarily to EcceLex's Slardar guide, the C(A) graph doesn't go in the extremely negative values ; that's because negative armor has a cap of -20.

Then, one has to calculate the TERMINATOR's DPS. Leoric's DPS is given by the following function :

DPS = (1.2625/1.7)*(DMG)*(1+(IAS/100)), where DMG is the damage on each attack (take a base damage of 55 instead of 54-56), and IAS is the improved attack speed given by raw IAS and Agility. The 1.2625 multiplier comes from the effect of Critical Strike level 4. The 1.7 divisor is the base attack time.

For a realistic case, let's say Leoric is level 16, followed the laning skill build and has his ARMLET TIER items, with Armlet activated. He then has DMG = 218 and IAS = 100. Adding items/leveling up will then modify the DMG and IAS values in an easily computed way.

For those who can read some MATLAB (I use MATLAB 7.5.0.), here is how I compute those values (x = additional DMG, y = additional IAS, z = DPS, the 33+185 term is the 218 damage at level 16, and the +2/1.7 represents the attack speed with IAS = 100 mentioned earlier). Of course, you can try to adapt that code to other math programs such as Mathematica :

Code:
[x,y]=meshgrid(0:1:300,0:1:300);
z = (1.2625*(x+33+185).*((y/100)+2)/1.7);
surf(x,y,z)
shading interp
hold on
rangeZ = 400:100:1900
contour3(x,y,z,rangeZ,'k')
This gives you the following 3D graph, with "hotter" colors meaning higher DPS, and "iso-DPS" black curves indicating the different multiples of 100 DPS :

For an easier reading, here is a top view of the graph :

In that graph, the point (0,0) is the DPS Leoric has if he's level 16 with the ARMLET TIER items ; note that the TERMINATOR deals 323 DPS at that point. Adding a new artifact that gives x DMG and y IAS will make you move to the point (x,y).

If you add for example a Mjollnir to your inventory at level 16, then you have to move to the point of the graph (DMG = 24, IAS = 80), which gives you DPS = 503. Note that the Chain Lightning effect is left for later. If you get a Stygian instead of Mjollnir, then DMG = 60 and IAS = 0, giving you DPS = 412. As a side note, getting Assault Cuirass gives the same DPS as Stygian, as you get DPS = 412 too, but gives you some better things ; the Negative Armor Aura for the enemies, the Positive Armor Aura and the Attack Speed Aura for your teammates.

But the DPS isn't what really counts ; what really counts is how fast the enemy's HP drops to zero, and that is -dHP/dt, or let's call it EDPS (Effective DPS).

EDPS is then defined as :

EDPS = C(A)*DPS + MDPS,

where MDPS is the effective magical DPS. In the case of Mjollnir for example, one has to add on average 40 magical damage per attack because of Chain Lightning, which, in case of normal magic resistance, means 30 HP lost per attack. The rate at which HP is lost through Chain Lightning is the average damage multiplied by the attack speed, which gives :

MDPS = (1+(IAS/100))*30/1.7

In the example above, one gets MDPS = (1+(100+80)/100)*30/1.7 = 49.

If one wants to compare the EDPS value of Mjollnir with the EDPS value of Stygian, one has to know the armor value. Of course, this varies with each game, so I'll just give here an example when one attacks an enemy hero with 10 of armor.

So here are the values (C(4) for Stygian is because of the -6 armor reduction of course.) :

EDPS_Mjollnir = C(10)*DPS + MDPS = 0.625*503 + 49 = 363 HP/s
EDPS_Stygian = C(4)*DPS + MDPS = 0.806*412 + 0 = 332 HP/s

As you can see, getting Mjollnir is better than Stygian IF you're fighting alone against a SINGLE target with A = 10. When it's a team clash, and if your team is coordinated, some of your mates will focus the same hero as you. Let's say that your team's contribution to the hero you're focusing is 500 DPS (A realistic value considering that Drow Ranger can easily exceed that value at level 16).

So one gets :

EDPS_Mjollnir = C(10)*(DPS + 500) + MDPS = 675 HP/s
EDPS_Stygian = C(4)*(DPS + 500) + MDPS = 735 HP/s

Then one has to discuss if the MDPS value for Mjollnir has to be multiplied by 4 if it always hits 4 heroes, in which case EDPS_Mjollnir = 822 HP/s, with 147 HP/s spread on 3 other heroes.

So try to play a little with the DPS graph and the C(A) chart and consider how much physical damage deal your mates to consider which items to get.

In case of massive armor in the enemy team (Assault Cuirass + Mekansm + Shadow Priest's Weave for example), as a rule of thumb you can consider the following options :

- Massive armor reduction, a really massive one. For example, with Medaillon of Courage, Stygian and Assault Cuirass, and if you attack someone with an armor of 40 (An extreme case in DotA, as most of the time, the biggest values you'll see are at about 30.), the damage amplification is C(23)/C(40) = 1.429, or a +42.9% damage amplification. Note that the damage coefficient is C(23) = 0.420, which is quite low.

- Cleave ; because cleaved damage is only reduced by armor type and attack type and not by armor value (which in the case of Armor Hero and Attack Type Hero means no reduction...), you'll effectively bypass armor for the damage you'll deal through cleave, meaning you can use the EDPS formula with C(A) = C(0) = 1.

- Mjollnir, because the Chain Lightning/Static Charge doesn't care about armor.

For those who have basic mathematical analysis skills AND are decent at mental calculation, here's an additional note :

As stated earlier, the TERMINATOR's DPS is easily represented by this equation :

DPS = (1.2625/1.7)*(DMG)*(1+(IAS/100))

But you know what, it's rather easy to compute the INCREASE in DPS given by an additional item, or at least its approximation, by using Taylor's theorem.

If you drop the (1.2625/1.7) multiplier in the DPS expression, you can get the following equations :

The first line is simply the DPS's gradient, and the second line is the first order approximation of the DPS increase, for an item granting x DMG and y IAS. Note that if the item you're considering only grants you DMG or IAS, the expression isn't an approximation, but is exact (Proof left to the student reader's discretion !).

If you hesitate IN-GAME between 2 items, and you simply want to optimize your DPS, you can try to quickly compute the DPS increase to see which item is better. These expressions also explain why once you have STR PT, Armlet of Mordiggian and BKB, it's not that good to get Stygian Desolator+MKB+Battlefury for example.

Another application of this computation is that it's sometimes useful to have an AGI PT on Leoric !

You may wonder what's best between setting PT on STR, giving a +8 DMG advantage, or setting it on AGI for a +8 IAS edge. Just imagine you've set your PT on INT, so you have the following numbers :

DMG = 502
IAS = 67Agility + 25Armlet activated + 25PT's IAS + 80Mjollnir = 197

Applying the method I described earlier, the DPS increase by setting PT on STR is given by (1+(IAS/100))*8 + (DMG/100)*0 = 2.97*8 = 23.76

With PT set on AGI, you get : (1+(IAS/100))*0 + (DMG/100)*8 = 5.02*8 = 40.16

Note that I didn't even take into account Mjollnir's Chain Lightning, which obviously benefits more from an AGI PT...

As you can see, in this case, it's better to put your PT on AGI, if you only consider the DPS criterium against a non-moving target. If you need survivability, STR PT is generally better, and if you have problems with positionning or the enemy moves quite fast, Phase Boots are better.

Another thing to consider is that, sometimes, the enemy hero has such a combination of HP/damage block/armor that just diminishing your damage by 8 may require an additional hit to kill him/her, so STR PT would be better in that case.
This DPS increase computation also explains why Nv.Cherry.Dgp got 2 Gloves of Haste while jungling ; it's because it's the best option in the 500 gold range for increasing Leoric's DPS.

IX. Rejected Items

EVERYTHING ELSE !

X. Best Allies/Worst Enemies

Best Allies

Here is a complete list of heroes that get better when Leoric is on their team :

All of them.

More precisely, you want these kinds of heroes :

Chain Stunners/Disablers

Note that Demon Witch and Shadow Shaman have 2 disables by themselves, and Tinker is here because of the Rearm-Guinsoo trick ; his burst damage is also very good.

With the first 3 heroes, use "The Power of Friendship". It's super effective !! :

Initiators

Self-explanatory.

DPS amplifiers

Your DPS gets, well, AMPLIFIED.

Carries

Which carry doesn't appreciate your Hellfire Blast ?

Worst Enemies

Although you are the manliest hero in DotA without testicles, you have to fear some enemies :

Mana Nazis (THEY ARE FAGS)

Do I even need to explain why ?

Chain Stunners/Disablers

About any hero has problems if these guys come to gank you before you gank them.

Lane Dominators

Lane Dominators will give you a hard time last hitting creeps.

Evasion

Though you can still Hellfire Blast them, Evasion fucks up your DPS capability.

Mr. Freeze

In this universe, there's only one absolute ... everything freezes ! Yes, against his ultimate, your HP is frozen and can only drop to the absolute zero. TERMINATE him with extreme prejudice before he can have a (Ice) Blast freezing you. If needed, use Orchid on him ; you don't want to hear in tonight's forecast...a freeze is coming !

Percentage-based damage

They don't care that you're beefy.

XI. Game Walkthrough

Early game, choose whether you want to lane or jungle.

If you choose to lane, go on a sidelane with a mate ; if and only if you are RageCore, you can solo mid with Leoric ! Your mate must be either ranged or have a disable. If you want to be really wicked, use the "Power of Trilane" to chainstun and try to grab that First Blood. Otherwise, try to grab some last hits on the creeps so you can farm a bit (but don't overexpose yourself to enemy harassing...), and as soon as an occasion presents itself, stun and attack that low-HP enemy if you think you can kill him.

If you go jungling, use that guide to jungle properly, and if your mates need you, go help them.

When you hit the mid-game, you've got to gank whenever it's possible, especially when you get that Armlet. Don't roam 100% of the time however, as a little farm will help you, and indirectly, your mates greatly.

Thanks to an analysis of the T-850's microchips, his killing function is as follows :

Code:
% terminator.m
%
% author : skynet/icefrog
% Note : Program can crash if terminator_alive==false

while (enemy_alive_presence==true)

        lock(appropriate_enemy);
        activate(armlet);

          if(BKB_on_cooldown==false)

          activate(BKB);

          else

          complain(balance_forums, 'BKB cooldown too great');

          end

       hellfire_blast(appropriate_enemy);
       start(time_counter);

          while (time_counter < 8s)

            right_click(appropriate_enemy);

              if((appropriate_enemy_HP < 150) && (urn_on_cooldown == false))

              urn_of_shadows(appropriate_enemy);

              end

          end

        reset(time_counter);

      break ;

end

if (enemy_alive_presence==false)

deactivate(armlet);
shout(All_channel, 'YOU ARE TERMINATED !');
BUT I'M TOO NOOB TO ACTIVATE/DEACTIVATE IT

YOU ARE A DEFECTIVE T-850 THAT WILL BE TERMINATED !

As you can see, the killing procedure isn't particularly difficult. You might however use the function terminator_reincarnate if (HP==0 && reincarnate_on_cooldown==false). That killing procedure is the same whether you gank a lone enemy or start a big teamclash. In case of a team clash, just go behind your initiator.

Note that you can use Urn of Shadows before the enemy's HP is below 150 if you're pretty confident you can kill him with the Soul Release.

For your viewing pleasure, here's an example of the killing function :

At the top Sentinel lane, the TERMINATOR and his ally Venomancer (hidden in the side shop) see a red target with a BEARD, who didn't follow THE GUIDE and was therefore a disgrace deserving to have his beard shaved by Leoric, and to be of course TERMINATED. To shave Axe, it's not the size (of the sword) that matters, but how you use it !

The target (Axe) got locked and therefore received a Hellfire Blast. Note the pathetic Pedobear attempting to gank us and save the bearded dishonor.

As the Leoric player forgot to type the cheat -zsmj at the start of the game, he still doesn't have an Armlet nor a BKB to activate !

Thanks to a few of our hits and Poison Nova, the beard is nearly shaven, but the King's life is in danger !

Because the Axe player can't count, he uses Culling Beard a bit late, wasting a lot of its potential and allowing us to hit him a bit more than he should have. Ergo, the TERMINATOR is forced to use his famous one-liner, while the pathetic red pussy that tarnished the beard got what it deserved ; getting killed by our creeps !

Pedobear tried to do ugly things to Venomancer, but his complete lack of culture betrayed him ; everyone knows the movie "Lord of DotA : The Return of the King". Therefore, lock and Hellfire Blast the appropriate enemy !

A few more hits, and the Pedobear is TERMINATED.

The most important part of the killing function ; shouting on the "All" channel : YOU ARE TERMINATED !

But to be an even better TERMINATOR, here's a pro-tip :

With a strong and comical Austrian accent, or mit einem starken und komischen österreichischen Akzent should I say for our Germanic readers, shout in Ventrilo/Teamspeak/whatever VoIP you're using the cult line, in German (They speak German in Austria, you know ?) : DU BIST TERMINIERT !

For all the guys drooling while watching screenshots of DotA 2, here's the killing function in DotA 2 :

Shadow Fiend got stunned at the mere sight of TERMINATOR Leoric ! Note there's no BKB in the King's inventory as the enemies were too n00b for it, and some spells could get through it. Take note of the Urn of Shadows' Soul Release being already used on Shadow Fiend.

Like me, protest and ask IceFrog to change Armlet's color, because pink ain't a decent color for Leoric. For the same reason, he should also change the color for the first player in Dire whenever he picks Leoric.

In stabbing we trust ! And like Prometheus brought fire to men, Leoric brings electricity to the Radiant with his Static Charge !

Even without balls, the TERMINATOR is manly enough to fight 3 heroes near their fountain !

The Radiant's fountain ain't a safe place for the Radiant !

Doom thought it was smart to get near the TERMINATOR without being TERMINATED. What a fool, he doesn't know he's already dead !

The art of farming ; some creeps bring more gold !

Sadly, all good things come to an end, as their Ancient got TERMINATED.

No enemy should be left alive, for you are the GOVERNATOR of the Great State of California DotA, reigning on all the map and because all your enemies are GIRLIE MEN !

Late game, try to serve as a 2nd carry for your team ; if the enemy team focuses your carry, use the killing function and stab them hard. Otherwise, apply that same killing function and hope your carry does its job before terminator_alive==false.

XII. Replays

Here are a couple of replays showing competitive players TERMINATING their enemies :

[Match] ADC '10 JnP vs Nirvana.CN
Dota Pride: Fear vs Pajkatt

Note that Nv.Cherry.Dgp strangely bought 2 Gloves of Haste early game ; if you make a quick computation, it was the best option for boosting Leoric's DPS for a low price, as he spent the early levels jungling. He also made some epic Armlet juking.

But here's another replay showing all the flexibility the TERMINATOR can deliver : http://www.playdota.com/forums/509164/terminator/

In this replay, you'll find me (I'll let you guess who I was...) and 3 of my mates playing a casual game against some n00bs in a regional LAN-party in our area. The picks seemed, in my opinion, to be more in favor of the Scourge, although our team had the advantage in teamfights thanks to the AOE fest we could dish out, especially late game. Before you criticize the Leoric player for some failed last hits/misclicks/lack of coordination, you have to know that he had an insomnia before the LAN-party, and as it was in the middle of it, at the time he played, he didn't sleep for 60-72 hours, but managed to hold his own and TERMINATE the enemy, because he is a MACHINE !

The Zeus in Sentinel isn't a member of our team, which explains his utter lack of map awareness, retarded item build (RoB at start, no bottle while being mid and where's that Guinsoo our team needed so badly ??) and super triple KS at the end of the game.

The replay shouldn't be watched if you're looking for a close game ; we knew we were facing n00bs, yet they managed to beat us, twice, in previous games with utterly stupid pushing strats, so we were desperate and used the "Power of TriQuadlane" ! You should rather watch the replay for how to adapt with Leoric in every situation (Watch the picks, and you'll understand why there wasn't a BKB on Leoric...), stats manipulation, animation canceling, Urn of Shadows' use, and late-game, exploiting the famous one-liner to its fullest by being such a nuisance that the enemies focus Leoric and let his team free to do whatever they want, as the TERMINATOR is no "Last action hero", being able to come back.

Indeed, even without testicles, the TERMINATOR is full of TESTOSTALLONE and should take the calculated and necessary risks to win the game ! Though you're free of tatoos and you don't play with knives (You play with a GIANT sword though !), your lives, for a good reason, are sometimes called...THE EXPENDABLES !

Throughout the game, so many towers/buildings fell to the TERMINATOR that he should be nicknamed DEMOLITION MAN, and because of serving so well his team, was so popular that a 61st Amendment was voted !
