MaetriArch's Guide to Anub'arak


Introduction


Nerubian Assassin (as it's name suggested) has long been dubbed as one of the most fearsome ganker in DotA. This reputation come not only because he is a freakingly disgusting cockroach, but also due to his Vendetta Impale Mana Burn combo. In the right hands, NA is gamebreaking. In the wrong hands, NA is still annoyingly strong.

Pre 6.6x (to be verified), he was a constant ban/first pick in the competitive world, a 10s cooldown Mana Burn is a freaking pain in the ass. But not too long ago, his lane control was nerfed by changing Mana Burn's damage and cooldown into another version that would scale late-game, and competitive players started to forget NA.

Come 6.67, IceFrog buffed NA, giving him Nerubian Weaver's Scarab that strengthen his map control and giving him an omg-silence. This guide will focus on how NA (in my opinion) should be played - by abusing the damn Scarabs.


DISCLAIMER:Firstly, I am not a league player, and this way of playing has proven effective only in pubs (because of course, you can't pick NA in a clan war..). The Nerubian Assassin has a fairly balanced stats growth for an agility hero (average agi growth and high-than-average int growth); that and seeing that Anub'arak has no carrying skills with him, made the Nerubian Assassin unsuitable for dps-carrying. Even thought it is quite obvious for some, I'm sure you guys have seen BF Butterfly NA before and tbh it pissed me off. Another important aspect that we needed to see is the long duration of Casting Animation Backswing, make sure to cancel it every time you use Impale, Mana Burn, or Urna Swarm.

Another point to be considered is Nerubian Assassin's low starting HP, and melee range making him quite fragile early - mid game. His starting damage is not something to be proud of either, hampering his ability to take the solo lane. His only saving grace in mid-lane is his ability to rune-whore with Urna Swarm. Still, all points considered, soloing using NA is not recommended (it can hardly be done without any roaming support/s to keep the opponent down).
